Deepwater Horizon Review

Good

This reunion of actor Mark Wahlberg and director Peter Berg feels like a natural successor to their previous collaboration Lone Survivor, another true story adapted into a movie that wallows in both heroism and violence. This film recounts the events of April 2010, when a drilling rig off the coast of Louisiana exploded, creating the biggest oil-spill in US history. It's the story of the people who were working there, and while there's a clear attempt to honour the memory of the 11 men who died that night, the cast and crew also want to create an entertaining action-disaster movie.

Wahlberg plays Mike, the chief technician on the Deepwater Horizon, an oil platform more than a half-hour flight from land. As the film opens, he kisses his wife (Kate Hudson) and daughter goodbye and heads off for a three-week shift alongside boss Jimmy (Kurt Russell), drilling foreman Jason (Ethan Suplee) and pilot Andrea (Gina Rodriguez). When some discrepancies delay their work, Mike finds himself under pressure from the corporate boss (John Malkovich) to get on with the work and get back on schedule. Under order to ignore some questionable safety tests, they carry on drilling until the well erupts, triggering a massive ball of flame.

After the increasingly tense build-up, the movie becomes a more traditional disaster movie, as characters run for their lives or dive into the inferno to save someone. Some of this is cleverly conceived and played out, including several striking set-pieces. But the main focus here is on rah-rah courage. The most heroic roles go to Wahlberg, Russell, O'Brien (as a driller) and Kirkpatrick (as a crane operator). While Malkovich chomps deliciously and villainously on the scenery. But the most engaging role goes to Rodriguez as a woman who is genuinely terrified about what's happening but still manages to do her job. She's the only person on-screen who feels like a real person, and the irony isn't lost that she's also the only woman among this crew of macho tough guys.

Kung Fu Panda 3 Review

Excellent

This animated trilogy concludes on a very high note with this smart, involving and often hilarious adventure. Both the writing and the animation are especially strong this time around, drawing in bigger themes while still keeping things both thrilling and very silly. But it's the endearing central characters who make it resonate.

As the Dragon Warrior, the panda Po (voiced by Jack Black) is struggling to rise to the challenge to become a teacher, coaxed by his master Shifu (Dustin Hoffman). He'd rather be out fighting battles with his five warrior pals Tigress, Monkey, Mantis, Viper and Crane (Angelina Jolie, Jackie Chan, Seth Rogen, Lucy Liu and David Cross). Then he meets his long-lost father Li (Bryan Cranston), who tells him of a secret homeland for pandas, where Po might be able to find himself. Meanwhile, the power-mad warlord Kai (J.K. Simmons) has broken through from the spirit realm, determined to collect the chi of every master in the mortal world. So it's rather urgent that Po discovers his own chi before Kai finds him.

This is far more than the usual story about discovering your place in life. It's a complex exploration of how our backgrounds and communities contribute to who we are, and why each of us has a distinct role to play. These themes emerge naturally through the snappy, sometimes exhilarating story and characters. In voicing Po, Black finds the perfect balance between goofiness and honest emotion that often eludes him in live-action roles. His interaction with all of the surrounding characters bristles with humour and insight, with sharply funny one-liners peppering every scene. Most of the side roles are spread very thinly, but both Cranston and Simmons register strongly, while Jolie and Hoffman get some solid scenes all their own. And Hudson's riotously flirtatious ribbon-dancing panda easily steals her scenes.

Goldie Hawn Talks About Her ''Incredible Ride'' With Kurt Russell

Goldie Hawn Kurt Russell Kate Hudson

Actress Goldie Hawn has called her 30-year relationship with Kurt Russell an ''incredible ride''. The actress, who is 68-years-old, has a 27-year-old child, Wyatt, which her partner, despite them choosing to never marry. Their long relationship has gone on mainly due to their shared goals, suggests Hawn, even though the couple have radically different personalities.

Hawn has stated that ''Relationships are always challenging because you're living with someone and two people are very different but it really is about, 'What are your core values? What are the things that matter to you? Kurt's quite different in many ways to what I am, and vice versa, but we want the same things out of life and so it's been an incredible ride with him. There's nobody like him. He's one of a kind. He's true blue and everything he says he means. You might not like it, but he sure does mean it. He's not political, he doesn't play games. I just have a lot of respect for him.''

Hawn has previously been married twice, with two children from her second husband, Bill Hudson, named Kate and Oliver Hudson. Two marriages seem to be enough for her, however, as she thinks it is 'nice', yet is not interested in pursuing it again. When asked about it on the Jonathon Ross show, Hawn spoke of the idea of marriage and why she had never married Russell, saying: ''I don't know, we just didn't get married. The relationship itself is a big deal. Marriage is a ceremony, which is nice, and it's a promise, which is nice, but you make that promise every day... Marriage does not necessarily mean that you're going to stay together and it really has to do with your will to be together, your devotion and your ability to listen to each other.''

Zach Braff may have won the award for the finest celebrity photobombing incident of all time, after an image of him cheekily smiling into the camera during a photo shoot for some newlyweds went viral this week. The image was taken in Times Square, New York City, where the newly wedded couple were having their photo taken on one of the crosswalks, only for Braff to walk past at the perfect moment and, if anything, make the wedding photo a million times better.

Braff, pictured with his pug, has caused an internet storm with the image

The goofy actor was noticed by wedding photographer Sascha Reinking, who upon discovering the image took to Twitter to call out the actor. On Thursday (21 Nov.) the photographer tweeted, "I might be mistaken but I think Zach Braff totally photobombed my newlywed couple. :) #zachbraff #scrubs #photobomb," later tweeting to Braff and congratulating him on a job well done. Braff later tweeted that the picture was "one of my best photobombs ever," and he even took to his FaceBook page to describe the photobombing incident as his "finest to date."

Lea Michele Says Kate Hudson Came To The Rescue After Cory's Death

Lea Michele Kate Hudson Cory Monteith Glee

Lea Michele has opened up about how co-star Kate Hudson took care of her during the days following the death of her on and off-screen boyfriend Cory Monteith.

It's been almost four months since the 31-year-old 'Glee' star was discovered dead in his hotel room following an overdose, and his partner Lea has been forced to stay strong in the face of the prying media. It hasn't been easy, however, as avoiding reporters was almost impossible in the wake of the incident and so she was forced to ring her trusted friend Kate Hudson who was only too happy to help.

"I called her and said, I don't know where I'm going to go because my house is swarmed [with reporters]" Lea told Elle in an interview for their December issue. "She was like, 'Oh, you're going to stay at my house'. Like it was nothing."

Peter Capaldi, The First 'Doctor Who' With An Oscar. Oh, You Didn't Know?

Peter Capaldi Richard E. Grant Ken Stott Ewan McGregor Kate Hudson

Peter Capaldi is a modest man. You'd never hear him boasting about winning an Oscar. Yep, the Glasgow-born actor, named as the new Time Lord last week, has more in his locker than the foul-mouthed and brilliant spin-doctor Malcolm Tucker from The Thick of It.

In 1995, Forrest Gump fended off competition from Pulp Fiction, The Shawshank Redemption and Four Weddings and a Funeral to win the Academy Award for Best Picture. Tom Hanks beat Morgan Freeman, Paul Newman and John Travolta to Best Actor, Jessica Lange for Best Actress for Blue Sky and Robert Zemeckis won Best Director.

However, look further down the list of winners and you'll find him. Peter Capaldi, winner of the Academy Award for Live Action Short Film for Franz Kafka's It's A Wonderful Life. Ok, so he tied the award with Peggy Rajski and Randy Stone's Trevor, but he still won.

Kate Hudson and mum Goldie Hawn apparently had a ball at last night’s charity dinner, hosted by the Novak Djokovic foundation. Even Naomi Campbell and tennis star Boris Becker were in attendance.

Goldie Hawn appeared in an elegant cream and gold gown - not the best for tennis, though.

The most active participants by far, were Hawn and Hudson, however, as sometime throughout the night, the daring actresses decided to hitch up their dresses and head over to the venue’s makeshift tennis court for a quick set, The Sun reports. While Hawn opted to merely hitch up the train of her stunning cream-and-gold dress, Hudson was a bit bolder, not only lifting up the skirts of her Ellie Saab gown, but also ditching the heels for added comfort.

Kate Hudson Talks Birthday Plans At Tiffany & Co. Bash

Kate Hudson Gwyneth Paltrow Sarah Jessica Parker

Actress Kate Hudson attended the Tiffany & Co. Blue Book Ball in New York City yesterday. Hudson wore a blue strapless Reem Acra number, and hung out with pals Sarah Jessica Parker and Gwyneth Paltrow. At the bash, Hudson also talked plans about her 34th birthday celebration. The actress explained for Us Weekly that she’d prefer a small gathering at home with close friends: "I think I might have a dinner at some point this week," Hudson said of her low-key plans. "I just want to hang with my family."

She also predicted the gift she might receive from her 9-year-old son, Ryder – it might be jewelry, but a far cry from a glitzy Tiffany piece: "Ryder makes things, so he's made me this beautiful tree out of sticks, and he took shells and painted them and made them the leaves of the tree. He's quite an artist, so he made me and painted butterflies and gave them to me," she said of past presents. "And he likes to make me jewelry. He's made me some bracelets that are just adorable!"

Kate Hudson Claims She's "A Lot Less Rock Chick" These Days

Kate Hudson Muse Matt Bellamy Chris Robinson

In an interview with Elle magazine, Kate Hudson has declared that her days as a wild child are well and truly behind her, as she focuses on family life with her partner – Muse frontman Matt Bellamy – and her two children, Ryder (from a previous relationship with Black Crowes’ Chris Robinson) and Bingham. Kate fell pregnant with Bingham just two moths after she and Matt started dating but she says that although she was shocked by the sudden pregnancy, she thought to herself “this is going to be interesting.”

Talking about her current lifestyle, Kate revealed “I’m a lot less rock chick and a lot more about being a good mother, a good partner. I’m part of a family.” Hudson has a strong strain of rock and roll in her past though. Not only is she best known for her role in the rock movie Almost Famous, but she was previously married to the Black Crowes’ frontman Chris Robinson, before settling down with Muse singer Matt Bellamy. Matt and Kate met at the rock festival Coachella, though their relationship took a sudden turn when she unexpectedly fell pregnant.

“It was all very old-fashioned and proper and we went on lovely dates. And two months later I was pregnant… knew it would take a strong man to deal with it. You know that with a relationship things can go either way when you have a child… When you get pregnant everything changes: you, your body. Everything becomes a big decision. But he was there and that was that. Now it's three wonderful years later. Things happen for a reason.”

A Little Bit Of Heaven Review

OK
Shot in the style of a bland Hollywood rom-com, this film is actually a weepie drama with a bit of magical realism thrown in. It's such an odd hybrid that we're never sure whether we should laugh or cry. So we do neither.

Marley (Hudson) is a high-flying New Orleans advertising exec who doesn't believe that romance is necessary. Although she does have loyal friends: ditsy colleague Sarah (Punch), happy family woman Renee (DeWitt) and cheerful neighbour Peter (Malco). On the other hand, she tries to avoid to her estranged, warring parents (Bates and Williams). Then during a medical test, she has a vision of God (Goldberg), who grants her three wishes before she dies of cancer. But she certainly isn't seeking the love that grows between her and Julian (Garcia Bernal), her doctor.

Bride Wars Review

Good
Code Name: The Cleaner. BloodRayne. Grandma's Boy. White Noise. Elektra. Are We There Yet?

These are not preliminary selections for the inaugural class of an as-yet-unfounded Hollywood Hall of Shame. They are instead the most recent cinematic abominations to have been released in the early weeks of the new year, dating back to 2005. My colleagues and I regularly joke that if a studio hopes to bury a movie in the cold, efficient style of the mob hiding Jimmy Hoffa, they release it in early January (late August is a suitable alternative). And I've long believed if an intelligent studio sought a surefire hit, they'd counter-program a halfway decent film against the post-holiday garbage, then sit back and watch the box-office receipts pour in.

Fool's Gold Review

Terrible
Matt Damon does a mean Matthew McConaughey impersonation. The two hung out when they were struggling actors trying to break into the business, giving the former ample opportunity to study the latter's casual mannerisms. According to Damon's spot-on imitation, the chiseled McConaughey spends most of his time looking for an excuse to take off his shirt. Barbecue in the backyard? No shirt required. Church services on a Sunday morning? Leave the shirt at home.

This helps explain McConaughey's presence in Fool's Gold. The adventure-comedy is as pretty as it is dumb, but seeing as how it's set in the Caribbean, it does allow McConaughey ample opportunity to flex his pecs and sun his shoulders. Too bad for us it offers little else.

Gossip Review

Weak
I have quickly found myself tiring of the peculiar tedium of the gritty twentysomething whodunit. While I'll fess up to having liked Cruel Intentions, recent films like Body Shots and The Skulls have left a sour taste in my mouth.

Gossip does not get rid of that taste.

Raising Helen Review

Weak
The poster for Raising Helen features Kate Hudson, in a pose suited for a bearskin rug, sporting shorts shorter than the Hulk's temper and fuzzy boots last seen at the hottest strip joint in Anchorage. It's an attempt at marketing a warm and fuzzy movie for guys 25 to 34, but the poster is really a harbinger for how misguided Garry Marshall's latest effort is.

Raising Helen is all about Hudson, who stars in the title role, when it should focus on other topics -- the ties of family, coping with tragedy, and starting your life from scratch. The movie harps on how Helen's glamorous life is turned upside down when she is bequeathed her sister's three kids. The story should be on how hard it is for the kids, rather than Helen's bemoaning how fat her ass has gotten.

The Four Feathers Review

Weak
In grade school, history lessons were painfully boring, but at least we learned the facts. I wish the same could be said for history lessons found in today's movies. Last year, Pearl Harbor wasted an opportunity to study the December 7 invasion - rather, it chose to pursue a useless love triangle. The Four Feathers is nothing more than an equally bad retread of Pearl Harbor. It has little to do with the history regarding British colonialism it seeks to explore; in fact, I doubt the film is even historically accurate. And, like the details of the Japanese attack in Pearl Harbor, the historical events in The Four Feathers only exist to provide the framework for the telling of a predictable and implausible romance.

Harry Faversham (Heath Ledger), a soldier with the British Army, is unwilling to travel into the Sudan with the rest of his regimen to protect British interests there. So, he resigns his commission. In response, Harry's fellow soldiers issue him three feathers symbolizing his cowardice for leaving. Looking for support, he turns to his father (a former military officer), who disowns him. As well, his fiancé Ethne (Kate Hudson), who provides a fourth feather and calls off their engagement. Unable to cope with the harsh reactions his decision prompts, Harry hastily departs for the Sudan to find a way to help his friends and redeem his honor.

The Skeleton Key Review

Weak

A first-rate concept for a spine-tingling tale of voodoo, hoodoo and possible hauntings in the swampy Louisiana bayou, "The Skeleton Key" is rendered impotent by bland, generic execution.

The wannabe chiller stars Kate Hudson as a New Orleans hospice nurse named Caroline who takes a job at a remote, run-down plantation manor, looking after a mute and paralyzed elderly stroke victim (played with eerie, deceptive vacancy by John Hurt) in what will probably be his last weeks of life.

Caroline is selfish, snooping and disrespectful (having an unsympathetic heroine is another of the movie's problems), so soon she beings sticking her nose where it doesn't belong -- opening attic doors that have been locked for decades and digging into the house's history. Doing so raises the ire of her patient's bitterly old-fashioned and superstitious Southern wife (Gena Rowlands), but more importantly it puts the skeptical Caroline on a path toward believing in the ghosts of lynched former servants that the old lady claims haunt the place.

The Four Feathers Review

Terrible

All sweeping desert vistas and melodramatic 19th Century British imperial clichés (updated with politically correct tisk-tisking, of course), Shekhar Kapur's "The Four Feathers" is a hollow-hearted epic for the sake of an epic.

The tedious seventh film adaptation of A.E.W. Manson's turn-of-the-Century flag-waving war novel about the heroic redemption of craven English army officer, the film stars Heath Ledger ("A Knight's Tale," "Monster's Ball") as Harry Feversham, a highly respected young soldier who resigns his commission -- for reasons related to panic, not principle -- just as his regiment is being shipped off for the first time to battle Sudanese rebels.

"I never wanted to join the army," he whines. "I did it for my father. I thought I'd serve out my commission a year or two."

Alex & Emma Review

Zero

After wishing I could claw my eyes out through "How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days" and now "Alex and Emma" -- the two worst romantic comedies of the year to say the very least -- if I never see another Kate Hudson movie it will be too soon.

The bland but likable young actress has made nothing but stinkers since showing early promise as a slapstick comedienne in "200 Cigarettes" and playing a hesitant bride-to-be in "Dr. T and the Women" before peaking in 2000's "Almost Famous," starring as a rock-band groupie with a heart of gold. But in 2003, she's played two insufferable, irritating-passing-as-cute romantic leads in a row, in two insufferably dopey, counter-programming chick flicks.

February's "Lose a Guy" (up against male-targeted blockbusters "Shanghai Knights" and "Daredevil") featured Hudson as a superficial magazine relationship columnist who deliberately sets out to snare a boyfriend then drive him away -- and in the process has the same effect on any viewer without a fortified tolerance for women who act nauseatingly clingy, cutesy-poo and insecure.

Very Good

After spending the better part of his adult life in a storm of estrogen, OB-GYN Dr. Sullivan Travis (Richard Gere) is still a man in awe of women and still at a loss to understand them.

The fashionable gynecologist to every flaky high society dame in Dallas, his overbooked office waiting room is always a circus of air-kissing aristocrats in leopard print hats and feather boas.

At home he has a wife (Farrah Fawcett) who may be ready for a stay at a well-heeled asylum. Also under his roof are one slightly ditzy daughter (Kate Hudson) preoccupied with planning her deluxe wedding and another offspring (Tara Reid) who wants to throw a wrench in the works because she's suspicious of the curious influence the bourgeois maid of honor (Liv Tyler) seems to have over her sister.
