Kate Bush has drawn criticism from music fans for voicing her support for the new prime minister Theresa May, having described the Conservative Party leader as “wonderful” in a new interview.

Speaking to Canadian magazine Maclean’s this week, the reclusive singer said that having a female prime minister is the “best thing that’s happened” to Britain “in a long time”.

“I actually really like her,” the 58 year old English singer-songwriter. “I will say it is great to have a woman in charge of the country. She's very sensible and I think that's a good thing at this point in time.”

Theresa May ascended virtually unchallenged to the premiership of the Conservatives, and therefore the post of prime minister, after David Cameron resigned in the wake of the EU referendum back in May this year.

Bush had replied in the context of a question from the interviewer about her song ‘Waking The Witch’, a track from her 1985 album Hounds of Love, which she once said was about the “fear of women’s power”. The question was also asked with reference to Hillary Clinton’s recent loss to Donald Trump in the American presidential election.

While she did not address the topic of ‘Brexit’ at all, she added that May “a very intelligent woman but I don't see much to fear”.

It comes in the same week that Bush released a live album, entitled Before The Dawn, which captures her lengthy residency at London’s Hammersmith Apollo back in 2014.

The Official Charts Company in Britain hinted earlier this week that the record was on course to become Bush’s first chart-topper in nearly three decades. Her last Number One album was her 1987 compilation The Whole Story.
