Bates is to be the primary star of 'Disjointed', which has been snapped up for 20 episodes by Netflix.
Following massive successes with the likes of ‘The Big Bang Theory’ and ‘Two and a Half Men’, writer Chuck Lorre’s new sitcom ‘Disjointed’ has found a home on Netflix for its debut season, and has also announced its star in the form of Kathy Bates.
Having been the subject of bidding wars between traditional networks and streaming services, Netflix has landed Lorre’s new project and has snapped up 20 episodes. Co-written by Lorre and ‘The Daily Show’s David Javerbaum and produced by Warner Bros, it’s to be shot in front of an audience in a ‘multi-camera’ style.
Kathy Bates is to be the star of Chuck Lorre's new sitcom 'Disjointed'
The script for ‘Disjointed’ has been in circulation since January this year. A workplace comedy set in a Los Angeles-based cannabis dispensary, it will feature the two-time Emmy and one-time Oscar winner Bates as the shop’s owner and “lifelong advocate for marijuana legalisation”, living with three shop-workers, her mid-twenties son and a troubled security guard.

The decision reunites Bates, 68, with Lorre for the first time since she played the reincarnated ‘ghost of Charlie Harper’ in ‘Two and a Half Men’ back in 2012.
It comes as Netflix announced roughly a year ago that it was ploughing almost $5 billion into original programming. In terms of sitcoms, it has notably recently picked up the Emma Stone and Jonah Hill vehicle ‘Maniac’, plus Drew Barrymore’s ‘Santa Clarita Diet’.
Despite the subject matter, comedies based around pot have been quite successful and in-demand of late, with ‘Highland’ finding a home on Amazon, ‘High Maintenance’ on HBO and the current development of ‘Buds’ happened on NBC.
Writer Lorre, 63, has often been criticised for low-brow and obvious comedy, but it can’t be denied that he has an incredible track record of producing ratings hits, with ‘The Big Bang Theory’ set to be the longest-running sitcom in US history and the likes of ‘Mike & Molly’, ‘Dharma & Greg’ and ‘Mom’ in his CV.
