Rancic made a racial slur whilst presenting Fashion Police Oscars special earlier this year. Rancic was commenting on Zendaya Coleman's hair, which was in dreadlocks.

"Like I feel like she, she smells like patchouli oil. Or weed. Yeah, maybe weed," Rancic said at the time.

Rancic apologised soon afterwards but the damage was already done and Zendaya issued a statement in which she described Rancic's comments as "ignorant slurs". A number of other celebrities were quick to jump to Zendaya's defence including Rancic's co-host, Kelly Osbourne

"I read her statement and I was shocked. I made [the joke] as a reference to the hippie culture. It was a bohemian-chic reference, not about race, nor would it ever be. It was horrifying to have my name in a headline with words I have never been associated with in my life," Rancic said in an interview with People

Rancic further claimed the misunderstanding had arisen because of issues with editing as her peace signs, signifying the associations with hippiedom, had not made the final cut. She further claimed no one in the studio had any complaints about her comments at the time.

Her comments went viral after the Oscars special aired and Rancic immediately felt the repercussions. Terrifyingly, she began to receive death threats.

"I started very quickly getting death threats," Rancic explained. "People were sending me pictures of the barrel of a gun saying, 'I'm going to kill your family.' It was awful."

Fashion Police has been struggling since the death of its hosting matriarch, Joan Rivers. The show has recently lost two of its hosts - Kelly Clarkson and Kathy Griffin - and the alleged reasons for their departures have certainly cast Fashion Police in a poor light with fans. Rancic is remaining with the show which is on hiatus until September 2015. The hosting positions are, as yet, vacant.
