What would you pay to travel into space with Leonard DiCaprio?

The Hollywood star auctioned off a ticket to board one of the first commercial flights into space in Cannes, France, for amFAR, an international non-profit organisation that supports AIDS research, Variety reports.

The person who won the bidding war has not yet been identified, but whoever it was must be rather wealthy as the ticket eventually sold for around $1million, and will now be joining the actor on a 2015 Virgin Galactic space trip.

DiCaprio already donated another seat on the space adventure at last year's amfAR Gala, which sold for $1.5 million to Russian real estate mogul Vasily Klyukin.

Sharon Stone, chair of amFAR, severed as this year's auctioneer at the annual event held at the five-star Hotel du Cap-Eden-Roc in Cap d'Antibes, which raised $35 million.

Items such as a 10,000-year-old woolly-mammoth skeleton coated in steel by Damien Hirst, 1967 Andy Warhol painting of Marilyn Monroe and a pair of gloves once owned by fashion mogul Karl Lagerfeld were also auctioned off.

"Today is the day we can say we have a cure for pediatric AIDS," Stone said to the A-list audience. "There were many times we came here over the years where we're failing."

"Now we are in the beginning of the end of AIDS," she continued. By 2020, she predicted a vaccine would exist for HIV/AIDS.

As for Leo, he should be ecstatic about the space travel trip as it seems the 'Wolf of Wall Street' actor is in much need of a break, according to his close friends.

''Leo has been working like a demon over the past three years - and it's now starting to come back and haunt him," they recently said. "He's pretty burned out at the moment and suffering from insomnia from pushing himself so hard."

They added, "Everybody is begging Leo to slow down but he's just very focused on making a lot of money right now -- to the exclusion of almost everything else."
