The former Lostprophets front-man Ian Watkins has pleaded guilty to a range of child abuse offenses, including the attempted rape of a baby. He pleaded guilty to ‘attempted rape’ and ‘attempted sexual assault’ of a child under 13 but denied charges of ‘rape’, according to the BBC.

The news comes after the 36-year-old “furiously denied" the allegations. Prosecuting barrister Chris Clee QC told the court: "Ian Watkins was the lead singer in a successful band called the Lostprophets. He accepts he was a determined and committed paedophile."

He also admitted to a range of other charges, including three counts of sexual assault involving children and six involving taking, making possessing indecent images of children and one of possessing an extreme pornographic image involving a sex act on an animal.

All defendants will be sentenced on December 19th 2013.

Evidence against the former rock star came in the form of his laptop, which included footage of abuse from various locations in London and south Wales – primarily hotels.

At 2.52pm, on Tuesday, November 26th, Wales Online posted an entry to their live-blog that stated: “The court is now hearing details about the case relating to Ian Watkins that are too graphic to be published.” Watkins stood alongside two women associated with the case.

"Both women sexually abused their own children and made them available to Watkins for him to abuse," added Mr Clee.

Lostprophets split following Ian Watkins allegations

Woman A admitted the attempted rape of a baby after initially denying rape and two of sexual assault as well as taking and distributing an indecent photograph of a child.

Woman B pleaded guilty to conspiring to rape a child, three sexual assault charges and four charges of taking, possessing or distributing indecent images.

The court heard of text messages that highlighted the abuse. "If you belong to me, so does your baby," said Watkins in a text to one of the women. To Watkins, the second woman messaged images of a child saying: "She needs to know Mummy and daddy don't love her."

The presiding judge, Mr Justice Royce, told the defendants: "There will not be a trial in this case. The defendants have all pleaded guilty to nearly all the charges against them. The prosecution does not seek a trial in these circumstances. You have been saved from having to watch extremely graphic and distressing material."

Catrin Evans, Head of Complex Casework Unit for the Crown Prosecution Service, Wales, said a statement: “The three defendants in this case have admitted very serious sexual offences committed against extremely young children, demonstrating sexual exploitation at its worst.

“A number of the victims are too young to be able to understand what has happened to them, yet the defendants exploited them for their own gratification.

“The prosecution case is based on robust evidence uncovered by the investigation team and the South Wales Police High Tech Crime Unit. The CPS team worked closely with the police to build a strong case and this has been a major factor in today’s guilty pleas.” We’ll have more to follow on this story as it breaks.
