TV and radio personality Katie Derham has become the latest celebrity name to sign up for ‘Strictly Come Dancing’ later this year. The ex-ITV newsreader and current presenter of the BBC Proms announced that she’ll be participated in the show when it returns in September, which she described as a “national treasure”.

Derham, 45, is the fifth contestant to join the 2015 edition of the ever-popular dance competition, and she gave the following statement after being announced on Saturday (August 15th). “I’m extremely excited to be part of such a wonderful show… …I spend hours admiring professional musicians and performers at the Proms, so I’m thrilled to have the chance to throw myself into an equally demanding and beautiful world. It will be a totally new experience for me and I can’t wait to get going.”

Eagle-eyed fans of all things ‘Strictly’ may recall that this won’t be the first time that she’s put herself under the scrutiny of the judges. In 2011, she was a contestant in the charity fundraising contest ‘Newsroom’s Got Talent’, which was refereed by ex-‘Strictly’ judge Arlene Phillips and professional dancer Anton Du Beke.

She has been hesitant to consider joining the show in the past – back in 2007, she said: “would I go on it? I only think I’m a good dancer when I’ve had a couple of glasses of wine and I suspect that sober and in front of an audience of seven million I would be rubbish so I think I ought to pass on that one.”

Katie Derham follows BBC presenter Jeremy Vine, TV chef Ainsley Harriott and soap stars Kellie Bright (‘EastEnders’) and Georgia May Foote (‘Coronation Street’) on ‘Strictly’ 2015, which will be kicking off on BBC One in September.
