Keira Knightley Returning To 'Pirates Of The Caribbean' After Ten-Year Absence

Keira Knightley Orlando Bloom Johnny Depp Javier Bardem

A brand new Japanese trailer for the forthcoming Pirates of the Caribbean movie Salazar’s Revenge / Dead Men Tell No Tales has revealed Keira Knightley to be making a return to the film franchise as Elizabeth Swann, after nearly a decade’s absence.

It had originally been thought that Knightley wouldn’t be returning for the fifth instalment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise, having not featured in any of the Disney film series since 2007’s At World’s End.

But now, in what was presumably intended to be a well-kept secret by the studio until the film’s release next month, the 32 year old actress’s character Elizabeth looks set to be reunited with Will Turner (Orlando Bloom) and son Henry (Brenton Thwaites).

Collateral Beauty Review

OK

Dramas exploring the nature of death and the true meaning of life are always in danger of tipping over into extreme sentimentality, and this one very quickly gets bogged down in buckets of syrup. It's a slickly made movie with a first-rate cast, but occasional glimpses of gritty honesty aren't quite enough to counteract sudsy philosophising that sounds profound but is actually rather shallow.

It's set in New York, where advertising company owner Howard (Will Smith) is still lost in grief six months after the death of his 6-year-old daughter. And his business partners are worried that the company is falling apart as a result. In desperation, best pal Whit (Edward Norton), protege Claire (Kate Winslet) and rising-star Simon (Michael Pena) hire a private detective (Ann Dowd) to determine Howard's mental fitness to run the company. They also hire three actors to confront him as Love (Keira Knightley), Time (Jacob Latimore) and Death (Helen Mirren), abstract concepts he's obsessed with. But they don't know that Howard is also considering attending a grief counselling meeting run by Madeleine (Naomie Harris).

Directed with a magical sheen by David Frankel (Hope Springs) and written to within an inch of its life by Allan Loeb (The Switch), there's nothing about this film that doesn't feel contrived and controlled. In addition to their scenes with Howard, each of the three actors has an impact on the colleague who needs their specific gifts. And there are a number of revelations and twists that feel annoyingly hokey. Even so, the cast is strong enough to add moments of lightness that lift the movie briefly out of the sludge. Mirren, Knightley and Latimore have a sparky edge as the story's catalysts. While Norton, Winslet and Pena bring some raw, honest emotion to their own personal dramas.

Director John Carney Publicly Apologises For Bashing Keira Knightley's Work On 'Begin Again'

Keira Knightley John Carney

Disgraced director John Carney has issued a public apology to his movie's star Keira Knightley after 'I'll never make a film with supermodels again' tirade in which he slammed the A-list actress for her work on his film 'Begin Again'. He calls his unfair comments 'arrogant and disrespectful'.

Andrew Lincoln Thinks His Love Actually Character Was A Bit Of A 'Stalker'

Andrew Lincoln Keira Knightley

Love Actually is considered one of the most romantic films of all time and the scene where Andrew Lincoln’s character confesses his love for Keira Knightley is one of the movie’s most memorable moments. But 12 years on, Lincoln might just have said what we’ve all been secretly thinking, that his character is actually a bit of a stalker.

Andrew LincolnEven Andrew Lincoln thinks his Love Actually character was a bit of a stalker.

Speaking about his character Mark, Lincoln told The Wrap: “He is a stalker. That was my question to Richard Curtis, ‘Do you not think we’re sort of borderline stalker territory here?’ And he said, ‘No, no. Not with you playing it, darling. You’ll be alright.’”

Keira Knightley has always baffled the world with her first name's unique spelling, but as it turns out, rather than it being creative license on the part of her parents, it was a simple spelling mistake that less than impressed her father.

Keira Knightley has done well despite the difficult start her name had

In an interview with Elle magazine, the 29-year-old Pirates of the Caribbean star explained that she was supposed to be named after the Russian figure skater Kiera Ivanova but her mother got the spelling wrong when she went to register the birth. Apparently, this didn't go down too well with Mr Knightley.

'Say When' Continues Knightley's Growth As An Actress

Keira Knightley Chloe Moretz

Keira Knightley is having a great year, with three performances that mark a clear turn in her career. She's throwing herself into roles with a loose abandon that brings out her own sparky personality in hitherto unseen ways. After surprising everyone with her raw singing talent in 'Begin Again', she now takes on a grown-up coming-of-age role in 'Say When' (aka 'Laggies'). And her strikingly open-handed performance in 'The Imitation Game' is still to come.

Chloë Grace Moretz appears alongside Knightley in 'Say When'

Knightley broke through with her lead role in the 2002 sleeper hit 'Bend It Like Beckham', a football movie that isn't quite as good as most people remember it being. Knightley's performance is rather stiff, but she has undeniable screen charisma, which is what landed her as the heroine in the first 'Pirates of the Caribbean' trilogy. A small role in 'Love Actually' and a strangely goth action-girl Guinevere in 2004's 'King Arthur' followed, plus the first glimpse of her acting chops in John Maybury's little-seen 'The Jacket', opposite Adrien Brody.

Five years ago, an official apology was finally issued by the British government regarding the appalling treatment of Alan Turing following his victory in cracking Germany's Enigma Code during World War II. On discovering that he was having a homosexual relationship, he was prosecuted by the courts and ultimately given treatment designed to reduce his ability to have sexual relationships. Now, decades on, his legacy is brought back in film, with the extraordinary Benedict Cumberbatch in the role, who's more than grateful for such an opportunity.

Apes, Transformers And Dragons: But Where Are The Women In The Summer Blockbusters 2014?

Keira Knightley Andy Serkis Mark Wahlberg Michael Bay

Summer has arrived (if you ignore the weekend rain) and so have some fantastic cinematic blockbusters. There’s exciting viewing for everyone: out-and-out action, talking apes on a CGI-level almost incomprehensible, tamed dragons, a cinematic experiment that took 12 years to make and a romantic comedy to satisfy your sentimental side. However, if you delve a little deeper, an inescapable fact arises and the question has to be asked: where are all the women?

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes
Andy Serkis in the visually phenomenal Dawn of the Planet of the Apes. But the cast has very few women

Dawn of the Planet of the Apes looks epic. The story, the action and the special effects set the stage for a movie of fantastic proportions. But there are only two prominent female figures to at least 10 main male characters, both ape and human alike. In the ape world, the woman is Caesar’s wife, giving birth and feeling unwell afterwards for most of the movie. In the human world, we have one woman in a five-strong male group who are daring to enter into the carefully constructed world of the apes.

Why We Should Leave Naturally Slim Keira Knightley Alone!

Keira Knightley Jessica Alba

Anna Karenina star Keira Knightley showed up to Chanel’s runway show at Paris Fashion Week wearing a Karl Lagerfield design, which appears to be the designer’s modern take on the classic Chanel suit, most famously worn by Jackie Kennedy. Rarely does one outfit cause so much hubbub, particularly one which, at the end of the day, really is just a dress suit. It’s not like this particular one was made entirely out of raw meat, as if anybody would ever wear anything like that...

keira knightley chanel suit Keira is almost as famous for her slim figure as her acting

The top of the suit was cropped to reveal a black panel between the top and the matching full midi-length skirt. The dress is one of Lagerfeld’s “illusion” designs, the dark panel covering Knightley’s midriff designed to create the appearance of a narrower torso by cinching in the waist. The problem lies with the fact that Keira’s frame is so naturally slight to begin with. Knightley is hardly a woman that benefits from her body being made to look any slimmer than it is, the effect being that the “illusion” concept behind the dress backfired. Instead, Keira was criticised for looking underweight and unhealthy in the dress and labeled a bad role model for young women in an age when they look to celebrities to define healthy body image.

The best rumour this week is that Judi Dench may play Mon Mothma in Star Wars Episode VII, which director Jj Abrams starts shooting in the UK this spring. The character is a rebel leader in both III: Revenge of the Sith and VI: Return of the Jedi, but there's no foundation to this story. Rumours have been rampant over recent weeks and are bound to get even more inventive in the coming months. The original Luke Skywalker Mark Hamill has been keeping his lips tightly sealed when being quizzed about 'Star Wars VII'.

The year's first blockbuster, Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit, held its UK premiere this week before the spy adventure's British opening this weekend. Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit Review

Good

There's nothing very original in this spy thriller, but director Branagh gives the film a weighty sense of importance that at least makes it feel important. He can't make up for the flimsy plot or cliched characters, but he can coax shaded performances from the cast to grab our interest. And while the action is never as coherent as a Bourne movie, it at least has a sense of gravitas about it.

For yet another reboot of the Tom Clancy franchise, we go back earlier to follow Jack Ryan (Pine) as he is inspired by the 9/11 attacks to leave his financial studies and join the Marines. Shot down over Afghanistan, he undergoes a gruelling recovery and is recruited by CIA operative Harper (Costner) to work undercover on Wall Street, monitoring terrorist fund movements. A decade later his girlfriend Catherine (Knightley) has no idea what his real job is, so when she surprises him on a business trip to Moscow she ends up in the middle of an operation to investigate shady Russian businessman Cherevin (Branagh), who's behind some sort of imminent global attack.

The film's brisk pace focusses on Jack's motivations all the way through, so we understand his earnest desire to serve his country. Although we can't quite figure out how he developed all these he-man skills working behind a desk in a bank. Not only is he adept at firearms and hand-to-hand combat, but he can ride a motorcycle like a stuntman! Fortunately, Pine's everyman persona makes him easy to identify with and bodes well for future franchise instalments. Opposite him, Costner is marvellously lean and cool, Branagh has terrific lip-less menace and Knightley does her best in the standard underdeveloped female role.

Keira Knightley Admits Joining 'Jack Ryan: Shadow Recruit' To Lose Typecast For Tragic Roles

Director Kenneth Branagh, screenwriter Hossein Amini and hands on producer Lorenzo di Bonaventura have brought Ryan wilfully into the modern age with Shadow Recruit and as you could probably tell from the casting of Chris Pine as the titular Ryan, the film incorporates a younger cast for a franchise enabling launchpad of a movie. Pine rolled up to the premiere of the film looking sharp in a black, tie-less suit and sporting a cheeky bit of stubble, strolling down the red carpet to pose for photos with fans and answer some questions. Before the premiere, the actor and some of his film associates were on hand to discuss the film and its possible direction at a Paramount press conference (via Cinema Blend).

One Direction Are Officially The Richest Youngsters In Britain

One Direction Daniel Radcliffe Robert Pattinson Keira Knightley Emma Watson Adele Rupert Grint Calvin Harris Cheryl Cole Leona Lewis

One Direction really do have everything after all. In a recently compiled list by Heat Magazine, the boy were revealed as the highest earning entertainment stars under-30's in the UK, with a combined worth of almost £60 million. Individually, the boys would be placed just outside the top ten, however when their wealth is combined they come out on top by a narrow margin.

One Direction
Young, successful and very rich

Last years top spot holder, Harry Potter star Daniel Radcliffe, was ousted by the combined earning power of the mega-successful boy band, who have an estimated worth of over £12 million each. The boys were included to the list as a joint entity because most of their earnings have been made as a group, rather than through independent ventures. Narrowly missing out on reclaiming his top spot for a third time, Radcliffe came in second this year with £56.19 million. Something tells us that the Kill Your Darlings actor isn't losing too much sleep over being ousted from the top spot.

The film differs from past 'Ryan' outings, going back to the very beginnings of Ryan's career when he was a young CIA analyst trying to juggle his high octane profession and his marriage to Cathy (Knightley), who he met three years ago and who is completely oblivious to what he does for a living. Things take a turn for the unexpected with Ryan when he finds himself as the target in an assassin attempt, at which point he discovers a devious plot involving Russian terrorists to launch a major attack across the globe, invariably damaging various major cities in the world in a bid to destroy the US economy.

Keira Knightley Looks Likely To Land Role In Upcoming Alan Turing Biopic

Keira Knightley Benedict Cumberbatch

Keira Knightley could be starring alongside Benedict Cumberbatch in the upcoming biopic of Enigma codebreaker Alan Turing in an upcoming biopic on his life. Variety broke the news that the English rose is being courted by producers of the film, which is set to be titled The Imitation Game and is being financed by Black Bear Pictures and Amersand Pictures.

The script for the film has been in the works since 2011 and is believed to have been completed by now, with Headhunters director Morten Tyldum signed on to direct the film. The script is based on Andrew Hodges’ biography on the great mathematician, Alan Turing: The Enigma, with Graham Moore (Pirates vs. Ninjas) handling the screenplay for the movie. The film is still awaiting a distributor, however given the big name stars lined-up to star in the film it shouldn't take long for someone to pick it up.

A mathematical genius and one of the founders of modern computing, Turing was one of the chief scientists responsible for cracking the German 'Enigma Code' during the Second World War, an act that has been credited for shortening the war effort against the Nazis by up to two years. Despite his immense contribution to the war, which was kept secret until government papers were made public some 60-years after his exploits, he was prosecuted by the British services in the early 1950s for being homosexual. His achievements were kept secret from the public and his family and Turing committed suicide in 1954, yet despite ending his life at such a young age he had made such a massive contribution to the advances of computer science and modern mathematic that he is still revered by his peers today.

50 Shades Has Maybe Possibly Found Its Director In Joe Wright

JOE WRIGHT Keira Knightley

Director JOE WRIGHT is known for his skillful adaptations of literary classics like “Anna Karenina” and “Pride and Prejudice”, but he’s casting his gaze on an entirely different film this time, namely “50 Shades of Grey”. The news, first announced by Variety and The Hollywood Reporter, hasn’t been confirmed yet, but Wright is reportedly the frontrunner for the directorial seat on Focus Features and Universal’s latest project. Some other names reportedly in the mix are other members of the art house genre, such as Bennett Miller (“Capote,” “Moneyball”), Gus Van Sant ("Good Will Hunting," "Milk") and Patty Jenkins (“Monster”).

Additionally, Wright’s go-to lead actress, star of “Atonement” and “Anna Karenina”, Keira Knightly was also reportedly considered for the main part of clean-cut, virginal (initially) college student Anastacial Steele, who enters into a dishy relationship with billionaire Christian Grey. But, then again, so was almost every other actress in Hollywood. Mila Kunis, Kristen Stewart and Nina Dobrev are among the latest actresses rumored for the part. Meanwhile, Knightley has denied any engagement with the project whatsoever. From so many avid denials (Emma Watson, Knightley and a host of others have made it clear they were not interested) it doesn't seem like the project is faring too well. Perhaps with the highbrow director, "Fifty Shades" will have a chance to escape the mommy porn genre.

'Anna Karenina' Director Joe Wright To Helm Risque 'Fifty Shades' Movie?

JOE WRIGHT E.L. James Keira Knightley

JOE WRIGHT is rumoured to direct the upcoming movie adaptation of E.L. James' best-selling erotica novel 'Fifty Shades of Grey'.

The director looks to be a firm choice for Focus and Universal who bought the rights to the trilogy in 2012, according to The Hollywood Reporter, as he has been at the helm of five award winning features linked to the production companies including the Oscar winning 'Anna Karenina' and 'Atonement', and the four-time Academy Award  nominee 'Pride & Prejudice'. Of course, this might also suggest that Keira Knightley may be up for the controversial role of Anastasia Steele given that she has been the female protagonist in all of those films and that she is no stranger to kinky characters having been subjected to erotic spanking in David Cronenberg's Freudian flick 'A Dangerous Method'.

Although we know that 'Terra Nova' writer Kelly Marcel will be adapting the screenplay, there is actually no solid deal announced between Wright and Focus/Universal. Keira may also have objections to the role, having previously told MTV in regards to her next movie project, 'It's not going to be Fifty Shades of Grey. You know, I normally don't like to give a definite about anything, but I can definitely say it will not be Fifty Shades of Grey.'

She Should Coco: Keira Knightley To Star In Karl Lagerfeld's Coco Chanel Movie

Keira Knightley Karl Lagerfeld COCO CHANEL

Keira Knightley is among a host of stars due to star in a short film about the iconic fashion designer COCO CHANEL. The movie, is being created to mark the 100th anniversary of the French fashion house Chanel and will be directed by Karl Lagerfeld, the label’s current creative director, The Independent reports. Lagerfeld and Knightley share a mutual respect for each other and the designer often cites Keira as a muse.

The movie will be set on the French seaside town of Deauville, where the very first Chanel boutique opened up in 1913, after being financed by Captain Arthur Edward ‘Boy’ Capel. The crew were ordered to build “detailed retro sets” to recreate the era. The 27 year old actress is already a Chanel favourite, having fronted their Coco Mademoiselle perfume campaign, though the ad was pulled for being ‘overtly suggestive.’ She will be joined by Stella Tennant, Tallulah Harlech, Clotilde Hesme and Brad Kroenig in the promotional movie. It’s due to be screened at Chanel’s Cruise Show in Singapore.

Keira spoke about Lagerfeld last year, saying “Karl’s amazing. He’s an avid reader, and he speaks about five different languages, so he’ll be rattling off in English to you and in French to someone else, and in German to someone else and then the phone rings and he’s speaking Italian.”

Was Keira Knightley's Chanel Advert Really Sexually Suggestive?

Keira Knightley COCO CHANEL

A perfume advert featuring British actress Keira Knightley has been banned during children's television programming because it is deemed too sexually suggestive. Why fragrance giant Chanel is advertising its products during ad breaks for children's television remains to be seen, though the Advertising Standards Authority ruled that its commercial for the Coco Mademoiselle ad was unsuitable for younger viewers.

According to the BBC, the watchdog investigated after a complaint was made from a viewer who saw the ad during the film Ice Age 2. Chanel said a degree of sexual charge was common in its perfume ads, though the commercial in question shows Keira Knightley being photographed on a bed while a photographer unzips her clothes. She is then shown dressed only in a bed sheet and crawling towards him before lying down. A spokesperson for the Advertising Standards Authority said they decided it was unsuitable for children. "We therefore concluded that the ad was inappropriately scheduled and an ex-kids restriction should have been applied to prevent the ad from being broadcast in or around children's programming," they said.

The watchdog ruled that Chanel must not broadcast the Keira Knightley ad again around programmes of particular appeal to children.

Little has caused more contention in the contactmusic office than our recent discussion about the Christmas films list! Obviously, everyone has their own favourite, and to them that will always be the top of the list. One thing that became all too clear to us was that - with the exception of Elf & Bad Santa - there really hasn't been too many full blown Christmas films so we'd like to make a plea to Bill Murray and the other Hollywood greats - PLEASE make a new (top quality) Christmas film to join these festive favourites!

I can't say we particularly advocate parents encouraging their offspring to watch films above their age certificate, but it appears we all grew up in houses that didn't really mind what we watched - and let's face it, some of the best Christmas films might have a few boobs or rowdy drunken behaviour... As children of the 80's and 90's, we're fully aware that there's original to some of these remakes, but as is always the way, these are the films we grew up with and as such, they are our favourites.

Enough explanation, in no particular order here are the films we recommend you watch over the holidays!

Anna Karenina Likely To Be Left Out At The Oscars?

Keira Knightley Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences

We're still in 2012, but already talk of who will win what at next years Oscar ceremony is widespread across the web. One picture that isn't feeling the love so much is period picture Anna Karenina, which hits US cinemas today.

Keira Knightley's latest costume drama has received relatively wide-spread acclaim so far, but that doesn't mean that she or the film itself will be given so much as a how-do-you-do when the shortlist of the Academy Awards is announced early next year. In terms of Best Picture, both The Dark Knight Rises and Disney Pixar's Brave are placed above the Leo Tolstoy adaptation and we all know how well superhero and animated films perform at the Oscars. Argo is currently the bookie's favourite to take home the top gong, with Lincoln a close second.

As for Knightley and her chances of getting hold of a Best Actress award, things aren't looking too great there either. Jennifer Lawrence's turn in Silver Linings Playlist looks like everyone's favourite to pick up the award at only her second time of asking, with Sally Field (Lincoln), Anne Hathaway (Les Miserables) and Marion Cotillard (Rust and Bone) all placed above the Brit by bookmakers.

Keira Knightley starred in the off-the-wall adaptation of Tolstory novel Anna Karenina

There's been talk about it for months; just what has director JOE WRIGHT done to Tolstoy's literary classic Anna Karenina? Both cast and crew have promised a re-telling of the the tragic tale of Russian socialite Karenina's affair with Count Vronsky that veers away from previous adaptations, and from the reviews that have thus far come out that certainly seems to be what they've committed to. Our own Rich Cline wrote "the most impressive thing about this film is its astoundingly beautiful design: the sets, costumes, photography and music are sumptuous and lush, never fussy but always adding to the intensity of each scene. Look for it to deservedly hoover up Oscar nominations across the board." Others have also pointed out the design, which has moved the tale from its typically austere surroundings into something of an otherworldliness.

Keira Knightley: Wait A Minute, Maybe I Am Anorexic?

Keira Knightley JOE WRIGHT

Keira Knightley, the British actress currently starring in JOE WRIGHT's big-screen adaptation of Tolstoy's Anna Karenina, admits she almost convinced herself that she was anorexic after a media storm over her weight. Knightley spoke in-depth about the matter during an interview with Allure magazine, which she also covers for November.

Despite regularly finding herself in the 'most beautiful' lists, the Oscar-nominated actress admits she isn't entirely comfortable with her body and admitted that rumors concerning her thin figure hit her "pretty hard," saying, "Because you go, oh, maybe that's right! I knew I wasn't anorexic, but maybe my body is somehow not right," she said. "When you're going through a period where you're really getting a lot of criticism, you go, maybe all this is right!" After becoming tabloid fodder for years, Knightley is notoriously private about her relationships these days. She's currently engaged to the Klaxons keyboardist James Righton though insists she's a little stuck as to how she's going to keep her wedding a secret from the media, "Maybe I'll be permanently engaged!" she joked.

The 27-year-old Londoner certainly doesn't have to worry about her career, having become one of the most sought after leading ladies in Hollywood. Though reviews of Anna Karenina have been lukewarm, critics agree on Knightley's assured performance. Richard Corliss of Time Magazine said "Knightley embodies Anna as a girlish woman who has never felt erotic love; once smitten, she is raised to heavenly ecstasy before tumbling into the abyss of shame." Knighley recently completed filming Can a Song Save Your Life? a comedy drama about a dejected music business executive who forms a bond with a young singer-songwriter. Anna Karenina hits theaters in the U.S. on Friday (November 16, 2012)

The Show Must Go On? David Letterman Props Up Entertainment Industry During Hurricane Sandy

David Letterman Jimmy Fallon Jimmy Kimmel Stephen Colbert Jon Stewart The XX Cat Power Grimes Rufus Wainwright The National Keira Knightley Russell Crowe Will Smith

The mayor of New York, Michael Bloomberg has been making sure that the city's residents were fully prepared for Hurricane Sandy, which hit New York last night. And whilst the majority of New York citizens paid heed, TV presenter David Letterman decided to pay heed instead to that age-old motto from the world of entertainment. "the show must go on!"

According to MTV, Letterman wasn't going to let a minor detail like the biggest storms to ever hit the USA stop him from filming one of his late night chat shows. He did, however, film the episode of The Late Show With David Letterman without the presence of his usual live audience. He may have been prepared to brave the elements to get the show filmed but he wasn't about to let the general public endanger themselves in the process. The same applied to Jimmy Fallon's show, Late Night With Jimmy Fallon.

Other shows weren't so lucky. Jimmy Kimmel was forced to cancel one of his tapings in Brooklyn, announcing on Twitter "Though it pains us to do it, JKL from Brooklyn tonight is cancelled. I'm disappointed too, but we want you to be safe." Over at Comedy Central, however, the laughter stopped for the night. Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart both cancelled the filming for their shows.

Will Karl Lagerfeld Design Keira Knightley's Wedding Dress

Keira Knightley Karl Lagerfeld Shock Machine Claudia Schiffer Uma Thurman Kanye West Tilda Swinton Yoko Ono Sarah Jessica Parker

Keira Knightley hit the town in support of fashion powerhouse and personal friend Karl Lagerfeld as he unveiled Chanel's The Little Black Jacket exhibition in London on Thursday night (October 11, 2012).

Although not in a black jacket herself, the 27 year-old screen siren did keep up with the colour requirements by wearing a black brocade dress with a black handbag to go with it. The event itself was in aid of a book of the same name being released, which features celebrity models wearing the iconic fashion item. The book, a joint project between Lagerfeld and Vogue editor Carine Roitfeld, is a reinterpretation of one of Chanel's most iconic fashion items: the black jacket.

A few of the celebs that make an appearance include Claudia Schiffer, Uma Thurman, Kanye West, Tilda Swinton, Baptiste Giabiconi, Yoko Ono and Sarah Jessica Parker.

Anna Karenina Review

Excellent

Tolstoy's iconic novel may have been filmed several times, but you've never seen a version like this. Clever writer Tom Stoppard and visually whizzy director Joe Wright combine talents with this ambitious film, which sets all of the action in a theatre that expands and shifts into a variety of settings.
Yes, it's rather strange, but it's also drop-dead gorgeous.

Knightley reteams with Pride & Prejudice and Atonement director Wright to deliver another solid performance as Anna, an aristocrat in 1870s St Petersburg who is married to the achingly nice establishment gent Alexei (Law) but falls under the spell of the bland but sexy young heartbreaker Vronsky (Taylor-Johnson). And when she gets pregnant, she has to make a very difficult decision. The central theme is that these people are characters in a play dictated to them by their restrictive Russian society, so they have little choice but head toward tragedy.

Fortunately, there's a parallel plot about a wealthy farmer (Gleeson) who rejects so-called civilised society to stay in touch with the earth. He pursues the smart, young Kitty (Vikander), also entranced with Vronsky but beginning to become disgusted with so-called civilised culture. The film includes a rather huge number of characters, including Anna's womanising brother (Macfadyen) and his longsuffering wife (a particularly excellent Macdonald). And Wright and Stoppard effortlessly let everyone swirl around each other in a huge pool of emotion.

Although this pool often feels frozen over, as the feelings are pretty icy. So it's good to have open-hearted performances by Macdonald and Gleeson to hold our interest. Knightley is excellent, although we never understand why Anna does anything she does (which is the whole point). But perhaps the most impressive thing about this film is its astoundingly beautiful design: the sets, costumes, photography and music are sumptuous and lush, never fussy but always adding to the intensity of each scene. Look for it to deservedly hoover up Oscar nominations across the board.

Seeking A Friend For The End Of The World Review

Excellent
There's a whiff of wilful quirkiness about this apocalyptic comedy-drama, but as the brittle humour quietly transforms into something remarkably emotional, the film gets under our skin in ways we never expect.

With an apocalyptic asteroid strike due in three weeks, Dodge (Carell) wonders why he's still going to work at his dull insurance firm. Then he runs into Penny (Knightley), distraught because she's broken up with her boyfriend (Brody). Dodge wants to revisit his childhood sweetheart, while Penny wants to see her parents in Britain. And Dodge knows someone with a plane, so they team up. Along the road, they get help from a trucker (Peterson) and Penny's survivalist ex (Luke). But with the world ending, their priorities begin to shift.

Anna Karenina is the young wife of senior statesman Alexei Karenin. Theirs was more of a marriage of convenience rather than love and soon Anna's eyes begin to wander elsewhere as her desire for romance becomes ever more intense. She meets Count Vronsky, a handsome cavalry officer with whom she enters into a passionate adulterous affair. When people find out about their involvement, Anna's honour is crushed in the eyes of the Russian noble men and women and she is forced to make a choice; to leave her loveless marriage and family and lose all honour and dignity, or end her affair with her possessive lover and be potentially forgiven.

A Dangerous Method Review

Very Good
Cronenberg's brainy approach makes this film fascinating but demanding as it traces the birth of psychoanalysis through the relationship and rivalry between Sigmund Freud and Carl Jung. The film radiates intelligence through clever direction and strong performances.

In 1904 Zurich, Jung (Fassbender) tests Freud's theoretical "talking cure" on manic patient Sabina (Knightley). And it works, revealing Sabina's own skills as a potential shrink. Two years later, Jung travels to Vienna to meet Freud (Mortensen), and they start a working friendship. But when Freud refers an outspoken patient (Cassel), Jung starts to question his morality. As a result, he starts an affair with Sabina, which is much hotter than his comfortable marriage to Emma (Gadon). But this causes him to question Freud's theories, leading to a clash of the titans.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: At World's End Review

Good
An honest-to-God, brawling, hooting, big ball of popcorn spectacle of a movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World's End fully embraces its ludicrous sense of summer season overkill without succumbing to the bloated tedium that afflicted its disappointing predecessor Dead Man's Chest. Clocking in at just under three hours, it's definitely longer than necessary, but given the number of unresolved plot strands that the last film left strewn about like so much tangled rigging, it's actually amazing the filmmakers are able to tie everything up quite as nicely as they do.

Starting with its unlikely origin as an amusement park ride, the Pirates series quickly mushroomed into a sort of meta-pirate film, a vast and whirligig universe unto itself that drew in every possible nautical cliché and legend possible. Thus the first film concentrated on yo-ho-ho-ing, rum-drinking, and general pirate-y scalawaggery. The second roped in Davy Jones and The Flying Dutchman -- not to mention an excess of secondary characters and familial drama. For the third (but not necessarily last, given the teaser it ends with) entry, the bursting-at-the-seams script tosses in a raging maelstrom, an actual trip to Davy Jones' Locker, and even the sea goddess Calypso. Dead Man's Chest showed that more is not always better, with excess just leading to more excess and a general sense of lethargy -- they were just setting us up for the conclusion and marking time until then. At World's End, however, shows that Hollywood excess, when combined with the right combination of actors and an occasionally smart script, can work out quite nicely, thank you very much.

Domino Review

Bad
The opening text of Domino informs the viewer that the film is based on a true story "sort of." It should also inform the viewer that it makes sense, entertains, and maintains focus on its main character "sort of." What it does far more consistently is annoy, disappoint, and remind the viewer of far better films they could be spending their time watching.

The story, very loosely based on the exploits of female bounty hunter Domino Harvey (Keira Knightley), follows our heroine as she grows dissatisfied with her socialite upbringing and embraces the darker side of law enforcement. Her mentor on this journey is legendary bounty hunter Ed Mosbey (Mickey Rourke), assisted by pseudo-comic relief Choco (Edgar Ramirez). That she meets these gentlemen as they try to scam hundreds of dollars off of would-be bounty hunters (including herself) doesn't dissuade her from trusting them with her new life.

Love Actually Review

Very Good
I can only presume that the British calendar is so uniquely screwy that it allows for a Christmas movie to open a week after Halloween. Or maybe Love Actually is just in a universe of its own... one in which the prime minister is inaugurated in November and where an adverb can be used to modify a noun.

But a little oddness is forgivable: Directing a movie is a strange place for Richard Curtis, who's written umpteen Brit-friendly movies and TV shows over the years but hasn't directed one, until now.

King Arthur Review

Good
It seemed doomed to fail. Schlock-master Jerry Bruckheimer had thrown a talented but mildly-experienced director at a costume picture, launching it in the heart of the hyper-competitive summer movie season. Surprise! The super-fun Pirates of Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl grossed $300 million, polished Johnny Depp's star, and introduced the world to barely-legal corset goddess Keira Knightley.

Fast forward 12 months. Bruckheimer brings back the costumes, the swordplay, another talented but mildly-experienced director, and his discovery Knightley, this time in a leather S&M get-up. Add the writer of Gladiator. Can the formula work again?

King Arthur Review

Bad

According to the studio advertising campaign, the 2004 mega-budget version of "King Arthur" is "the untold true story that inspired the legend" -- you know, the factual version in which Arthur is a brooding bore, Lancelot has hip, runway-model facial hair and Guinevere is a half-naked post-feminist warrior hottie.

Borrowing superficially from recent theories about Camelot's origins only as a jumping off point -- producer Jerry "Armageddon" Bruckheimer cares about cool explosions and box office receipts, not historical accuracy -- this commercialized concoction draws its regal hero (played by rising star Clive Owen) as an idealistic, half-Anglo high commander in the Roman army, which is in the midst of abandoning Britannia as a protectorate.

Arthur and his knights (Sarmatian soldiers reluctantly bound to imperial service) take it upon themselves to defend the now unguarded territory against invading hoards of barbarian Saxons from the north. But first they're sent on one last suicidal mission into Saxon territory to rescue a rich Roman family living there for no explored reason.

Pirates Of The Caribbean: The Curse Of The Black Pearl Review

Very Good

The very idea of a movie based on a Disneyland ride -- let alone such a movie produced by Jerry "Kaboom" Bruckheimer, whose standards of quality extend only to the explosions that substituted for plot in 15 years of imbecilic summer blockbusters -- had me dreading "Pirates of the Caribbean: The Curse of the Black Pearl" since it was first announced almost two years ago.

But I'm now here to eat every bad word I said in anticipation of this matinee marvel. Exhilarating from beginning to end, vivid with atmosphere, cleverly cliché-mocking, and blessed with two top-notch, over-the-top performances by Johnny Depp and Geoffrey Rush (I should have trusted these two intrepid actors), it may well be one of the most enjoyable pirate escapades of all time.

Festooned in a three-point hat over gypsy hair, a billowy shirt, kohl-blackened eyes and gold-capped teeth that he thrusts forward as he speaks, Depp stars as Capt. Jack Sparrow, a dirty, flirty, disarmingly dishonest swashbuckler of subtly dubious sexuality (a covert pirate flick custom since the silent era) who sails into a 17th century Caribbean colonial port atop the mast of a rapidly sinking sailboat.
