The Smurfs 2 has succeeded in some ways...
Wow; you are witnessing history here. We’re pretty sure this is a first for film: The Smurfs 2 is actually worse than The Smurfs. That’s right, the sequel to the 2011 3D animation of those iconic mini blue people has outdone its predecessor, by being awful.
Katy Perry probably hasn't even read the reviews
We’re not being mean, not by any means. In fact, we’re not even talking about our review. These are the critics talking, and they’ve submitted a mauling for Katy Perry and Nel Patrick Harris’ latest efforts.
While 2011’s The Smurfs disappointed with a 22% rating on review aggregator site, Rotten Tomatoes, the 2013 version has plummeted to 17% - that’s even lower than Lone Ranger, the Johnny Depp film that may have turned the actor off… acting.
Check out this 'I'm too Smurfy' clip, but be warned, it's really weird
“Its tolerant messages remain buried beneath lame pop-culture references, hectic slapstick, fart jokes, and endless Smurf-puns that-Azaria's funny, over-the-top cartoon villainy aside-make one pine for the Smurfpocalypse,” say Village Voice, while Time Out NY reckon “Patient Adult Smurfs will be checking their watches as Excitable Child Smurfs lose themselves in the high jinks.”
If you are in fact an adult Smurf and your little one is keen on seeing this film, we recommend you do the following: convince your child that anyone blue is bad. Probably racist somehow, but realistically, you’re only going to be cultivating a fear of the Blue Man Group, and they’re not still going are they?
While Neil Patrick Harris is counting his dough
Sony/Columbia won’t really care what he reviews are saying. They’ll be more interested in the box office figures, and given that The Smurfs managed to rake in $563m worldwide, no critic will be able to dampen sprits should The Smurfs 2 match that figure.
