"Lady GaGa Wears Gun Bra" is no more shocking than "Lady Gaga Wears Meat", but probably only because Lady Gaga has already worn meat, and also because Madonna also pulled out a toy gun on stage last year. Fake firearms are silly, yes, but no longer shocking. Always one to fire up conversation and to speak up for what's right, what is Gaga trying to say with her strange choice of attire?

The most obvious interpretation is a gender one: she has guns on her breasts, breasts are a sign of womanhood, womanhood is powerful, women are powerful, guns are also powerful = female gender empowerment. Why else would she wear it? E! questions whether her choice to wear something so controversial comes in the wake of the Newtown shooting in Connecticut, which apparently is sparking controversy about its level of propriety.

However, as many people have pointed out that bra has managed to find its way on stage many times and long before the shooting in Newtown had happened. While many people are calling for her to remove the statement piece during her performance out of 'respect' for the victims of Sandy Hook, that begs the question as to why the rest of the victims of gun crime in America (around 10,000 last year) don't ignite the same kind of debate, or deserve the same kind of respect. It seems truly a strange argument to ban Gaga from wearing false guns but not to develop some kind of working ban on the guns that actually kill people.
