The new season is a prequel of the first, which starred Martin Freeman, the excellent Billy Bob Thornton, Allison Tolman and Colin Hanks. Season 2 is set in1979 in Sioux Falls, South Dakota, though the younger Lou Solverson - played by Keith Carradine in the first season - is yet to be cast.

"He though he left the war behind, but he came back and here it is, it's domestic" Noah Hawley said at TCA about cop Lou. The show will also feature Solverson's Betsy, their four-year-old daughter Molly and fellow officer Ben Schmidt.

It's perhaps surprising that Dunst is turning to television though it's not unfamiliar territory for the actress, who appeared in ER in the 1990s, as well as a few episodes of Sisters and The Outer Limits. Recently, she appeared on IFC's Portlandia.

In addition to his role in Breaking Bad, Plemons has also appeared in Friday Night Lights and in HBO's Olive Kitteridge.

Joel and Ethan Coen will return as executive producers for season two, while Noah Hawley is once again showrunner and writer.
