Chips Review

Terrible

It's clear from the very start that this movie has little to do with the 1977-1983 beloved hit TV series. Firstly, the film ignores the capitalisation that would make sense of the title. And the main characters, while they have familiar names, are completely different people. So fans of the show will be justifiably angry that it has been merely referenced to make a half-hearted mash-up of The Hangover and Fast & Furious. Which might not be a bad idea if the gross-out comedy was funny and the action was even remotely thrilling.

In this version, Poncharello is the undercover name assigned to a Miami FBI agent (Michael Pena) who is sent to Los Angeles to investigate a string of armoured car robberies that might involve dirty cops. He is partnered with officer Jon Baker (Dax Shepard) riding motorcycles with the California Highway Patrol (they're CHiPs, not Chips). Jon is a former hotshot off-road motorbike champ who has broken every bone in his body and has only joined the police to try to win back his estranged, monstrous wife (Kristen Bell). But he's such a high-energy idiot that he's starting the job on probation. As their case develops, it's instantly clear that the mastermind is the villainous officer Kurtz (Vincent D'Onofrio). And their investigation is complicated by the arrival of Ponch's FBI boss (Isiah Whitlock Jr.) and partner (Adam Brody).

The lazy script never tries to crank up any real mystery or tension in the plot. Instead, the film is just a series of smutty jokes and incoherent stunt sequences, plus running gags that never reach a punchline. All of this is infused with relentless sexism, as the camera leers shamelessly at every woman. And the laddish misogyny is accompanied by constant homophobia, which is addressed in the dialogue in a feeble attempt to undercut the baldfaced bigotry. This makes all of the characters resolutely unlikeable. Ponch and Jon are such self-absorbed jerks that it's inconceivable that they would ever be allowed to be policemen.

The Boss Review

Bad

Melissa McCarthy brings another of her improvisational alter-egos to the big screen with this energetic comedy. The first cause for pause comes because this is a reteaming with her filmmaker husband Ben Falcone, with whom she made the bizarrely unfunny Tammy, as opposed to the filmmaker Paul Feig who directed her to box office triumph with Spy and The Heat and an Oscar nomination in Bridesmaids. Yes, there's a significance difference.

This time she plays hugely popular financial guru Michelle Darnell, whose stardom ends abruptly when she is sent to prison for four months for insider trading. When she's released, everyone she stepped on as she rose to the top turns their back on her, and her nemesis/ex Renault (Peter Dinklage) is still determined to get revenge. The only person who will talk to her is former assistant Claire (Kristen Bell), so Michelle moves in with her family. Unable to restart her business, she also takes over the Dandelion Scout troup of Claire's daughter Rachel (Ella Anderson), pushing the girls to take aggressive measures to sell their cookies.

As always, McCarthy throws herself into the role, creating a vivid character who indulges in a lot of outrageously silly slapstick. As with Tammy, the humour centres more on abusive interaction and humiliation than actual wit. McCarthy and Falcone strain to get laughs from physical wackiness rather than anything based on the character, so the movie only ever feels mildly amusing thanks to its high energy. But there's nothing engaging about Michelle, and it's only in a few cute-warm scenes with the terrific Bell that the film springs to anything resembling life. Thankfully, her scenes with the likeable Tyler Labine (as a potential boyfriend) have a loose humour to them. And Dinklage is surprisingly amusing as the sputtering cartoonish villain, while Kathy Bates generates a few sparks as Michelle's sassy mentor.

‘Once Upon A Time’ Casts ‘Frozen’ Anna And Kristoff: What About Elsa?

Scott Michael Foster Kristen Bell Josh Gad Disney

Once Upon A Time has cast Elizabeth Lail and Scott Michael Foster as Princess Anna and Kristoff in the ABC series' fourth season Frozen spin-off plotline. The events of the season will reportedly pick up where the Oscar-winning Disney musical left off, meaning ice cutter Kristoff will be seen adjusting to life at the castle.

Californication star Foster and newcomer Lail have both been cast in the lead roles, leaving only Princess Elsa still to be cast. Whether the team has a star in mind but casting news has been delayed to eke out fan antipipation a little longer or whether creators are still deliberating over the actress best placed to play the winter Princess is not clear.

Series creators Adam Horowitz and Eddy Kitsis said that it had been hard for them to to get the rights to the Frozen characters as Disney didn't contact them with an offer. "We fell in love with the movie 'Frozen' when we saw it," Horowitz told TVLine.

Kristen Bell Idina Menzel

We think everyone can agree when we say that Disney’s Frozen has been pretty successful. Since its release in 2013 it’s earned around $1.2 billion and is the fifth highest grossing film of all time, not to mention the highest-grossing animated film and Disney’s highest-grossing release.

The figures speak for themselves but what’s more important is how loved the characters have become in such a short space of time. Sisters Elsa, voiced by Idina Menzel, and Anna, by Kristen Bell, are the heart of the film, and have enthralled little girls (and grown ones) and offered up a new mould for the typical Disney princess - a more believable and relatable one.

In news you didn’t know you needed until right now, Disney has confirmed the development of two new Pixar flicks. One is a third Cars movie, but before you cringe and ash “Why?”, the other project is a sequel to The Incredibles! So said Walt Disney CEO Bob Iger during a sort of “State of the Disney Union” address on Tuesday, during Disney’s annual meeting of shareholders, in Portland, Ore.

jJ Abrams is bringing back Luke, Leia and Han... maybe.

There was also some Star Wars info casually dropped into the conversation. Iger revealed that the next Star Wars movie will pick up 30 years after the events in 1983's Return of the Jedi. This means that the speculation about Mark Hamill, Harrison Ford and Carrie Fisher returning to play aging versions of their original characters might have been spot on or at least it works within the time frame. Iger was careful not to reveal too much, however and only hinted at the possibility.

Frozen Review

Excellent

Disney learns a lesson from Pixar's Brave, giving these orphaned princesses some feisty purpose that doesn't depend on a man. Everything else about this movie is fairly formulaic, including the requisite goofy sidekick character. But the frosty animation adds a stately, dramatic tone that's picked up by Broadway-style songs and just a hint of moral complexity in the story, which is based on Hans Christian Andersen's story The Snow Queen.

With her ability to freeze anything at a touch, young Queen Elsa (voiced by Menzel) has spent her life hidden away in the castle. No one can know her secret, including her restless little sister Anna (Bell), who meets her dream man in Hans (Fontana) on the day of Elsa's coronation. But Elsa's startled reaction to this news triggers an ice age in the kingdom, which sends Elsa fleeing to hide in the mountains. So Anna decides to track her down. She enlists help from local delivery boy Kristoff (Groff) and his pet reindeer, and as they head into the hills they encounter one of Elsa's newest creations: a singing, dancing, scatterbrained snowman named Olaf (Gad).

The winter wonderland setting gives the animators a lot to work with, and the imagery is spectacular. We actually shiver at the gleaming ice and snowy landscapes, which are so detailed that they make us want to see the film again. The characters are also sharply rendered, although they're designed without much subtlety, including the usual Disney physicality in the girls' big-eyed Barbie-like figures. But the plot keeps us off balance by, for example, giving Anna two eligible men to choose between. And also by making Elsa so internally conflicted about her unwanted powers.

The Hunger Games has enjoyed a lucrative stint atop the box office mountain, breaking records and – pretty much – living up to its expectations both critically and fiscally. Some Girl(s) Review

Very Good

Neil LaBute adapts his bracingly astute play into a series of scenes that make us question how men and women ever come together to make a relationship work. The central idea is that we hurt each other even when we don't mean to, and through a series of face-offs between a man and his ex-girlfriends, the film leaves us wondering what we might have done to our own partners along the way.

At the centre is a writer (Brody) in his 30s, who wants to clear away his relational baggage before he gets married. He flies first to Seattle to meet his school girlfriend Sam (Morrison). She's now married with kids, and he wants to talk about their break-up. "You ended it," she corrects him. And he finds his memories equally unreliable as he visits Tyler (Maestro) in Chicago, Lindsay (Watson) in Boston, Reggie (Kazan) back in Seattle again and Bobbi (Bell) in Los Angeles. While zig-zagging across America he begins to realise that he was always the problem.

As the scenes unfold, Brody's unnamed character reveals himself as weak, shallow and self-absorbed, but also relentlessly charming. it's a brave, transparent performance that takes on resonance as he begins to understand that he's flawed and, even worse, ordinary. Opposite him, the women are all variations on a fantasy: the good girl, the sex pot, the experienced older woman, the flirty little sister of his best friend, the brainy hottie. They're superbly well-played by these actresses; Watson's piercing honesty is the stand-out, while Kazan's role is the most haunting.

The Jimmy Kimmel Live host and his new wife Molly - the head writer on his show - showed their sense of humour, welcoming their prankster guest with laughter as both clearly enjoyed the stunt. So as not to hog the limelight from beautiful bride Molly, Sidibe changed into a tight red dress and flat white shoes after the surprise had rippled through the wedding party.

Kristen Bell & Dax Shepard Are PETA's 2013 Sexiest Vegetarians

Kristen Bell Bill Clinton Anne Hathaway Sir Paul McCartney

In an accolade of meat avoidance, Kristen Bell and fiancé Dax Shepard have been crowned animal rights activist PETA's sexiest celebrity vegetarians, in a campaign to spread the word about the benefits of cutting out meat. 32 year-old Bell, who's best known for her titular role in the Veronica Mars television series, revealed that she's been veggie since she was a teen: "I had a hard time disassociating the animals I cuddled with-dogs and cats, for example-from the animals on my plate, and I never really cared for the taste of meat." This isn't the first time she's been recognised by PETA for her dietary choices - in 2006 she was selected as their 'World's Sexiest Vegetarian' and now it seems she's lifting the crown again with her fiancé and father of her child, Dax Shepard.

The Sexy Faces Of Vegetarianism: Dax Shepard [L] And Kristen Bell [R] Crowned By PETA.

Shepard spoke of the benefits of a vegan diet, after being encouraged to follow Bell's example by documentary Forks Over Knives, which advocates a plant-based diet: "I have fewer body aches, my skin looks better, I'm never starving, and I never need to ride the couch feeling completely full and disgusting" he explained to Playboy magazine when he was following a strict no-meat diet. However, it seems that it's only Bell who can truly feel proud of the title:"I'm really flattered to be named 'Sexiest Vegetarian' with ?@IMKristenBell, but sadly I can't accept in good conscience because I eat chicken," Shepard tweeted. In a shock for PETA, who had been using the publicity as part of their campaign to encourage more people to be vegetarian, Dax added: "I was vegan for a year, but that ended 6 months ago. I aspire to be more like ?@IMKristenBell, but I'm not there yet," he said in a follow-up tweet. Oops.

'Frozen' Sees Disney Doing What They Do Best In The Latest Fairytale Movie Adventure [Trailer And Pictures]

Disney Kristen Bell Josh Gad Idina Menzel Jennifer Lee Chris Buck

Olaf meets Sven in 'Frozen'Olaf meets Sven in 'Frozen'

'Frozen' is the new Disney animation based on a much-loved tale that is due to hit the UK this winter (most appropriately) starring Kristen Bell.

Fairytales are definitely becoming popular again with some of the world's favourites being transferred to stunning, high-energy and often grisly live action flicks, among them being 'Jack the Giant Slayer', 'Hansel & Gretel: Witch Hunters', 'Snow White and the Huntsman' and not to mention the TV series 'Once Upon a Time' which is now in its third season. However, Disney has brought the delight back to children and reverted to what they are known for with their (albeit vague) rendition of Hans Christian Andersen's 'The Snow Queen' in an animated adventure entitled 'Frozen'. Starring Kristen Bell, Josh Gad and Broadway sensation Idina Menzel, it tells the story of Anna's quest to undo her sister Elsa's power over the kingdom of Arendelle, which she has cursed into eternal winter, accompanied by her friend Kristoff, his reindeer Sven and a snowman called Olaf.

Anna is a young girl determined to save the world as she sets out with her best friend Kristoff, a burly mountain dweller, and his friendly pet reindeer Sven on a mission to restore warmth to the kingdom of Arendelle. Her wicked sister, Elsa, also known as the Snow Queen, has cursed the realm to suffer a never-ending winter, forcing Anna and Kristoff to brave freezing conditions unlike any they've ever experienced as they set out to stop Elsa. But the bitter winds and endless snow fields become the least of their problems as they encounter creatures such as trolls along the way. They also meet the nasally challenged snowman Olaf, who joins them on their trip after becoming confusedly acquainted with Kristoff. Will Anna save the frosty kingdom? Or will Elsa's power prove much too strong?

Why Can't Zach Braff Stump Up $2 Million Of His Own Cash For 'Wish I Was Here?'

Zach Braff Kristen Bell

Zach Braff looks to have secured the full $2 million to make his Garden State follow-up Wish I Was Here, though the actor and director has spoken on the need for crowd-funding websites like Kickstarter to get movies made in the current climate. Braff is one of the most recognisable television actors in the U.S having spent years as the star of Scrubs, though he is quick to play down his financial successes. Thousands of crowd-funding users had donated their cash to get Braff's new project off the ground, though some commentators on Twitter have accused the actor of cynically leveraging free money whilst having to adhere to his creative demands.

Users on the social aggregating website Reddit wondered why the star of the Scrubs couldn't put up the $2 million himself, though Braff responded "People seem to think I have Oprah Winfrey money. I've done well in my career, but I am not sitting on $22 million. I'm doing this so that one negative audience comment in a test screening won't force me to change the end of my movie." Braff also suggested he isn't asking something for nothing from his fans - the Kickstarter website is based on benefits for those who donate and those funding Wish I Was Here will receive invites to screenings and after-parties. $10,000 donors will receive a speaking role in his film. "Even the most entry-level backer will get access to an online magazine about the making of the film. If David Fincher, who I'm a huge fan of, had a video blog of the making of one of his movies, I would have been the first one there."

The Kickstarter success comes just weeks after a Veronica Mars movie attained $5.7 million on the crowd-funding website. Kristen Bell will star in the film, with production scheduled to begin this summer.

Record Breaking 'Veronica Mars' Kickstarter Project Reaches Last Day

Kristen Bell

Just in case you were desperate to add to the Veronica Mars movie Kickstarter project that series creator Rob Thomas began a few weeks ago, then you better hurry, because today is the last day that donations will be accepted (April 12, 2013).

Of course, you don’t need to worry whether your money makes a difference or not, because the project has already smashed the target needed for Thomas and the original show’s star Kristen Bell to begin work on the movie. In fact, it’s topped $5 million in pledges, a new Kickstarter record by an absolute street. USA Today reports that a delighted Bell posted a video to let the fans of Veronica Mars know of ongoing updates to the project. "We have the funds now to make a rockin' movie for you guys," she said, going on to call all those who pledged “the coolest group of fans anyone could ever hope to have. I've always known it, Rob's always known it, and now you guys proved it to the world."

Talking about the crowd funding project to Wired, Thomas commented "I’m not convinced that this will revolutionize how most movies get made, but I think there’s an opportunity now for projects that are similar to ours – that have some bit of public support behind it before they launch on Kickstarter… For something like Veronica Mars, where there’s a bit of a cult following and people are really emotionally invested in it, I do think this is a new avenue. There is no other way that this movie was going to get made.”

A Baby Girl Was The Easter Surprise For Kristen Bell And Dax Sheppard

Kristen Bell

It’s a baby girl for Kristen Bell and Dax Sheppard! The little one was born yesterday (March 29th) and, probably to the disappointment of VM fans everywhere, will not be named Veronica.

Instead, the couple have gone with the unusual baby girl name Lincoln Bell Sheppard. This is only the start if a big and busy year for Kristen Bell. Since the Kickstarter for the highly anticipated Veronica Mars movie succeeded in such a big way earlier this month, shooting for the film should start later this year. And with the little tot at home, Bell and Sheppard will certainly have a lot on their respective plates.

For now though, the couple are just enjoying the euphoria of new parents. The couple announced that they were having a baby back in November and the excitement has been mounting ever since then. And, in typical fashion, they couldn’t miss taking a few cracks at the situation. On his twitter, Sheppard (38) wrote: "She has mom's beauty and dad's obsession with breasts," while Bell (32) went with a similarly themed: "new roomate poops her pants and doesn't pay rent ... basically @daxshepard1 pre-sobriety." On a more serious note though, she tweeted at another fan that Lincoln was “kind of the best”. Isn’t that the cutest?

Veronica Mars Kickstarter Project Raises $2.5 Million

Kristen Bell

If you didn’t know who Veronica Mars was then then you’re sure has heck going to know about her now; that’s because a crowd-sourced project on donations website Kickstarter has already surpassed a staggering figure of $2 million set by the character and show’s creator Rob Thomas in order for him to make a movie.

Veronica Mars, which starred Kristen Bell in the main role, aired between 2004 and 2007 on UPN and CPW and won a number of awards as well as a host of acclaim from TV critics at the time. However, it’s popularity could only really be described as niche during its period on air. That hasn’t stopped Thomas from setting up a Kickstarter project in the hope he might be able to sway his main star to appear in a feature length of it. “Kristen and I met with the Warner Bros. brass, and they agreed to allow us to take this shot,” Thomas wrote in the campaign description. “They were extremely cool about it, as a matter of fact. Their reaction was, if you can show there’s enough fan interest to warrant a movie, we’re on board. So this is it. This is our shot.”

According to Crowdsourcing.org, the Kickstarter project has become the fastest to hit both $1 million and $2 million, and has also set the record for the most money taken in 24 hours, with $2.59 million. It’s currently sitting on a quite ridiculous $2.7 million plus, with 29 days still left to go. Among the highest perks for pledgers was the chance of a speaking role in the film, with one person gaining that for a pledge  of $10,000. Bargain if their career takes off after it we’re sure.

Veronica Mars Kickstarter "Kicks" Off The Prep For The Long Anticipated Movie

Kristen Bell Rob Thomas

Our favorite high school detective is headed for the big screen – that’s right, the Veronica Mars series is officially going to be turned into a feature film.

If you haven’t seen Veronica Mars, shame on you, go sit in the corner. But also, it is the story of a teenager with a traumatic past, who uses all of the skills she’s learned from her PI father to correct injustices around her school, full of privileged teenagers, while also trying to solve the mystery of her own assault. It’s good. Seriously, watch it.

With only three seasons of the show, fans have been pretty much begging for the cult series to be turned into a movie. The show’s creator Rob Thomas and star Kristen Bell have been dropping subtle hints that they would be on board for the project and earlier today, the rumour became a reality with the launch of a Kickstarter for the movie. At $2 million, this is by far the largest Kickstarter goal ever set, but it doesn’t seem unrealistic, with more than 7,000 backers having donated more than half a million to the cause already. That number keeps changing by the second as fans clamor to support the idea. Clearly, people really want to see the Veronica Mars film realized. Plus, the Kickstarter campaign does include some sweet perks for the backers, including a digital copy of the shooting script, signed posters and even a producer credit. And if that doesn’t stir your passions, there is also the campaign video, which is probably the cutest thing the cast have ever done.

Safety Not Guaranteed Review

Essential

With a low budget but a lot of imagination and talent, director Trevorrow and writer Connolly create a deceptively simple comedy that's one of the most entertaining films of the year. It's so cleverly written that every moment of the film is hugely engaging, and it's so perfectly played by its cast that we can't help but fall for the likeable, flawed characters.

Set in Washington state, the story centres on Darius (Plaza), a sardonic Seattle magazine intern whose life derailed when she was 14, after her mother's death. So her interest is piqued when she hears about a classified ad asking for an assistant on a time travel mission ("Bring your own weapons. Safety not guaranteed"). She accompanies arrogant journalist Jeff (Johnson) and fellow intern Arnau (Soni) to a seaside town to write up the story for the magazine, but once they track down the ad's author Kenneth (Duplass), nothing goes as expected.

Each of these three magazine reporters has a full-bodied story, expertly set within the larger investigation of whether Kenneth is nuts or not. All of these characters are caught between their past and the present, exploring who they once were, who they are and who they want to be, which makes them easy to identify with even as they do some amusingly silly things. And the filmmakers cleverly refuse to play into our expectations, keeping us guessing about where the movie is heading. So each scene bristles with possibility, and each twist and turn of the plot and side-plots is both thrilling and hilarious.

Movie 43 Trailer

If you were hoping for a romantic comedy with a harmless storyline, romance and inoffensive jokes, the here's a warning: read no further. 'Movie 43' is one of the most cringe-worthy and uncensored taboo-filled flicks to be released in the history of comedy. Here you will see several interlinked stories with characters' lives surrounding unusual proposals, interrupting blind kids' parties, bad parenting, teenage menstruation, a confused and slightly racist basketball coach, innovative business ideas and the kidnapping of a violent leprechaun. Once you see this movie it is unlikely you will find a subject that offends you ever again.

With twelve different comedy genius directors including Peter Farrelly ('Dumb & Dumber', 'There's Something About Mary', 'Shallow Hal'), Steve Carr ('Daddy Day Care', 'Dr Dolittle 2'), Steven Brill ('Little Nicky') and Brett Ratner ('Rush Hour') to name but a few and eight different writers, this jaw-droppingly crude and often obscene movie features a diverse star-studded cast, both British and American, who have banded together to shock you in the most hilarious ways you can think of. Whatever kind of comedy you're into, 'Movie 43' probably has something in it for everyone and it is set to hit the big screen on February 1st 2012.

Directed by : Elizabeth Banks, Steven Brill, Steve Carr, Rusty Cundieff, James Duffy, Griffin Dunne, Peter Farrelly, Patrik Forsberg, James Gunn, Bob Odenkirk, Brett Ratner, Jonathan van Tulleken

Kristen Bell Will At Last Appear On Gossip Girl For The Series Finale

Kristen Bell Gossip Girl

After five years as narrator of the hit CW show, Kristen Bell will finally be appearing on Gossip Girl in person during the upcoming season finale.

Whilst it is known that the voice of the 'Gossip Girl' herself will be appearing on the show, it is as yet unknown as to whether Bell will actually be playing the show's namesake when she steps out from behind the microphone and in front of the camera. Just to keep us guessing, both Warner Bros. TV and The CW have remained mum on the whole situation, so you'll have to tune in to find out. With that said, we do know for sure that the anonymous gossiper will be revealed in the finale, 'New York, I Love You XOXOX.'

Earlier today the Forgetting Sarah Marshall actress, who recently announced that she and her boyfriend, Dax Shepard, are expecting their first child together, took to Twitter to tell her fans about her final voice-over session, saying, "The saddest day I've had in a while...Last day on #gossipgirl Ill miss you, you snarky bitch!"

Kristen Bell And Dax Shepard Are Having A Baby!

Kristen Bell Dax Shepard

Despite having been together for 5 years and engaged for almost three, Kristen Bell and Dax Shepard still have no plans for getting married, and now the couple have announced that they are going to have a baby.

Clearly, Bell and Shepard want their child (or children) to grow up in a world of equal opportunity and equal rights, and they're planning on continuing their life of healthy living by vowing to remain vegan according to the Examiner. Dax Shepard has been playing a dad in the show 'Parenthood' for a while now, but with the little one on the way he's gearing up to take up the role for real. Neither of them are worried about having children before being married and The Herald Sun quotes the couple earlier this year. Bell said "We'll do it. We'll have some babies. It will be our gift to America." While Shepard said "We'll have them out of wedlock. We're not worried about that."

The couple created and starred in the low-budget movie 'Hit and Run' earlier this year but now their biggest plans revolve around their baby.

Hit & Run Review

Good

Audiences out for a bit of mindless fun will probably enjoy this raucous road movie, but only if they can look past comedy that relies on jokes about racism, sexism and homophobia. And if the characters are all paper-thin, at least the film is loose and enjoyably silly.

It centres on Charlie (Shepard), who lives in rural California with his girlfriend Annie (Bell). But when she's offered a job in Los Angeles, Charlie has to face up to his criminal past. He's currently in witness protection, and returning to L.A. is very dangerous. Still, he decides to take Annie to her job interview, while his protective agent (Arnold) follows close behind. But trouble is brewing because Annie's still-smitten ex (Rosenbaum) is also in hot pursuit, and when he figures out Charlie's secret, he gets in touch with the gang boss, Alex (Cooper), who wants him dead.

While the film looks whizzy and is packed with banter that sounds offensive, everything is pretty half-hearted. The dialog continually touches on sexuality and ethnicity in ways that are more lazy than inappropriate, and the discussions of serious issues like gender roles have no depth at all. This is a movie essentially made up of nothing but stereotypes. Bell and Cooper just about manage to give their characters personalities, but everyone else has essentially one note. Most of the men are mere chucklehead idiots, while the women are male fantasies.

Big Miracle Review

Very Good
A grounding in the real-life story makes this film much less sentimental than it looks. Strong characters, some surprisingly dark touches and a genuinely thrilling series of events helps to engage us right to the end.

In 1988 Barrow, at the top of Alaska, aspiring reporter Adam (Krasinski) stumbles across three whales trapped beneath the icecap. Unable to reach the open sea, there's just a tiny hole in the ice that lets them breathe. Adam's report goes viral, grabbing the attention of America's press as well as his Greenpeace-activist ex Rachel (Barrymore). And the rescue effort will require an L.A. journalist (Bell), military pilot (Mulroney), Inuit boy (Sweeney), whale expert (Nelson), oil baron (Danson), White House rep (Shaw), two chuckleheads from Minnesota (LeGros and Riggle) and the Russian Navy.

Big Miracle Trailer

News reporter Adam Carlson is based in a remote part of Alaska, in a town called Point Barrow. As a consequence, there usually is little to talk about in the way of local news. After one news report, which saw him explaining how food can take up to four plane journeys to arrive in town, his boss rings to comment about how 'thin' his stories are. That is, until Adam sees something extraordinary out to sea. It transpires that there are three California gray whales stuck under the ice near Point Barrow. Adam captures the incident on his camera and rings his boss to tell him of his findings.

Adam's report on the whales makes it onto the news, where he tells stunned viewers that the ice the whales are trapped under extends five miles to the ocean. No one is more stunned than Rachel Kramer, a Greenpeace activist and Adam's ex-girlfriend. She rings him up to announce that she will help him rescue the whales. Soon enough, Adam not only has the support of his ex but of the entire town as well, all doing what they can to make a path to the ocean through the ice. Adam and Rachel soon find themselves united under a common goal and they slowly start to fall back in love again.

Starring: John Krasinski, Drew Barrymore, Kristen Bell, Dermot Mulroney, Vinessa Shaw, Ted Danson, Stephen Root, Tim Blake Nelson, James LeGros, Rob Riggle, Andrew Daly, Bruce Altman, Gregory Jbara, Michael Gaston, Mark Ivanir and Jonathan Slavin

Burlesque Review

Very Good
It's difficult to imagine a more outrageously camp movie than this glittery romp, and fortunately there's a sense that the cast and crew understand this.

By never taking their ludicrous plot seriously, they've made a true guilty pleasure.

Fed up with dead-end Iowa, Ali (Aguilera) heads for Hollywood. Despite having no experience or training, she's sure she can make it as a singer-dancer. After a series of rejections, she stumbles upon the Burlesque Lounge on Sunset, run by jaded diva Tess (Cher) with the help of her long-suffering buddy Sean (Tucci). Ali charms sexy barman Jack (Gigandet) into a barmaid job, while keeping her sights on the stage. And she's also wooed by Marcus (Dane), a developer who's trying to buy the financially strapped club.

Pulse (2006) Review

Bad
Earlier in 2006, a killer videogame stalked teenagers in Stay Alive; Pulse ups the ante with ghostly wireless signals stalking college students. The latest J-horror remake never pitches itself over the top, refusing to pile on the jump-scares, fake-jump-scares, and the accompanying soundtrack blasts; instead, it takes a low-key approach... along the way becoming completely unconvincing and almost prodigiously unscary. Boring is the new ridiculous.

It's a shame, too, because computer-centric horror is usually a good bet for ridiculousness. Here, the computer stuff isn't detailed enough to really bug the geeks; they'll be too busy pointing out how the movie's screenplay could be improved, and how Kristen Bell takes one of the most disappointing baths in horror history.

The Cat Returns Review

Good
This rather simplistic entry into the feel-good anime genre comes from Kiroyuki Morita (last seen animating the raunchy Perfect Blue but also responsible for working on the kind-hearted Kiki's Delivery Service). The Cat Returns is Morita's first outing as director, and it's a fair, if ultimately unrealized experience.

The story involves young Haru (voiced for the States by Anne Hathaway), who rescues a helpless cat from an oncoming truck, only to find herself in the debt of a feline kingdom she formerly didn't know existed. Haru is awakened one night by a bizarre procession on her street: It's the king of the cats (Tim Curry), bearing gifts. Before she knows it, she's whisked into the world of the cats, where she is transformed into a half-cat/half-person, and is told she will be marrying the cat she saved, who turns out to be the cat prince.

Spartan Review

Extraordinary
What is the man behind such parlor-room films as The Winslow Boy and House of Games doing directing an explosive military thriller, complete with airdrops and sniper rifles? And starring Val Kilmer? Trust me: Give Spartan ten minutes, and you'll stop asking such stupid questions.

David Mamet's latest project is far from conventional fare, and ultimately that works in his favor. From the opening scene, where two soldiers pursue each other through a jungle, Mamet keeps us guessing. What kind of movie are we watching? Within about 10 minutes, the bones of the story are made clear: the president's daughter (Kristen Bell) has been kidnapped from her dorm room, and the Secret Service pulls out all the stops to get her back. That includes recruiting special operations soldier Robert Scott (Val Kilmer), an uncannily capable military man who's as intuitive with people and motives as he is skilled with weapons.
