The dozen life-like wax sculptures used by Kanye West in his recent controversial music video for ‘Famous’ have gone on display at an art gallery in Los Angeles – with its creators hoping that the whole collection will sell for $4 million at auction.

The New York Times reported the private exhibition held at the gallery last weekend on Thursday (September 1st) and said that the entire collection of 12 naked sculptures would be going under the hammer, with the $4 million figure floated by those invited to see the exhibition – with the gallery’s owner, Tim Blum, calling the sum “a good ballpark”.

The video for ‘Famous’ made its debut at The Forum in Inglewood, Los Angeles back in late June, and caused much division in its reaction, with many accusing it of insensitivity. But, Taylor Swift aside, it received curiously little reaction from any of the celebrities involved.

Ten hyper-realistic sculptures all lay in bed alongside waxwork representations of Kanye and his wife Kim Kardashian – the celebrities in question were Caitlyn Jenner, George W. Bush, Donald Trump, Taylor Swift, Anna Wintour, Amber Rose, Rihanna, Chris Brown, Bill Cosby and Ray J.

Kim Kardashian, 35, was at the event itself, and spoke to W Magazine and said that she herself had a hand in the creation of her own waxwork. “I shaved my own butt… It was a little too small, and then it was a little too big. I was there with the tools to get it right.”

Aaron Axelrod, a Los Angeles-based artist, told the New York Times the sculpture does have artistic merit despite its origins. “I did the math in my head, and it took $500,000 to $1 million just to make… This caught me off guard. It's one of the coolest pieces I've ever seen, which is kind of annoying because it's Kanye West.”
