Lionel Richie was so determined to help his daughter NICOLE overcome her drug addiction, he checked into rehab with her.
The Commodores star was relieved when the socialite checked into an Arizona medical facility in 2003 to face her substance abuse problems.
But Richie and his ex-wife Brenda, Nicole's mother, insisted upon staying in the centre to help their daughter on her road to recovery.
Richie tells U.S. talk show host Larry King, "For Nicole's mom and me, it (Nicole's drug demons) gave me an amazing opportunity to step up to the plate. I said to her (Brenda) one day, 'I have some good news and some bad news. The bad news is that Nicole's gonna die. The good news is she doesn't have to.'
"I remember that look on her face - the sheer panic. I said the only person that's going to be able to save Nicole is Nicole. She went away and three weeks later I got a phone call saying, 'Dad, I want to go to rehab.' And when she checked into rehab, her mother and I checked into rehab with her. We stayed there for the first week, we wanted to make sure we understood exactly what she was getting into."
And the Hello hitmaker still regrets not giving the Simple Life star enough support throughout her early years, admitting he was concentrating on building a successful solo career: "I wish I could've been there more for her but I was trying to make it as the solo guy at that time. She caught me right at that wonderful period where that rocket took off again for the second time."
