Kendall and Kylie Jenner Have Written A Book. Critics Say They Shouldn't Have Bothered

Kim Kardashian’s little sisters Kendall and Kylie Jenner have written a book and no it’s not an autobiography or a style guide, actually it doesn't contain any pictures at all, because it’s a real novel. Of course, the Jenner sisters did have a little help with the writing as manager Elizabeth Killmond-Roman and author Maya Sloan are quietly listed as having ‘worked’ on the book, but still, this is Kendall and Kylie’s debut literary outing. Rebels: City Of Indra: The Story Of Lex And Livia (yes that’s the real title) is set for release on June 10th and already the sisters are out on the promotional trail. But what have reviewers got to say about the teens first literary endeavour? Spoiler alert, it’s not very kind.

Rebels: City Of Indra: The Story Of Lex And Livia, is looking to tap into that Divergent reading section of the young adult market who just love dystopian futures. To quote the blurb, “In a world of the far future, the great city of Indra has two faces: a beautiful paradise floating high in the sky, and a nightmare world of poverty carved into tunnels beneath the surface of the earth. Kendall and Kylie Jenner, the youngest sisters in the Kardashian dynasty, have written a gripping tale of air, fire, and a bond of blood.” Huh? In the world dreamed up by the Jenners, people are only allowed to have one child (which leads to an unexpected birth control sub plot) and they also cannot be short, because standing at 5 foot 2 would leave someone “utterly devastated.”

Early reviews have so far been less than positive and on Amazon, the book currently holds a one and a half star average rating. One angry reader headlines their review “DO NOT BUY THIS!! COMPLETE GARBAGE!!!!!!!!”, while another writes, “the Jenner sisters, have no idea how to write or structure a book.” However one Amazon reader thought to give the book five stars writing, “Are you tired of cute hipster guys or girls hitting on you in the coffee shop while you try and have a quiet read with an almond milk soy cap frap? Me too! This book acts like an EMP on Sentinels, it shuts that s*** down.” Hang on, that one maybe shouldn’t count.

Over on Goodreads, the novel fares slightly better with a 2.47 star rating, however the reviews are much of the same. “It is as awful as you'd expect it to be—the prose is stiff and dry. The characters aren't fleshed out and trying to get inside their minds is impossible,” writes one reader. There’s also many negative comparisons made between the novel and older sister Kim’s sex tape, apparently the latter had a better plot.

Ok, so funny internet reviews aside, what do the critics think of Kendall and Kylie’s work? Well, writing in the New York Daily News, Sherryl Connelly picks the novel apart, focusing on the assumed parallels with the Jenner sisters own lives as lived on their reality show. While taking us through the novel bit by bit Connelly says of the ending, “As stirring climaxes go, we’ll stick to Kim’s sex tape.” Damn, perhaps it’s time to dig up the reviews of that tape instead.

Rebels: City Of Indra: The Story Of Lex And Livia, reading the title is probably enough

Poor Kendall and Kylie, living in the shadow of Kim Kardashian must be pretty hard, so it’s no surprise they’d want to try their hand at some different. But sadly girls, it seems novel writing is not for you. May we suggest Kendall, you stick to modelling and Kylie you can continue to have half green hair, then we can be happy and not have to read lousy reviews.
