The 20 year-old tweeted the 'Duck Commander CEO, "huge love to you/your family huge respect for your business prosperities and the family values you still all behold. big fan."

The nature of the tweet has bewildered 1D fans as they cannot understand why Payne would show support to the Robertson's after their patriarch Phil Robertson made some controversial comments about homosexuality in a GQ magazine interview.

The 67 year-old quoted the bible and compared homosexuality to bestiality as well as expressing his beliefs that being gay is a sin.

"Start with homosexual behavior and just morph out from there," he said, "...bestiality, sleeping around with this woman and that woman and that woman and those men."

Shortly after posting the tweet, Liam posted another which clarified his stance on the Robertson's "family values".

"Being a fan of someone's show and the way they still hold a family together doesn't mean i am ok with all they say," he posted.

Mr Robertson's comments earned him a suspension from the show, the network released a statement at the time which read, "We are extremely disappointed to have read Phil Robertson's comments in GQ, which are based on his own personal beliefs and are not reflected in the series Duck Dynasty."

However, A&E quickly welcomed him back after Christmas due to demand by fans and speculation that the rest of the family would leave if he wasn't reinstated.
