Alice (Reese Witherspoon) is a 40-year-old single mother of two young daughters living in Los Angeles, newly separated from her husband (Michael Sheen). She's going through a crisis in her life, and is trying to fill the emptiness in her life with booze and the company of three young male filmmakers (Nat Wolff, Pico Alexander and Jon Rudnitsky) whom she invites to move in with her on her birthday to help them get their careers on track. Of course, that only serves to make her life more complicated when she starts developing feelings for one of them, a bond is created between all four of them and her husband does his best to let her know his feelings on the whole situation. On the other hand, her mother tries to convince her that her questionable decisions may not be the worst she's ever made.

The Secret Life Of Pets Review

Very Good

From the team behind Despicable Me and Minions, this high-energy adventure makes up for its rather simplistic story by filling the screen with lively characters, silly dialog and colourful animation. There's nothing terribly distinctive about the movie, as most of the gags feel recycled and everything bounces across the surface without generating any resonance either in the humour or emotions. But it's a lot of fun while it lasts.

In a cosy Manhattan apartment, the happy rescue dog Max (voiced by Louis C.K.) lives with his owner Katie (Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt's Ellie Kemper). The moment she steps out of the door on the way to work, he's already bored and waiting for her to come home. So he hangs out with the other pets in the neighbourhood, including lovelorn pomeranian Gidget (Jenny Slate) and food-obsessed cat Chloe (Lake Bell). Then Katie brings home another stray, the gigantic brown furball Duke (Eric Stonestreet), who immediately starts challenging Max's alpha-dog status. As war breaks out between them, they find themselves stranded in the city, caught up with a sewer-dwelling gang of abandoned pets led by the adorable but intense bunny Snowball (Kevin Hart). Meanwhile, Gidget and Chloe recruit some help to find them, including a grumpy hawk (Albert Brooks) and an ageing basset hound (Dana Carvey).

The plot basically consists of a series of chaotic chase sequences that build up to a climactic scene straight out of a Die Hard movie. Each character and plot element is over-constructed, which eliminates any sense of honest emotion or loose interaction, but the characters are likeable simply because they're so ridiculous. The animators use a lot of colour and a tactile variety of furry textures. And the actors have a lot of fun with the characters. Hart is, of course, the scene-stealer as the fast-talking kingpin who uses his cuteness as a weapon. And while C.K. and Stonestreet are endearing as the story's protagonists, it's Slate and Bell who win over the audience in the funniest, most complex roles.

Million Dollar Arm Review

Very Good

Based on a true story, this is one of those relentlessly uplifting Disney movies that mixes comedy and emotion to inspire and move the audience. Thankfully, it also has a very smart screenplay by Tom McCarthy (Win Win) that draws out some resonant themes while tackling cross-culture issues with wit and honesty. This makes it easy to identify with the sparky characters who are trying to reinvent themselves.

Sports manager JB (Jon Hamm) certainly needs a reinvention. He has lost all of his high-profile clients and now needs to find the next big thing. Perceived as washed-up, he has some difficulty convincing someone to fund his crazy plan to stage a talent competition in India to find baseball talent among the local cricket players. With the help of his easily distracted assistant Aash (Aasif Mandvi) and cantankerous ex-coach Ray (Alan Arkin), he narrows the candidates down to two potential stars: Rinku and Danesh (Life of Pi's Suraj Sharma and Slumdog Millionaire's Madhur Mittal). After JB brings them back to Los Angeles, along with over-eager interpreter Amit (Pitobash), renegade coach Tom (Bill Paxton) has to whip them into shape to see if they can attract interest from the big-league teams.

While the film continually threatens to indulge in smiley culture-clash slapstick, McCarthy's script continually grounds the action in the characters, who emerge as fully rounded people who are engagingly unpredictable. The cast is earthy and natural, anchored ably by Hamm as a likeable guy who remains self-absorbed even though he's desperate, and who takes a long time to learn his rather simple lesson. His chemistry with Lake Bell (as the plain-talking tenant in his pool house) is superbly messy. And ace scene-stealers Mandvi and Arkin bring plenty of comic relief to their hilarious roles.

'Million Dollar Arm' Released: A Home Run For Jon Hamm? [Trailer]

Jon Hamm Alan Arkin Lake Bell Bill Paxton Aasif Mandvi

Million Dollar Arm is released today in the USA, bringing Craig Gillespie's take on the remarkable true story of sports coach J.B. Bernstein to life with Mad Men's Jon Hamm in the driving seat alongside Alan Arkin, Bill Paxton, Aasif Mandvi and Lake Bell. It's easy to see why Hamm was cast as Bernstein, the sports agent and marketing wiz who devised a programme to inspire Indian cricket players to make the jump to baseball in the search for a news sports hero.

Jon Hamm Plays Sports Coach J.B. Bernstein In This Heart-Warming True Story Dramatisation.

"Sometimes a hard-hitting expose, sometimes a big-hearted crowdpleaser, "Million Dollar Arm" wants it both ways to be sure, but its instincts are mostly right on the money, as are its actors," says Variety. Scott Foundas is even-handed in his review, making sure to praise all those who make the movie such a solid watch, including "Gyula Pados' ace widescreen lensing," "jubilant wall-to-wall song score by Oscar-winning composer A.R. Rahman" and Hamm "who possesses a special talent for ferreting out the humanity in seemingly soulless corporate suits."

Lake Bell

Lake Bell and Scott Campbell are expecting their first child together and proudly stepped out to display the happy news last night at the Tribeca Film Festival. It was plain for all to see that the actress and her tattoo artist husband are about to become parents as 35 year-old Lake held her small bump in a figure hugging burgundy dress, looking genuinely overjoyed to share their exciting news.

Sports agent JB Bernstein was once incredibly successful in his field, but now there's a bunch of serious new sporting entrepreneurs in town that look to be about to make his job very difficult. With his agency under the threat of closure, he and his partner Ash need to start thinking long and hard about fresh new ideas that could rake in the dollars. While watching a cricket match on the box, JB devises a crazy idea to find America's next huge baseball star in India by setting up a talent show for the nation's finest young cricketers. The finalists of the show entitled 'Million Dollar Arm' are Rinku and Dinesh, who subsequently fly over to the US to begin training in the art of baseball. However, things are less easy than they first appeared and JB finds himself in deep water when it becomes clear just how different baseball and cricket are.

After filming a talent show called 'Million Dollar Arm', he brings winners Rinku and Dinesh over to the States to learn the art of baseball. Mr. Peabody & Sherman - Teaser Trailer

Mr. Peabody is doubtlessly the most intelligent and most accomplished dog on the planet, and undeniably outshines the human race too. However, despite his achievements, he is determined to maintain a normal life for his adopted human son Sherman by inviting round Penny a classmate of his with whom he wants Sherman to be friends. She has other ideas, however, and only shows interest when Sherman agrees to show her Mr. Peabody's WABAC - a time machine in which they travel into the past despite being expressly forbidden. When Peabody finds out, he realises that their actions have ripped a hole in the space-time continuum and they are forced to return to the past to re-write history and save the universe. Along the way they meet some of the biggest legends of history, including Leonardo Da Vinci and Sigmund Freud, who help them on their quest.

'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' is a brilliantly funny animated movie based on the characters from the 'The Rocky and Bullwinkle Show' in the sixties in the 'Peabody's Improbable History' segments. It has been directed by Rob Minkoff ('The Lion King', 'Stuart Little', 'The Haunted Mansion') and written by Ted Key ('Hazel', 'The Million Dollar Duck', 'Gus') and Craig Wright ('Dirty Sexy Money', 'Underemployed'). 'Mr. Peabody & Sherman' is set for release in the UK on February 7th 2014.

In A World... Review

After playing comical sidekicks in rom-coms like No Strings Attached and What Happens in Vegas, Lake Bell emerges as a rising-star filmmaker with the smartest, funniest comedy of the year. Winner of the screenwriting award at Sundance, this script is painfully hilarious, drawing on the characters' personalities to take us into a previously unseen side of the movie industry. It's also a rare Hollywood movie that refuses to shy away from anything.

We're talking about voiceover artists here, specifically those who provide the rumbling commentary for movie trailers. The late Don LaFountaine was the voice behind all of those iconic "In a world..." trailers, and now a studio wants to revive them for a new epic quadrilogy. The top contender for the job is Sam (Melamed), a veteran who decides to let his protege, the egotistical womaniser Gustav (Marino), have the job. Then Sam's voice-coach daughter Carol (Bell) throws her hat in the ring, which is unthinkable because a woman has never narrated this kind of trailer. She prepares for the audition with the help of a love-struck sound engineer (Martin), but is distracted by issues between her sister and brother-in-law (Watkins and Corddry) and the fact that her dad's new girlfriend (Holden) is younger than she is.

Bell juggles all of these plot strands brilliantly as a writer, director and actor, generously giving her costars the most riotously funny dialog while Carol pings around between them. And since we see everything through her eyes, she emerges as a hugely engaging woman who is smart, skilled and also likeably flawed. Every performance is natural and amusing, with the kind of astutely witty dialog actors can really sink their teeth into. And there are some uproarious cameos along the way, including Offerman as a wry colleague, Davis as a studio head, Longoria as a vocal client and Diaz as the star of a Hunger Games-style saga.

Kate Bosworth Weds Michael Polish In Montana, During Weekend Celebrations

Kate Bosworth Michael Polish Orlando Bloom Lake Bell

Kate Bosworth married Michael Polish on Saturday (31st August) at a ceremony in Montana. The couple have been dating since 2011. 30-year old Bosworth became engaged to 42-year-old Polish last August and Bosworth confirmed the news via Twitter in September. They became engaged whilst on holiday in South Korea, according to Us Weekly.

It seems it was love at first sight as Bosworth said, in an interview with Instyle UK, "I never even dated my husband-to-be, he said to me after just a few weeks before we were even together, 'I'm going to marry you.' He just knew'." In the same issue, Bosworth had promised that the ceremony was going to be anything but ordinary, although specific details have not, as yet, been discussed by guests. In the interview Bosworth said "I can give you one detail: it's not the norm and whisky will be involved."

Black Rock Review

First-time filmmaker Aselton creates one of the most assured thrillers in recent memory, throwing finely developed characters into a very nasty situation that makes us squirm in our seats. It's also a rare film that acknowledges how difficult it actually is to kill someone: no one dies as easily as they do in most Hollywood horror movies, and the psychological nastiness is even worse than the physical stuff.

The title refers to an isolated island off the coast of New England, where Sarah (Bosworth) is planning a reunion camping trip with her two childhood pals, Lou and Abby (Bell and Aselton). The problem is that Abby hasn't spoken to Lou for six years, following an unforgivable incident. So Sarah has to trick them into coming along, then convince them to bury the hatchet for a weekend on the island they used to visit as little girls. Just as they've reached a peaceful accord, they run into three cute young hunters (Bouvier, Paulson and Richardson). But after an evening of alcohol and flirting, things take a very dark turn, and the boys start hunting the girls through the woods. They may be armed, but these feisty women know their way round the island a lot better.

Even though the back-story is essentially very simple, it adds to the dynamic between these three women, creating characters we are interested in right from the start. And their dialog is smart and offhanded, bringing out lively humour, dark emotions and the tensions between these strong-minded women. Opposite them, the three ex-soldiers are also intriguing because they show signs of post-traumatic stress. So the girls know they will never give up looking for them: they can't just hide, they have to fight back if they want to survive.

'In A World'...Where Lake Bell Talks About Voices [Trailer]

Lake Bell Eva Longoria Fred Melamed Demetri Martin Michaela Watkins Rob Corddry Ken Marino Zooey Deschanel

Lake Bell revealed in an interview with Yahoo! Movies that she was trying to address more than an inequality in the film industry with her new movie In A World, if we subconsciously associate power and a sense of omnipotence (which is needed for narrating film trailers) with manliness, thus culturally its preferable for us to hear a man narrating. Or that "resonance" makes it "easier and more authoritative to hear".

Another reason for doing the film is Bell's own strident stance on the power of speech and intonation she uses the insipid use of "sexy baby talk" as an example emphasising the importance of using your voice as it "is such a profound tool for communication and how you are perceived".

That all sounds terribly deep and philosophical yet that's not how it comes across in the trailer with Bell showing off her vocal skills (the Russian Star Wars impression is something to look out for).

Carol is a successful vocal coach with an extraordinary talent for accents, even training the likes of Eva Longoria for acting roles. However, her one ambition remains practically unattainable - to become a voiceover star. With her father, a talented master of voiceovers himself, showing little confidence in her because of the fact that she is a woman along with her own struggle to sound foreboding and intimidating, Carol seems destined to coach people on accents for the rest of her career.  Can Carol coach herself to become one of very few voiceover legends, or will her own talent fail her at the last hurdle?

Black Rock Trailer

Abby, Lou and Sarah are three girlfriends who all need a break in their lives and what better than a girly vacation to an isolated island near Maine where they can relax, reconnect and generally have a great time. Things take an unexpected turn when three hunters appear near their campsite, but when Lou recognises one of them, Henry, as the brother of someone they went to school with, Abby invites him and his friends Derek and Alex to join them on their vacation. After too much alcohol, Abby starts to flirt heavily with Henry despite Sarah's reminders that she is in fact married. When the two of them find themselves alone, Abby rejects Henry's advances and he starts to get violent. Abby hits him with a rock to protect herself but inadvertently hurts him more than she meant to. When Derek and Alex discover what has happened, they set out to shoot the girls down in a vicious revenge mission while Abby, Lou and Sarah attempt to escape the island while doing whatever it takes to survive.

This killer thriller could be set to be a massive hit with the hunt and kill style subject matter always being a big favourite on the big screen. Directed by and starring Katie Aselton ('The Freebie') and written by Mark Duplass ('The Puffy Chair', 'Jeff, Who Lives at Home'), 'Black Rock' is recommended to all fans of 'Wilderness', 'Cabin in the Woods' and 'Severance' esque flicks and will be released on May 17th 2013.

Speakeasy Review

Here's something I didn't know: Those Project Greenlight people not only made the awful Stolen Summer during that first season. They also made the runner up, a movie called Speakeasy. This one Miramax couldn't be coaxed into releasing in theaters: It arrives on DVD three years later.

Now that the Greenlight formula is well established, it comes as no surprise to find Speakeasy falling right in line with the films we've seen before. It's basically a family drama, it has elements of a period piece scattered throughout, it's got a disabled person or two, and its screenplay eventually wraps around to where things began. Simple, small, and manipulative, this is what Project Greenlight has become all about: It's the Lifetime Network of the indie cinema movement.
