Lupita's Met Ball dress if you're loving it or loathing it, you're still certainly talking about it.
At the Met Gala on Sunday night, Oscar winner and the fashion world’s latest muse, Lupita Nyong’o divided opinion with her choice of Prada dress. Do you love it? Or do you hate it? The intent is divided as is the fashion world. Has Lupita made her first big fashion fail, or was this one a red carpet risk worth taking?
Lupita's flapper inspired Prada dress
There was only one real star to come out of this year’s awards season, Lupita Nyong’o. It wasn’t just because of her award winning performance in 12 Years A Slave that all eyes were on Lupita. It was also because, at every awards show on every red carpet she stepped on to, Lupita hit a fashion home run with her choice of gown. Red Chanel at the Golden Globes, emerald green Dior at the BAFTA’s and her breathtaking sky blue Oscar’s Prada, Lupita nailed it every time on the red carpet.

That’s probably why opinion is so divided on her choice for Sunday’s Met Ball. Her green, flapper inspired Prada dress was certainly the most risky red carpet decision she’d made so far. The netted dress, adorned with beading and feathers was certainly not in keeping with her other more ‘classic’ red carpet choices. It was busy, fussy even and green, very, very green, especially when you including the matching headband, shoes and bag. It’s a dress that was destined to inspire many 'what does Lupita look like?' memes.

But hold on, wasn’t this the Met Ball? Where fashion’s most forward and fearless come out to parade in their most ‘one night only’ dresses. If there ever was an occasion to take a fashion risk it was on Sunday night. Playing it safe or playing it boring would open you up to just as much criticism as wearing something truly unique. Lupita’s other red carpet looks were clean, crisp and perfect for an awards ceremony, but Sunday night was when she was really able to express herself and she did and as always, she looked beautiful doing it.
Lupita's dress was the evening's most talked about
Lupita knows that her awards season success has landed her right in the center of the fashion world and now it’s all about keeping her place there. Fashion icons aren’t born out of playing it safe, they take risks and aren’t afraid to show off their personal flair. Lupita’s Met Ball dress proved she belonged among Hollywood’s fashion elite, she’s young she’s fresh and she’s finding her own style along the way. A fashion, fail? Never, a real fashion fail is wearing a dress that’s not worth talking about, something Lupita is still yet to do.
