The immensely popular House of Cards kicked off its second season on Netflix today, prompting people to commence binging on the tense political drama. Kevin Spacey, who leads the show with a commanding performance, has predicted a 12 season run. Bit ambitious, don’t you think?

“12 years, 12 seasons,” said Spacey to Digital Spy when they asked him about the future of the show. It’s more realistic that the 37 seasons he joked about at one point, but another 10 years of House of Cards isn’t really… on the cards, so to speak. Then again, we’d love to be proved wrong.

It’s not only the lead that thinks the Netflix original drama has legs. Kate Mara, who plays Frank’s erstwhile mistress and political journalist Zoe Barns, also believes the show has a long way to go yet. “They could go on with the story as long as they want. There’s a lot to play with,” she said.

For Beau Willimon, the show’s creator and writer, thinking about the future doesn’t enter his brainspace when he’s working on it.

“The way I approach each season is, let’s not keep any great ideas in reserve – let’s use them all. By the time it’s the end of the season, we have no more ideas – in some ways, no idea how to keep the show going,” he said.

"We might have some notions of where it can go. [But] treat every season as though it’s your last, don’t hold anything back,’ he added to TV Guide.

House of Cards Season 2 is available to stream now on Netflix, which makes for a nice Valentines evening doesn’t it? Season 3 has already been commissioned.
