Spacey will play Clarence Darrow, a larger than life player in 19th Century American law
Kevin Spacey is going above and beyond his responsibilities as Creative Director at the Old Vic Theatre by starring in a one-man play as part of the famous venue’s in-the-round season.
Kevin Spacey is thrilled to be heading back to the stage
The legendary actor said he was “thrilled” to be returning to the stage. The play, which is directed by The Old Vic’s associate director David W Rintels, sees Spacey play the titular character, Clarence Darrow, and will run from May 28 to June 15 in the CQS Space.
“I am thrilled to be returning to The Old Vic stage, for the first time performing in the round – such an exciting transformation of our Old Vic space for actors and audiences alike,” Spacey said.
Darrow, whom Spacey has played before, was a ground-breaking lawyer in 19th century America. The play sees the characters of Darrow regale audiences with his life stories, such as the infamous Scopes ‘Monkey’ and ‘Thrill Killers’ trials, which cemented his standing as a courtroom colossus and hero of civil rights.
"As I celebrate ten years at the helm of this very special theatre it feels great to be returning to the character of Clarence Darrow, whom I played both onstage in Inherit the Wind and 22 years ago in the PBS film Darrow, directed by one of my House of Cards collaborators, John Coles,’” added Spacey.
“With Other Desert Cities about to open and this new raft of productions announced to follow, this is a diverse programme of classic and new work which we are very proud to present to theatregoers, as we close our tenth season of work and open our eleventh this September.
Elsewhere in the season, Kristin Scott Thomas will star in Sophocles’ Electra, in a new version by Frank McGuinness.
