The Stronger hitmaker caused controversy when he was named as the headliner for the ceremony, which celebrated the end of the 2015 sporting event, and an online petition calling for him to be replaced reached more than 50,000 signatures.

Despite the campaign, West came onstage in Toronto to perform a medley of his greatest hits including Black Skinhead, Touch the Sky and All of the Lights, but about 13 minutes into the set, he abruptly threw his microphone high into air after getting frustrated with a technical glitch.

He walked off stage without glancing back at the audience as the microphone came crashing down.

A representative for broadcaster CBC Olympics wrote on Twitter.com, "UPDATE: @kanyewest's mic cut out in-stadium due to technical issue - audio remained on in broadcast."

It is reported West only had one more song to perform before walking offstage.
