In an unusually poetic box office match, "Catching Fire" has lost its lead to "Frozen".
After Frozen’s landslide (or should that be avalanche) success before the weekend, it should come as no surprise that the film has easily topped The Hunger Games: Catching Fire at the box office. After two weeks on top, Catching Fire was knocked over by the Disney animated feature, which raked in $31.6 million in weekend sales alone. Since its release on November 22, Frozen has earned $190.2 million, according to Rentrak.
Besides being very seasonally appropriate, Frozen also boasts beautiful animation.
Frozen is a re-imagining of the Hans Christian Andersen fairy tale The Snow Queen. The film, which tells the story of two estranged princesses in an icy kingdom, topped the box office in its second week of release, while Catching Fire fell behind with just $27 million earned in the Friday – Sunday period, according to Businessweek.
Meanwhile, the Panem revolution has been falling behind.
The icy adventure follows something of a tradition for Disney, who conquered the holiday box office with Tangled in 2010 and again with Wreck-It-Ralph in 2012. Frozen is also an apt successor to Tangled in terms of its story. The film centers on two princesses, Anna and Elsa. Elsa possesses magical powers over ice and snow, but has never been able to control them. When she accidentally plunges the kingdom of Arendelle into a perpetual winter and then escapes to an icy palace, her sister Anna has to find Elsa and help her control her destructive powers. Ana and Elsa are voiced by Kristen Bell and Idina Menzel, respectively. It also features the voices of Jonathan Groff (of Glee fame) and Josh Gad.
