Disney's 'Frozen' Soundtrack Tops Billboard Album Chart With Strongest Sales Week

Kristen Bell

Disney's 'Frozen' has quickly become one the most successful animation movies of all-time, reaching record numbers not just at the cinema, but in the music industry as well, with the movie's soundtrack finds itself topping the charts once again.

What's So Great About Disney's 'Frozen' Soundtrack?

Idina Menzel Kristen Bell

The question is really, what’s not good about the Frozen soundtrack? We’ve been playing it repeatedly on Spotify since the movie first came out, but why has it struck such a chord with kids and adults alike? We thought we’d talk you through why we think the Frozen songs may make up the greatest Disney soundtrack of all time. A big claim, but we reckon we can back it up.

Frozen Disney Soundtrack Frozen has become the highest grossing animated film of all time

Possibly the catchiest song from the Frozen soundtrack, “Do You Want To Build A Snowman”, sung by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel AKA Elsa and Anna, hears Anna sadly serenade her big sister in the hope that she’ll come out and play with her. It sets the tone perfectly for the rest of the film, showing how sad little Anna is about her sister distancing herself. It’s the love between these two sisters that is the important theme in the animated film, rather than the usual Prince/Princess dynamic. This is important in itself, it’s a little dated these days to expect the typical boys meet girl, boy saves girl, storyline.  Frozen steers away from this, it’s a wholly more modern concept that any of the previous Disney movies.

The Long, Cold Story Behind Disney's 'Frozen'

Idina Menzel Kristen Bell

Disney’s icy adventure ‘Frozen’ can now call itself the highest grossing animated film of all time after surpassing ‘Toy Story 3’ by taking over $1.072 billion at the world wide box office. That’s quite an achievement for Disney, but what makes it all the more remarkable is the real story of how ‘Frozen’ made it to the big screen. A journey which took nearly 70 years until a seemingly small idea was mentioned.

Frozen has overtaken Toy Story 3Frozen has overtaken Toy Story 3 to becoming the highest grossing animated film

The origins of 'Frozen’ lie in the Hans Christian Andersen tale ‘The Snow Queen’, a story which had been the subject of a major Disney headache for nearly 70 years at the time of ‘Frozen’s’ inception. Back in 1943 Walt Disney saw the potential of the Danish author’s stories, which included 'The Little Mermaid’, ‘The Emperor’s New Clothes’ and ‘The Snow Queen’. The original plan was for Walt to collaborate with Samuel Goldwyn to produce a biographical piece on Andersen and incorporate some of his famous works into the story, using Disney animation. Eventually the project fell through and Goldwyn went on to do his own movie on Andersen in 1952, leaving the animation part out. Despite the setback, Disney never lost sight of the potential of Andersen’s stories, most notably ‘The Snow Queen’.

'Frozen' Is The Biggest Animated Movie Of All Time: Step Aside 'Toy Story 3'

Idina Menzel Kristen Bell Josh Gad

Frozen has finally overtaken the sales of Toy Story 3 to become the highest grossing animated movie of all time. The Oscar-winning musical comedy dominated the box office over the winter period. The last big push for the film's release came as it opened in Japan this weekend - one of the world's largest and most influential film markets. The hugely popular Disney flick hit has since reached $1.072 billion in box office revenue, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

Disney Frozen
'Frozen' Has Finally Surpassed 'Toy Story 3' To Become The Biggest Animated Movie Of All Time.

Since Frozen's release late in 2013, it has made $398.4 million in the USA alone with an extra $674 million coming from other markets around the world. The movie's popularity was boosted by its chart-smashing soundtrack, strong presence on social media and awards success at high profile ceremonies including the Oscars, the BAFTAs and the Golden Globes.

Veronica Mars Review

Very Good

Funded by fans, this follow-up to the cult TV show feels a lot like an extended reunion episode. But even those unfamiliar with the series will enjoy the twisty plot and smart dialog, plus the sparky Kristen Bell in the title role. And while there are rather too many characters for a stand-alone movie, they all feed nicely into the central mystery.

After escaping from the run-down seaside town of Neptune, California, nine years ago, Veronica (Bell) has become a New York lawyer. But just as she's on the verge of landing her first proper job, an old friend is murdered back home, waking her investigatory instincts. The worst of it is that her ex Logan (Dohring) is the prime suspect, so Veronica heads home to help him clear his name. Her private eye dad (Colantoni) just rolls his eyes when she slips back into her old mystery-solving role, working with her pals Mac, Weevil and Wallace (Majorino, Capra and Daggs). But three other classmates - Gia, Cobb and Dick (Ritter, Starr and Hansen) - are also involved. And the fact that she keeps putting off her return to New York annoys her boyfriend Piz (Lowell).

The most refreshing thing about this film is the way filmmaker Thomas refuses to play by the usual rules. Bell may have been offered a dream job, but we fully understand why she's blowing it off to help her friends. And the whodunit plot is just intriguing enough to hold our interest: we don't really care who the villain really is, but it's fun to watch Veronica dig through the clues and challenge every level of authority. And the script gleefully stirs in red herrings, side-plots and lots of suspicious-looking characters.

For those who care about films in the slightest, South by Southwest is the place to be this week. The conference, which runs March 7th through March 16th in Austin, Texas, is the place for enthusiasts to see the latest films, get album previews and generally have tons of fun. So, four days into SXSW, what are the highlights?

The VM cast was out in full force at SXSW.

First of all, there was Seth Rogen and Zac Efron’s Neighbors, which pits Rogen against Efron in a battle for dominance over a suburban street. In this comedy, directed by Nicholas Stoller from a script by Andrew J. Cohen and Brendan O’Brien, Rogen plays one half of a newly married couple, who are just settling into their cozy suburban nest. Efron and his band of frat boys, however, are there to ruin everything. According to THR, Neighbors got big laughs at its Paramount Theater premiere, so it might be one to look out for later in the year.

'Frozen' Joins The $1 Billion Club, While Disney Joins The Oscars Club

Kristen Bell Disney

The folks at Disney will be pretty happy with Frozen’s performance; not only did the film clinch a first Animated Picture Oscar on Sunday night (March 2, 2014), but it surpassed the $1 billion mark in the global box office standings, and with the DVD yet to be released and a Japanese market to exploit, the story doesn’t finish there.

Disney's Frozen

According to Disney, Frozen is the 18th all-time highest grossing movie and their 2nd best performer after Toy Story 3. Not bad for a film that reportedly cost $150m to make and market. That’s a tidy profit for sure. Other Disney movies that have reached $1 billion globally include The Avengers, Iron Man 3, the second and fourth Pirates of the Caribbean films, and Alice in Wonderland.

Is 'Walking With Dinosaurs' The Best Bet For Kids At The Cinema This Christmas?

Kristen Bell Josh Gad

Things are a bit thin at the cinema for kids this Christmas. The only new release for the holidays is the 3D adventure Walking With Dinosaurs, which is oddly aimed at very, very young viewers and will drive their parents crazy with its inane dialogue. Read our full review of the movie here.

Walking with Dinosaurs
Disney's 'Frozen' Is A Safe Bet for Christmas

Much more appealing, Disney's Frozen still sits near the top of the box office chart even though it's been out for several weeks now. So everyone's seen that by now - probably two or three times - but it's worth planning a return visit this coming weekend (it's definitely a better bet than those dinosaurs). And in a pinch, the still-lingering Free Birds at least offers some mindless laughter.

Frozen Review

Excellent

Disney learns a lesson from Pixar's Brave, giving these orphaned princesses some feisty purpose that doesn't depend on a man. Everything else about this movie is fairly formulaic, including the requisite goofy sidekick character. But the frosty animation adds a stately, dramatic tone that's picked up by Broadway-style songs and just a hint of moral complexity in the story, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen's story The Snow Queen.

With her ability to freeze anything at a touch, young Queen Elsa (voiced by Menzel) has spent her life hidden away in the castle. No one can know her secret, including her restless little sister Anna (Bell), who meets her dream man in Hans (Fontana) on the day of Elsa's coronation. But Elsa's startled reaction to this news triggers an ice age in the kingdom, which sends Elsa fleeing to hide in the mountains. So Anna decides to track her down. She enlists help from local delivery boy Kristoff (Groff) and his pet reindeer, and as they head into the hills they encounter one of Elsa's newest creations: a singing, dancing, scatterbrained snowman named Olaf (Gad).

The winter wonderland setting gives the animators a lot to work with, and the imagery is spectacular. We actually shiver at the gleaming ice and snowy landscapes, which are so detailed that they make us want to see the film again. The characters are also sharply rendered, although they're designed without much subtlety, including the usual Disney physicality in the girls' big-eyed Barbie-like figures. But the plot keeps us off balance by, for example, giving Anna two eligible men to choose between. And also by making Elsa so internally conflicted about her unwanted powers.

Fire Or Ice? Disney’s 'Frozen' Set To Challenge The Hunger Games' Box Office Dominance

Kristen Bell Jennifer Lawrence Disney

The Hunger Games has enjoyed a lucrative stint atop the box office mountain, breaking records and – pretty much – living up to its expectations both critically and fiscally. Some Girl(s) Review

Very Good

Neil LaBute adapts his bracingly astute play into a series of scenes that make us question how men and women ever come together to make a relationship work. The central idea is that we hurt each other even when we don't mean to, and through a series of face-offs between a man and his ex-girlfriends, the film leaves us wondering what we might have done to our own partners along the way.

At the centre is a writer (Brody) in his 30s, who wants to clear away his relational baggage before he gets married. He flies first to Seattle to meet his school girlfriend Sam (Morrison). She's now married with kids, and he wants to talk about their break-up. "You ended it," she corrects him. And he finds his memories equally unreliable as he visits Tyler (Maestro) in Chicago, Lindsay (Watson) in Boston, Reggie (Kazan) back in Seattle again and Bobbi (Bell) in Los Angeles. While zig-zagging across America he begins to realise that he was always the problem.

As the scenes unfold, Brody's unnamed character reveals himself as weak, shallow and self-absorbed, but also relentlessly charming. it's a brave, transparent performance that takes on resonance as he begins to understand that he's flawed and, even worse, ordinary. Opposite him, the women are all variations on a fantasy: the good girl, the sex pot, the experienced older woman, the flirty little sister of his best friend, the brainy hottie. They're superbly well-played by these actresses; Watson's piercing honesty is the stand-out, while Kazan's role is the most haunting.

TV host Jimmy Kimmel must have had the shock of his life to find two ladies in veils and white dresses were in attendance at his wedding, narrowly mistaking his fiancé Molly McNearney for mischievous guest and Precious actress Gabourey Sidibe, according to Yahoo! OMG. Kimmel and his girlfriend of two years MollyMcNearney married in a romantic Californian ceremony, packed with A-list guests, including Matt Damon, his wife Luciana, Emily Blunt, Jennifer Garner, Ben Affleck, Ellen Degeneres, Portia DeRossi, Kristen Bell, Dax Shepard, Stanley Tucci and John Krasinski who all turned up the exclusive Ojai event.

Kimmel and McNearney hadn't planned on another bride turning up to their nuptials but this didn't stop Gabourey Sidibe, clad in white veil and bridal train, from making an entrance to remember when she stepped out of her black limo with a girlfriend as her 'bridesmaid' to help her with the flowing white gown. The Jimmy Kimmel Live host and his new wife Molly - the head writer on his show - showed their sense of humour, welcoming their prankster guest with laughter as both clearly enjoyed the stunt. So as not to hog the limelight from beautiful bride Molly, Sidibe changed into a tight red dress and flat white shoes after the surprise had rippled through the wedding party.

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Are PETA's 2013 Sexiest Vegetarians

In an accolade of meat avoidance, Kristen Bell and fiancé Dax Shepard have been crowned animal rights activist PETA's sexiest celebrity vegetarians, in a campaign to spread the word about the benefits of cutting out meat. 32 year-old Bell, who's best known for her titular role in the Veronica Mars television series, revealed that she's been veggie since she was a teen: "I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with-dogs and cats, for example-from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat." This isn't the first time she's been recognised by PETA for her dietary choices - in 2006 she was selected as their 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' and now it seems she's lifting the crown again with her fiancé and father of her child, Dax Shepard.

Shepard spoke of the benefits of a vegan diet, after being encouraged to follow Bell's example by documentary Forks Over Knives, which advocates a plant-based diet: "I have fewer body aches, my skin looks better, I'm never starving, and I never need to ride the couch feeling completely full and disgusting" he explained to Playboy magazine when he was following a strict no-meat diet. However, it seems that it's only Bell who can truly feel proud of the title:"I'm really flattered to be named 'Sexiest Vegetarian' with [email protected], but sadly I can't accept in good conscience because I eat chicken," Shepard tweeted. In a shock for PETA, who had been using the publicity as part of their campaign to encourage more people to be vegetarian, Dax added: "I was vegan for a year, but that ended 6 months ago. I aspire to be more like [email protected], but I'm not there yet," he said in a follow-up tweet. Oops.

'Frozen' is the new Disney animation based on a much-loved tale that is due to hit the UK this winter (most appropriately) starring Kristen Bell.

Fairytales are definitely becoming popular again with some of the world's favourites being transferred to stunning, high-energy and often grisly live action flicks, among them being 'Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters', 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and not to mention the TV series 'Once Upon a Time' which is now in its third season. However, Disney has brought the delight back to children and reverted to what they are known for with their (albeit vague) rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen' in an animated adventure entitled 'Frozen'. Starring Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Broadway sensation Idina Menzel, it tells the story of Anna's quest to undo her sister Elsa's power over the kingdom of Arendelle, which she has cursed into eternal winter, accompanied by her friend Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and a snowman called Olaf.
