Justin Townes Earle is releasing 'Maybe Baby', a cover of the classic song by Buddy Holly as part of a compilation album released for what would have been Buddy's 75th birthday celebrations later this year. The album, called 'Rave On, Buddy Holly', features covers of well known songs by the influential musician, performed by singers such as Karen Elson, Paul McCartney, Cee-Lo Green, Florence And The Machine, She & Him and many others. The album is set for release on June 28th through through Fantasy Records/Concord Music Group.
Justin Townes Earle himself is the son of American country singer-songwriter Steve Earle, who also appeared as a regular in HBO series The Wire. Justin was born in Nashville, Tennessee and began to use drugs when he was a teenager. He eventually recovered from his addiction to focus on his music career. Since then he has performed at many music festivals, including South by Southwest in Austin, Texas from 2008-2010. In 2009 he won an Americana Music Award for Emerging Artist of the Year.
Buddy Holly died at the age of 22 in 1959, in a plane crash but in his year and a half long career managed to inspire notable bands and artists such as The Beatles, The Rolling Stones and Bob Dylan.
