The Hunger Games star met and fell in love with Miley on the set of their romantic drama The Last Song in 2009, and they became engaged in 2012.

However, the relationship didn't last and they parted ways in September, 2013.

Now Australian actor Liam is opening up about the failed romance in a candid interview with Men's Fitness magazine, and the 25 year old claims there was nothing fake about the headline-grabbing relationship.

"You fall in love with who you fall in love with," he says. "You can never choose. I guess some people just come with a little more baggage."

"I mean, look - we were together five (sic) years," he continues. "So I don't think those feelings will ever change. And that's good because that proves to me that it was real. It wasn't just a fling. It really was an important part of my life and always will be."

Liam famously rebounded from the split by enjoying a brief dalliance with Mexican model Eiza Gonzalez, who he was photographed kissing just a day after his break-up with Miley went public. But Liam insists romance is the last thing on his mind right now as he focuses on his career.

"Dating's really difficult," he admits. "I'm constantly travelling, and I don't go out to clubs or anything like that. I have a great small group of friends in my life, but I barely ever meet anyone new.

"It's tough to have a relationship in this industry, though not to the point where it makes me depressed. I'm constantly working, and I love working. I don't feel like I'm missing out on anything at this point - I feel like I'm focusing on the right things and prioritising things in the right way, and I'm a healthy, happy person."

Former Hannah Montana star Miley, who has since swapped her squeaky clean image for a more raunchy public persona, previously reflected on the broken engagement, suggesting her own personal struggles with depression and anxiety contributed to their split.

"When I was with (Liam) or when I was on Disney, the thing that gave me the most anxiety was not knowing what to do with myself when Disney wasn't there to carry me anymore or if I didn't have him," the 22 year old told Elle magazine last year (14).

"And now I'm free of both of those things, and I'm fine. Like, I lay in bed at night by myself and I'm totally OK, and that's so much stronger than the person (I was) three years ago, who would have thought they would have died if they didn't have a boyfriend."

She went on to date actor Patrick Schwarzenegger, while she has most recently been linked to model Stella Maxwell.
