Lauryn Hill is officially a jail bird, as the rapper/singer has begun her three month stay behind bars for tax evasion charges. According to TMZ, Hill checked into the Federal Correctional Institution in Danbury on Monday (July 8) morning at approximately 11.15 a.m. EST, where she will serve out the entirety of her short stay in prison.

According to the report from TMZ, the former Fugees singer and rapper will be held in a minimum security facility where inmates are housed in army barrack-like buildings and are given a considerable amount of freedom compared to inmates at higher security prisons. Hill will be living among the general prison population and will not be given special, isolated treatment because of her celebrity status.

Last year, Hill pleaded guilty to three counts of tax evasion after failing to file her tax returns on earnings she made between 2005 to 2007, with the grand total reaching $1.8 million. Since her sentence was agreed on in court last year, Hill has received support from the likes of Stevie Wonder and Alicia Keys and she has even likened her struggle with the US tax system to slavery.

Hill faced a potential 36 month stay in prison, but it was reduced to three month followed by three months under house arrest as the singer had no previous convictions and is one of the sole providers and carers of her six children - five of which are fathered by Rohan Marley, Bob Marley's son. By the time her sentence was reached, Hill had already paid back the $970,000 in back taxes and penalties she owed.
