Lupita Nyong'o was the uncontested queen of the red carpet at the Oscars.

The actress stunned in a baby blue Prada gown with a plunging neckline as she picked up her Best Supporting Actress award for her tear-jerking performance in '12 Years a Slave' at the 86th annual Academy Awards last night (02.03.14).

Hollywood's new fashion darling, who has constantly topped the best dressed lists this awards season, accessorised the stunning silk georgette custom-made dress with a Fred Leighton diamond headband and pearl earrings.

''Nairobiblue'' instantly began trending on Twitter after Lupita enthused, ''It's a blue that reminds me of Nairobi, and so I wanted to have a little bit of home''.

Also leading the fashion pack was Best Actress winner Cate Blanchett, who opted for a heavily embellished Armani gown, paired with huge opal drop earrings by Chopard. She described the bejewelled look as ''heavy'', adding ''but I love it!''

Jennifer Lawrence made an impact when she arrived fashionably late at The Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles, standing out in a strapless red Dior number amid a sea of shimmering nudes. The star, who tripped on the red carpet, set off her dress with a $2 million diamond necklace.

Ditching her usual black attire, Angelina Jolie sparkled in an Elie Saab Couture gown, while Kate Hudson was the picture of elegance draped in a silver Atelier Versace dress.

According to ABC, Hal Rubenstein, editor at large of InStyle magazine, noted that this year subtlety and sophistication was key in the style stakes.

He said: ''Everyone is dressing very kind of Audrey Hepburn classic. Nobody was doing anything too out there. It's more about the fact that this is the way to look good, rather than for shock value. People just want to look beautiful and be noticed for themselves.''
