With only a few weeks to go until the biggest movie premier of the year - 'Top Gun: Maverick', Lady GaGa releases the first track from it's soundtrack - 'Hold My Hand'. With Tom Cruise reprising his roll as United States Naval Aviator LT Pete "Maverick" Mitchell for the long awaited sequel to the 1986 Tony Scott blockbuster, excitement is reaching fever pitch as the 27th May premier date approaches.
The original Top Gun, a classic of 80's cinema, was one of many films produced by Don Simpson and Jerry Bruckheimer ('Flash dance'/'The Rock'/Con Air') but it is the one has had the most longevity. It was a perfect combination of casting, drama, romance, cinematography and action all brought together brilliantly by it's director Tony Scott ('Days Of Thunder'/'Man On Fire'/'Enemy Of The State'/'True Romance').
36 years later and we finally have it's follow-up, sadly without the first film's original director, Scott, who committed suicide in 2012. "After more than 30 years of service as one of the Navy's top aviators, Pete 'Maverick' Mitchell is where he belongs, pushing the envelope as a courageous test pilot and dodging the advancement in rank that would ground him. Training a detachment of graduates for a special assignment, Maverick must confront the ghosts of his past and his deepest fears, culminating in a mission that demands the ultimate sacrifice from those who choose to fly it" says the film's statement.
One of the key elements that contributed to the success of the original 'Top Gun' was it's outstanding soundtrack. The over blown power ballad and the cheesy romantic sing-a-long have never been bettered. 'Take My Breathe Away', just like 'My Heart Will Go On' from 'Titanic' years later, would come to help define the film and who doesn't love the bar scene with Tom and Kelly McGillis as he sings 'You've Lost That Lovin' Feelin''?
Gaga, doing her very best to recreate an 80's power ballad with a just enough contemporary spin, says that - "When I wrote this song ['Hold My Hand'] for Top Gun: Maverick, I didn’t even realise the multiple layers it spanned across the film’s heart, my own psyche, and the nature of the world we’ve been living in."
'Top Gun: Maverick' will be in movie theatres and cinemas from May 27th.
