Last night’s GLAAD (Gay and Lesbian Alliance Against Defamation) awards were filled with top notch moments. Orange Is The New Black star Laverne Cox was presented with the Stephen F. Kolzak Award, which is given to a gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender member of the entertainment community.

Cox is one of the most promising new faces to emerge from Netflix's critically acclaimed Orange Is The New Black.

Cox is a well known transgender activist. On Orange Is the New Black, she plays Sophia Burset, a transwoman sent to prison for credit card fraud. She has been a regular presence at the GLAAD awards since 2009, when she won the award for Oustanding Reality Series for I Want to Work for Diddy. Cox was presented with her award by the ever lovely Ellen Page, who came out as gay at the Human Rights Campaign’s Time To Thrive Conference earlier this year.

Another notable GLAAD winner was Jennifer Lopez, who won for the Vanguard Award, which lauds efforts to increase visibility and understanding of the gay, lesbian, bisexual or transgender community. In addition to being an outspoken advocate for gay rights, Lopez serves as executive producer of the ABC Family series "The Fosters," which centers on a lesbian couple raising their children. "The Fosters" also won the award for outstanding drama series.
