Lena Dunham has slammed Justin Bieber’s brand new song ‘What Do You Mean?’, suggesting that the ambiguous lyrics in the track’s chorus are inadvertently promoting rape culture.

On Monday (August 31st), the day after Bieber performed part of the track during a medley of several tracks coming from his as-yet-untitled album at the MTV VMAs, she tweeted: “Let's do away with pop songs where a girl nods yes when she means no and vice versa, k?”

Dunham, the 29 year old creator of smash HBO series ‘Girls’, was making a reference to the song’s chorus, whose lyrics go “What do you mean? / When you nod your head yes / But you wanna say no / What do you mean?”

However, defenders of the new track have claimed that ‘What Do You Mean?’ is not about sexual consent but about wider general confusion in relationships and miscommunication of feelings. The track is produced by Skrillex, and is the first track to be released from his upcoming fourth studio album, believed to be scheduled for November.

Though the official video for the single starts with Bieber and a girl getting intimate in a bedroom, the rest of the song’s lyrics appear to be innocuous and fit in with themes of confusion – for example “You’re overprotective when I’m leaving / Trying to compromise but I can’t win.”

Prior to the song’s performance, Bieber had offered an explanation as to the song’s meaning in a radio interview with Ryan Seacrest. “Girls are often just flip-floppy. They say something and they mean something else. So… …what do you mean? I don’t really know, that’s why I’m asking.” For his part, he has not responded to Dunham’s critique.
