The long wait for a television series based on popular DC superheroine Supergirl may officially be over, as American television channel NBC is reported to have put in a series order for the upcoming project.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, Warner Bros. Television has teamed up with Greg Berlanti and Ali Adler to make the series, the pair having previously worked together on ABC superhero series 'No Ordinary Family'. A series based on the adventures of Kara Zor-El, cousin of Superman, has been in the works as far back as 2006, but it seems plans are finally going ahead to make the dream a reality.

Superhero shows are set to dominate the screens this autumn, with several new ones on the horizon as well as established ratings favourite 'Arrow' and 'Agents of S.H.I.E.LD'. Fox is kicking off proceedings on Monday with the Batman prequel 'Gotham' which stars O.C alumni Ben McKenzie, whilst the CW (home of 'Arrow') has spin-off series 'Flash' starting soon. ABC, home of Disney/Marvel show 'Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D' has a companion series, 'Agent Carter' filming currently.

Meanwhile online film and television subscription service Netflix has four Marvel series in development as well as a mini series based on popular vigelante Daredevil coming soon. In addition to nabbing Supergirl for their schedule, NBC also has a series based on the Hellblazer comics, 'Constantine' which will be airing Stateside soon. It seems television channels are keen to capitalise on the success of superhero films at the box office- Marvel's Guardians of the Galaxy has been named the biggest film of 2014.

The big question now is, who could play Supergirl? The character was previously played by Laura Vandervoort on The CW's Smallville from 2007 til 2011 and rumours of Mischa Barton and Taylor Swift taking the role have come and gone over the years, but fans will no doubt have a lot of guesses as to who could be donning the blue and red outfit next!
