Lena Dunham, the Golden Globe-winning creator of HBO's Girls has been called the voice of her generation. A writer that tapped into the whole New York, twenty-something hipster thing better than anyone before her, but most importantly, a writer and actress who began representing a woman rarely seen before on mainstream American television.

Now, her journey from selling overpriced cashmere garments for $100 a day to becoming one of the most important writers of her generation is documented in Not That Kind of Girl, Dunham's debut memoir. It's the book that Random House paid a reported $3.7 million advance for and early critical reaction appears to suggest that it was worth every penny. Here's the best snippets from the reviews hitting the web.

"This is not, however, a foolproof how-to-be-a-woman guide. It is more intimate, more flawed than that. It is dedicated to her family, to Jack (Antonoff, her rock-star boyfriend) and to Nora (Ephron, her late mentor). The latter's influence is felt in the whipsmart observations that leap off every other page. Sex is "like shoving a loofah into a Mason jar"" wrote Alice Jones of the Independent.

"[It's] a kind of memoir disguised as an advice book, or a how-to-book (as in how to navigate the perilous waters of girlhood) in the guise of a series of personal essays," said Michiko Kakutani of the New York Times.

"This book is emphatically not a feminist polemic," wrote Helen Lewis of the New Statesman, "There is one chapter where she imagines the memoir she'll write at 80, in which she will name the names of all the creepy male directors who have propositioned her, and one letter (in a collection of "emails I would send if I were one ounce crazier/angrier/braver") that smacks of real, rather than posturing anger, at having her feminism derided."
