The fans rallied to make this happen
It’s fair to say that the people behind Veronica Mars wouldn’t have seen this coming then they called a wrap on the final episode of the cult series seven years ago. But due to the power of the crowdsourcing format, Kickstarter, a Mars film is out in March, and a brand new trailer has hit the web.
Kristen Bell reprises her role as Veronica Mars
The trailer sees Mars – once again played by Kristen Bell - ‘out of the game’, working as a high-powered lawyer in the big city. She doesn’t investigate things anymore, but when a case affects her ex-boyfriend, Logan Echolls (played by James Dohring), she’s forced to spring into action.
The Kickstarter campaign that saw this movie propelled into tangibility included certain bonuses for financial backers. Exclusive gear, regular updates from the set, personal video greetings from the cast, red carpet premiere access and - for $10,000 - a small speaking role in the film saw the target hit and surpassed in no time at all.
“I’ve been fantasizing about this and had to tell myself, ‘Stop it, Rob, you’re being silly,’” said creator of the show Rob Thomas when the campaign hit $2m. “I knew Veronica Mars fans were cool, but I had no idea they could rally with such power,” Kristen added. “I will have a permanent blush on my face, feeling so lucky to be associated with this entire thing." Veronica Mars, the movie, hits theaters on March 14, and will be a fascinating insight into how crowd sourced movies fare at the box office. Will the extra media attention bestowed by the unique means of financing cause a higher gross? Or will it primarily be a superfan-only event? We’ll have to wait and see.
"When do you ever get a chance to open up a script seven years later and read a fantastic script with the guys you love, with Veronica?" Dohring told MTV News at Comic-Con. "You start feeling the emotions all over again. Nobody gets that chance, you know what I mean? And it was done by the fans and for the fans."
