Prankster Kevin Hart

Kevin Hart

In the animated action comedy Captain Underpants, Kevin Hart voices a 9-year-old named George, who with his best friend hypnotises the school principal into believing that he's a superhero. Unsurprisingly, Hart admits that he was a prankster as a child. "I was pretty much always in trouble," he says, "because I didn't want to stop laughing. I loved laughing in school and making other people laugh. And in school that's the worst thing you can do in the class is be the funny guy, because then nobody is focusing. Everybody is passing around letters or pulling chairs from underneath the teacher. Or was that just me?"

Kevin Hart plays George Beard in Captain Underpants

Hart likes that the film's focus is on the friendship between George and his buddy Harold (voiced by Thomas Middleditch). "I loved the relationship the characters had," he says. "Because in school, the close friends you have are very important - that friend that you open up to, that you are talking to on a different level on a day-to-day basis. You're confiding at a young age. That's dope to me. I think that's something kids can relate to. I know I could! I had a friend named Kylo when I was coming up and you couldn't separate us. At school, I wasn't in trouble without him and he wasn't in trouble without me."

Kevin Hart Went Method For The Secret Life Of Pets

Kevin Hart

Hart's character leads a gang of stray pets living in the sewers of New York City. And the actor-comic jokes that he went method for the role. "As a thespian nothing is easy," he says. "You have to go to a dark place with anything you do. Being a fan of Daniel Day Lewis, you have to invest in that character. So I was a rabbit for almost two years. A bunny suit, carrots, carrot juice. I went and spent a lot of time with some bunnies. I only ate lettuce for like seven months before filming this movie!"

He goes on to comment on getting the character's physicality. "I didn't want to use my fingers," he continues, "because I was like, 'It's no fair, bunnies don't have fingers!' So I just wore mittens for like that seven-month period. I made a thumping noise because bunnies thump. And I just hopped a lot. I hopped a whole lot. And when it came time to film, I had the mindset of a bunny. And then I realized that I was in a sound booth, and I didn't have to use any of that s**t!"

Central Intelligence Review

Very Good

After teaming up with Will Ferrell for Get Hard and Ice Cube for two Ride Along movies, Kevin Hart takes on The Rock in this entertaining action-comedy bromance. They make a great couple, as Dwayne Johnson's bulk cleverly contrasts with Hart's tightly wound intensity. Even more enjoyable is that they've essentially swapped roles, with Hart as the straight guy opposite Johnson's awkward goofball.

They play characters who knew each other in high school, when Calvin (Hart) was the king of the campus, captain of every sports team, star of every theatre production, top student and boyfriend of the sexiest cheerleader (Danielle Nicolet), whom he went on to marry. On the other hand, Bob (Johnson) was a badly bullied, overweight kid, who now turns up in town for their 20th reunion as a beefy muscleman. Clearly a little unhinged, Bob is also a rogue CIA operative, hunted by his boss Pam (Amy Ryan) for killing his partner (Aaron Paul) and other crimes he insists he didn't commit. So he ropes Calvin in to help clear his name, but Calvin finds this situation so insane that he's not sure who to believe.

While all of this plays out in a blissfully silly way, there's also a bit of an edge to the movie as it explores the issue of bullying with some gentle nuance that includes racism, sexism and homophobia. So even when it's rude or mindlessly corny, the movie is making a point. That said, the message might have been more convincing without the over-the-top violence that fills all of the action sequences. Thankfully, that never drowns out the terrific chemistry between Johnson and Hart, who bounce hilariously off each other as two men who have been emasculated in very different ways and need to prove themselves. This vulnerability makes both of them easy to identify with, especially as they play with their usual on-screen personas.

The Secret Life Of Pets Review

Very Good

From the team behind Despicable Me and Minions, this high-energy adventure makes up for its rather simplistic story by filling the screen with lively characters, silly dialog and colourful animation. There's nothing terribly distinctive about the movie, as most of the gags feel recycled and everything bounces across the surface without generating any resonance either in the humour or emotions. But it's a lot of fun while it lasts.

In a cosy Manhattan apartment, the happy rescue dog Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) lives with his owner Katie (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Ellie Kemper). The moment she steps out of the door on the way to work, he's already bored and waiting for her to come home. So he hangs out with the other pets in the neighbourhood, including lovelorn pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) and food-obsessed cat Chloe (Lake Bell). Then Katie brings home another stray, the gigantic brown furball Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who immediately starts challenging Max's alpha-dog status. As war breaks out between them, they find themselves stranded in the city, caught up with a sewer-dwelling gang of abandoned pets led by the adorable but intense bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart). Meanwhile, Gidget and Chloe recruit some help to find them, including a grumpy hawk (Albert Brooks) and an ageing basset hound (Dana Carvey).

The plot basically consists of a series of chaotic chase sequences that build up to a climactic scene straight out of a Die Hard movie. Each character and plot element is over-constructed, which eliminates any sense of honest emotion or loose interaction, but the characters are likeable simply because they're so ridiculous. The animators use a lot of colour and a tactile variety of furry textures. And the actors have a lot of fun with the characters. Hart is, of course, the scene-stealer as the fast-talking kingpin who uses his cuteness as a weapon. And while C.K. and Stonestreet are endearing as the story's protagonists, it's Slate and Bell who win over the audience in the funniest, most complex roles.

Kevin Hart Ice Cube

When they made the first Ride Along two years ago, Kevin Hart and Ice Cube found an unusual bond as collaborators. "Literally there wasn't a day that we stepped on set with any bad energy," Hart says. "It was a positive vibe: I'm making his day better, he's making my day better. You're really looking at a partnership, two guys who leave all egos at the door and say, 'I got you.' It's a give and take relationship and I think it shows in the movie."

"With the first film, we made what we set out to do, which was a quality buddy action cop comedy with a hint of romance. So we thought since we had such a great template why not build on it? Why not come back and gain more success off of what we did the first time? And also there's such a good group of people involved - from the studio to the director, producers and actors."

Will Ferrell Defends 'Get Hard' Against Accusations Of Racism And Homophobia

Will Ferrell Kevin Hart

On the eve of the release of his latest comedy Get Hard, actor Will Ferrell has been defending the movie against accusations of racism and homophobia, arguing that the controversial jokes are intended to lampoon America’s elite.

Get Hard’s plot concerns a wealthy businessman, played by Ferrell, who hires a black employee (Kevin Hart) in order to help him mentally prepare for a prison stretch. Many critics have pulled it up as being offensive in its themes, and have used some of the film’s jokes as illustration of that.

22 Jump Street and How To Train Your Dragon 2 have topped the US weekend box office. The two newcomers gained, respectively, first and second position knocking, The Fault In Our Stars off the top spot. The latter film has plummeted to fifth two weeks after its release. Maleficent remains in the top three, having being pushed out of second position by HTTYD2. But after two weeks, the Disney re-envisioning of the Sleeping Beauty fairytale is doing fairly well.

22 Jump Street, which stars Channing Tatum and Jonah Hill as two undercover cops in college, has received positive reviews from critics and has evidently won over audiences with the reprisal of childish antics and easy laughs we encountered in the original, 21 Jump Street. It's the perfect film for the summer months and with the new competition released this weekend (20th June), may not be out of the box office top ten for some time. So what is on offer for this weekend?

'Ride Along' Has No Ambition, So Just Laugh And Watch Things Blowing Up

Ice Cube Kevin Hart

There's very little ambition apparent on-screen in the buddy action-comedy Ride Along, with its lazy direction and slack script. But the filmmakers clearly knew they had lightning in a bottle in co-star Kevin Hart, so they let him run free with his fast-paced comical banter. This merely required Ice Cube to look short-tempered. And in America the film topped the box office for three weeks in January and February.

The studio will be hoping for a similar bump as the film rolls out across Europe over the next month. And after the demands of those awards season movies, audiences might just be in the mood for a movie they can watch without engaging their brains.

Robert De Niro and Sylvester Stallone are no strangers to putting on their boxing gloves for the sake of the movies and in their latest film, Grudge Match, the two screen icons are putting their respective ages aside to step into the ring once again. The film comes with a lot of promise, starring Alan Arkin, Kevin Hart and Kim Basinger alongside the two screen titans, yet sadly the overall response to the film from critics has been very underwhelming.

Kevin Hart Arrested, Admits To DUI Charge

Kevin Hart

We wonder, as Kevin Hart’s arrested for DUI: Is there some kind of unspoken rites of passage ritual that we are unaware of, in which all famous people are required to get themselves arrested for driving under the influence? We’ve lost count of the number of times that we have written stories such as this over recent months. According to TMZ, the Scary Movie 3 star was arrested early Sunday morning when he nearly slammed his vehicle into a gas tanker whilst he was clocking 90mph on a freeway.

California Highway Patrol confirmed that their officers spotted Hart, in his black Mercedes, on the 101 freeway at about 4:30am. He was reportedly “driving erratic” and “almost collided with a gas tanker truck.” When he was pulled over by cops, he failed to perform the regulation ‘field sobriety tests’ and showed “objective signs of intoxication.” Just before 6am, Hart was booked into jail for misdemeanour DUI and posted a $5,000 bond.

He was videoed leaving the jail and held his hands up to the offence. When the cameraman asked how he was feeling he said “oh, good, good.” He also admitted that he was also arrested for ‘resisting arrest,’ as well as the DUI. When the details of the police report were read back out to him, Hart was visibly frowning but said “I got pulled over last night, he gave me the whole test… I said, I’m drunk, I get it, do what you gotta do. My girl was with me, I said just make sure she gets home safe.” Asked about the ‘resisting arrest’ part of the charge, Hart explained “officer tried to put handcuffs on my wrists… I said wait, let me take my watch off and he said ‘you’re resisting arrest…. I laughed at it though… I was actually drunk so there’s no arguing that.”

The Five-Year Engagement Review

Excellent
Segel and Stoller repeat their duties from 2008's Forgetting Sarah Marshall and come up with another hilarious romantic-comedy for grown-ups. It's corny, but it keeps us laughing all the way through while stirring in some genuinely sweet moments.

A year after they met, San Francisco chef Tom (Segel) proposes to his girlfriend Violet (Blunt), but their excited wedding plans are interrupted when Violet gets a post-doc position at the University of Michigan. So they postpone the wedding and head to the snowy Midwest. There, Violet's career soars while Tom has little to do beyond making sandwiches in a deli and going hunting with his new friends. And before they can set a new date, Violet's sister (Brie) marries and has two kids with Tom's best pal (Pratt).

Soul Plane Review

OK
Airplane! is the quintessential masterpiece of all airborne spoof films, and while numerous films have tried to replicate the original formula, very few have succeeded. Soul Plane is an inspired effort that updates many of the same gags, but it unfortunately does not have enough frequent-flyer miles to make the full round-trip.

Nashawn Wade (Kevin Hart), along with his buddy Muggsy (Method Man), uses the $100 million Wade wins in a court settlement against the airline that kills his dog, to buy an airline of their very own. Wade calls it NWA - no, not Northwest Airlines - Nashawn Wade Airlines (clever, huh?). It features one departure daily from the 3-1-0 (Los Angeles) to the 2-1-2 (New York) from the brand new Malcolm X terminal at LAX, where a brother can find bargains at a 99 cents store, play some half-court hoops, and eat some fried chicken before a flight.
