Keanu Reeves has made an explosive return to Hollywood in the action-adventure 47 Ronin, directed by The Gift's Carl Rinsch. The movie follows the story of 47 strong team of fearless samurai who seek vengeance after a treacherous warlord kills their master and banishes their kind.

Driven from their homes, the samurai seek the help of Kai (Reeves), a half-breed they once rejected, who helps fight across a savage world of mythic beasts, shape-shifting witchcraft and wondrous terrors.

'47 Ronin' comes with baggage. Specifically the $170 million budget entrusted in a director with relatively little feature film experience.

"Carl Rinsch had been kicking around for years, but when he made [the 2010 short] The Gift, it got sent around and it created a frenzy," producer-manager Darin Friedman told the Hollywood Reporter, "That doesn't happen without that perfect storm of the right idea executed well, with the technology to share it virally."

Though the likes of David Fincher and Michael Bay have made successful transitions from commercials and music videos to big-budget Hollywood movies, Rinsch needs (needed) to be careful. You may remember in 1999, when Universal gave commercial director Kinka Usher $70 to make the superhero spoof Mystery Man. The film grossed only $33 million. It had been making commercials ever since.

47 Ronin is released on Christmas Day 2013. Risky, risky, risky.
