The 1990s cult television series, Xena: Warrior Princess, may be back on our screens fairly soon. A reboot is reportedly in the works as NBC and NBC Universal are already preparing for a new series. The reboot is in the very early stages, reports suggest, and a search for a writer is ongoing. It's uncertain if the show's original star, New Zealand actress Lucy Lawless, will be returning to the show in her role as Xena or if a new actress will start Xena's adventures all over again for a new audience.

Xena ran for six seasons between 1995 and 2001. Lawless starred as the eponymous heroine, a highly competent warrior who attempted to atone for her past sins by saving the innocent from mythical beasts, malevolent overlords and even the wrath of the gods. Xena first appeared in Hercules: The Legendary Journeys, but her character was such a huge hit with fans a spin-off was spawned and it was eventually developed into a comic book. Set in the ancient Mediterranean world, Xena was accompanied on her travels by her companion, Gabrielle (played by Renee O'Connor). It is uncertain if O'Connor will also return for the upcoming series.

Although Lawless' return has yet to be confirmed, producers are hoping she will have a role both on-screen and behind the scenes. The original show's executive producers, Rob Tapert (Lawless' husband) and Sam Raimi, are returning for the reboot.

Lawless, who has recently appeared in Salem and Marvel's Agents of S.H.I.E.L.D., has been vocal about her desire to play Xena again, (spoiler alert) despite the death of her character in the season six finale. Lawless recently appeared at San Diego Comic-Con, where she was promoting her upcoming series Ash Vs. Evil Dead, and spoke of her determination to see Xena back on our screens. As a cult show, there's always been a huge call from fans for a reboot and Lawless revealed she is as frustrated as the fans in waiting for any news on Xena's future.

The Hollywood Reporter first reported the news.
