Lady GaGa and U.S. show Dancing With The Stars were among the winners at the Gay & Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation (Glaad) Media Awards on Saturday (24Mar12).
The Poker Face hitmaker has long campaigned for equal rights and she was named the Outstanding Music Artist for her hit album Born This Way.
Dancing With the Stars, which Cher's transgender son Chaz Bono appeared on last year (11), was named Outstanding Reality Program at the New York prizegiving, which was hosted by Glee stars Cory Monteith and Naya Rivera.
The producers of new musical series Smash received the top honour, the Vito Russo Award, which is named after the gay activist.
Producers Neil Meron and Craig Zadan stepped onstage to accept the honour and Zadan declared being gay was "part of who I am, so it impacts the work that we do".
Meanwhile, Harvey Weinstein presented high school student Katy Butler with a special honour for her anti-bullying efforts.
Butler has been spearheading a campaign to convince censors at the Motion Picture Association of America (Mpaa) to lower the R-rating of Weinstein's upcoming documentary Bully to Pg-13, thereby allowing youngsters to see the film in theaters.
Other winners at the Glaad Media Awards included independent film Pariah (Outstanding Film In Limited Release), HBO's Cinema Verite (Best TV Movie Or Miniseries Award), and Oprah Winfrey (Best Talk Show Episode).
