Why Did Drake Dis Macklemore Whilst Hosting The 2014 ESPY Awards?

Drake Macklemore Kendrick Lamar

Seven months has not been long enough for Drake's wounds, inflicted at the Grammy Awards, to heal. The 27-year-old rapper hosted the ESPY Awards (Excellent in Sports Performance Yearly Awards) on Wednesday (16th July) and performed two new sports themed songs. Unfortunately for another rapper, Macklemore, Drake included some blatantly obvious and envious references to his success.

"Who Is Ryan Lewis?" Fans Don't Recognize Macklemore's Other-Half Ryan Lewis

Macklemore

The award-winning duo of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis must have hoped for more educated fans!

Although there is only one vocalist, it takes a team effort to create hit tracks such as 'Thrift Shop,' 'Same Love' and 'Can't Hold Us,' with which a producer is essential.

But do people actually know this? Jimmy Fallon wanted to find out so he sent the real Ryan Lewis into New York to see if the public knew who he was, in a segment for the 'Tonight Show.'

"Who Is Ryan Lewis" Asks Ryan Lewis In Hilarious Jimmy Fallon Clip

Macklemore Jimmy Fallon

Ryan Lewis has been forced to ask "Who is Ryan Lewis?" after he began to realise that his professional other half and rapper, Macklemore, was getting a lot more attention than him. Turns out that people don't really know what the producer and DJ actually does.

Luckily, Jimmy Fallon is here to give the music star the publicity leg-up he so clearly needs. Lewis appeared on The Tonight Show last night and featured in a street canvassing stunt to gauge just how much people knew about him with some pretty hilarious results.

Lewis hit the city streets armed with a camera and some questions to interview the general public on their thoughts towards hip hop; more specifically Macklemore & Ryan Lewis; more specifically just Ryan Lewis.

Macklemore Releases Statement & Apologises For 'Racist Stereotype' Costume

Macklemore

Macklemore has released a statement apologising for the “offensive” costume he wore on stage in Seattle on Friday (16th May).

Macklemore
Macklemore has released a statement explaining his costume choice.

The 30-year-old appeared on stage at the EMP Museum in Seattle wearing a false nose, wig and beard. A costume choice which landed the American rapper in a P.R. disaster zone as many accused him of alluding to Jewish stereotypes. Of course, this incident simply emphasises how this stereotype continues to thrive as this was the first thing a number of commentators thought when they saw Macklemore in disguise. Talk about irony!

Macklemore In Hot Water As Fake Witches Nose, Wig And Beard = Racist Stereotype

Macklemore

Despite Macklemore’s protestations that his pick ‘n’ mix costume was simply a random guise, not intended to portray a racial stereotype in any way, shape or form, it sort-of-has been construed as a racial stereotype – you know; the ones the Nazis used with a view to persecuting Jews. Those ones. During ‘Thrift Shop’.

MackelmoreMackelmore is facing fierce criticism for his choice of fancy dress

“A fake witches nose, wig, and beard = random costume. Not my idea of a stereotype of anybody,” read a defensive Tweet from Macklemore whom – we assume, because we have to – thinks that apologising would be an admission of guilt. We’re assuming that because of the lack of apology, by the way. We haven’t had a chat about it, us and Mack.

Feud Fallout: Macklemore Needs Damage Control, Drake Needs Free Publicity

Drake Macklemore Kendrick Lamar

Despite the success of his debut album The Heist, it’s safe to say that Ben Haggarty, aka Macklemore isn’t really the most beloved rapper out there. His Grammy win over the Kanye West, Drake and most of all Kendrick Lamar (whom it seemed like everyone was rooting for) only made the situation worse.

Macklemore, Grammy Awards
Macklemore's "nice guy" image is a bit chipped at the edges.

Maybe the rapper was trying to placate those same critics, by instagram-ing an “apology” text message to Lamar after the show, but the idea completely backfired. It could have come and gone and Haggarty’s reputation would have stayed relatively unscathed, only he had to go and commit the biggest sin for a celebrity – over-sharing.

Grammys 2014: Macklemore Admits He Robbed Kendrick Lamar For Best Rap Album

Macklemore

The majority of fans seemed to have been shocked by Macklemore & Ryan Lewis' dominance in the rap category at the 2014 Grammys, especially the duo winning Best Rap Album.

Many believed the rightful winner was Compton newcomer Kendrick Lamar's debut 'Good Kid, M.A.A.D City,' and another person who agreed with the masses was Macklemore himself.

The rapper, whose real name is Ben Haggerty, took to Instagram shortly after the award ceremony and posted a screenshot of a text message he sent to fellow nominee Kendrick Lamar.

The 56th annual Grammy awards lineup, which already includes the likes of Paul McCartney, Taylor Swift, Macklemore & Ryan Lewis and Daft Punk, among others, has just got a whole lot more exciting with the addition of Beyonce and Madonna. So far, plans to include the two iconic performers in the lineup are only tentative, but it is a definite possibility, according to the Los Angeles Times.

A performance by Beyonce would be the first chance to hear the new songs live.

The ceremony will be broadcast on Sunday, January 26 from LA’s Staples Center. Macklemore And Ryan Lewis Shock New York City Commuters With Surprise Performance On Bus

Macklemore

For commuters on a New York City bus, the start of this cold wintery day seemed like any other, until one of music's hottest new acts jumped aboard.

Macklemore & Ryan Lewis shocked the bus riders by performing an impromptu concert while it was still driving.

After the duo paid their fare, Lewis pulled down his hood, pushed 'play' on his boom box, and began to clap the beat, The Hollywood Reporter notes.

With great stardom comes great responsibility, as Taylor Swift proved this year. The singer had a phenomenally successful year with her RED tour, but she was also very charitable with her earning – the most charitable celebrity, in fact, according to DoSomething’s annual list for 2013.

The beautiful and talented Swift turned out to be quite charitable as well.

Unsurprisingly, Kanye West Isn't Happy With Yeezus' Album Of The Year Snub At The Grammys

Kanye West Grammy Awards Macklemore Taylor Swift Daft Punk Kendrick Lamar

Kanye West isn't afraid to make his feelings be known and as you may expect, the rapper had plenty to say after the nominations for the 2014 Grammy Awards were revealed last week, with his latest album Yeezus only getting two nominations in the rap categories. Rather than count his blessings, Kanye let his feelings be known at a recent stop off in Phoenix, Arizona, where he queried what the Grammys are "trying to say."

Kanye West
Kanye can't believe he only has two Grammy nods

A video of Kanye's near-15-minute rant made its way on to KissFM's Instagram page and website, with the opinionated rapper questioning why on earth he has been overlooked in favour of Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Sara Bareilles and others Kanye would never consider to be on his level. Informing the crowd, the rapper raved, "Yeezus is the top 1 or 2 album on every single list, but only gets two nominations from the Grammys. What are they trying to say?"

Hip Hop Returns In A Big Way To This Year's Grammys, With Jay Z, Kendrick Lamar And Macklemore Topping The Nominees List

Jay Z Kanye West Kendrick Lamar Macklemore Drake

Hip hop artists don’t tend to have a great relationship with the Grammys, with people like Jay Z and Kanye West having openly boycotted the ceremony after being snubbed for awards. This year, however, is the year of hip hop if anything. Jay Z is the undisputed king of the nominees list with nine nods to his name, including the coveted Best Rap Performance, Best Rap/Sung Collaboration and Best Rap Song, for his Magna Carta Holy Grail hits "Tom Ford," "Part II (On the Run)," and "Holy Grail," respectively, MTV reports. This comes after two years of Mr Carter boycotting the awards. In 2002 he refused to attend the Grammys, explaining: “I am boycotting the Grammys because too many major rap artists continue to be overlooked.”

Jay Z, Ziggo Dome
Was it Jay Z's boycott that fixed the situation?

He boycotted the 2011 and 2012 awards for the same sentiment. Hov did make the 2013 Grammys in a big way, however and it looks like he will also make an appearance at the 2014 awards.

'Blurred Lines' is the biggest selling single of 2013 in the UK, the Official Charts Company revealed today (7 Dec), having sold more than 1 million copies in the UK alone. Robin Thicke's controversial track managed to beat Daft Punk's come-back single 'Get Lucky' to the top of the yearly chart, providing these results don't prompt a huge surge in re-interest in the Daft Punk track.

With 1.44 million copies sold in the UK, Thicke's single edged ahead of the French electronic heroes by a few thousand copies, with 'Get Lucky' so far having sold 1.28 million copies. Either way, this is great news for Pharrell Williams, who appears on both tracks.

Daft Punk are up for both categories, with 'Get Lucky' and their album Random Access Memories earning recognition from the Grammy committee. The MTV EMAs Will Have Ron Burgundy To Anchor Them After A Performance From Katy Perry

Katy Perry Will Ferrell Macklemore Justin Timberlake Lady GaGa

Katy Perry is one MTV darling who just keeps coming back – this time she will be at the EMAs (European Music Awards), almost three months after performing at the oh-so-scandalous VMAs back in August, the good folk from MTV have announced. On 10 November, Perry will take the stage in Amsterdam to perform 'Unconditionally' – the second single off her third album, Prism. The EMA audience might be in for an even bigger treat than those who got to witness the singer’s performance of 'Roar' at the VMAs, since Perry has mentioned in previous interviews that 'Unconditionally' is actually her favorite track off the album.

Katy Perry, iTunes Festival
The 'Roar'singer's schedule is fully booked these days, most recently with an appearance at the iTunes festival in London.

This is a return to the EMAs for Perry, who got to host in both 2008 and 2009. The same cannot be said about the other lead performer, however. Ron Burgundy, the 70s news anchor and lead character in Anchorman, was recently announced as the other lead act of the EMAs. Of course Will Ferrell or rather, Ron Burgundy, is sure to bring some class to the event, if only by bringing his perfectly quaffed hair to the event.

The decision to run without a host this year was an unusual one for the awards show that has historically had celebrities and comedians bringing the bad jokes and keeping the proceedings stitched together. By being broadcast host-less, the awards presented the opportunity for the music and stars to enjoy greater precedence than ever before in an evening of true music celebration.

Friends In High Places Aid Songwriter Bonnie McKee's Bid For Pop Stardom

Bonnie McKee Katy Perry Macklemore Adam Lambert Carly Rae Jepsen George Takei

It looks like there’s a new pop star in the vicinity – or an aspiring one anyway. You may not have heard Bonnie McKee’s name before (in which case, you better get used to it), but the songwriter is the one behind major hits by Ke$ha, Katy Perry, Tayo Cruz, Britney Spears and many, many others. Now she’s thrown in her bid for a solo career in front of the mic. Appropriately, with its poppy tune, upbeat chords and summery vibe, the song sounds strongly reminiscent of a Katy Perry number or two – presumably, also written by McKee. If the poppy, synth-infused tune American Girl isn’t exactly to your liking, maybe the video will change your mind.

The video features McKee of course, but it also has more cameos than a Saturday Night Live episode. Starting with Katy Perry, we also get to see celebrities like Macklemore, Aram Lambert, Carly Rae Jepsen, Karmin, Nicole Scherzinger, Kiss, George Takei, Perez Hilton, etc. etc. – and that’s not even half the list. It also features McKee eating a red-white-and-blue popsicle, but that’s beside the point. This is probably one of the benefits of working in the music industry – lots and lots of friends available for help, should you ever feel like launching a musical career of your own.

The Hangout Musical Festival returns to Gulf Shores, Alabama, this weekend with a pretty varied line-up including Stevie Wonder, Kings Of Leon and Tom Petty as well as a number of notable hip-hop acts. Though the headliners will no doubt draw sizeable crowds, the lies of Kendrick Lamar and the outstanding Public Enemy are the most interesting performances on offer.

Lamar, hip-hop's current golden child, hits the stage on Saturday (May 18, 2013) playing tracks from his critically acclaimed major label debut good kid, m.A.A.d city. Watch out for singles Swimming Pools and Poetic Justice (with Drake) and the superb Bitch Don't Kill My Vibe.

Legendary group Public Enemy, who were recently inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame, will take to the stage rather early on Saturday (1.30pm). The hip-hop outfit are still a live force to be reckoned with and you shouldn't miss these.

Machine Gun Kelly Wins Big At MtvU Woodie Awards

Macklemore Machine Gun Kelly South by Southwest

The mtvU Woodie Awards have been announced, and, ahead of MTV's 30-minute special this Sunday (March, 17), Machine Gun Kelly was named Woodie of The Year in the multi-genre ceremony.

"As many dark times that we've had, the fans have always shown me the light and I'm ready to take on the world with them," Machine Gun Kelly - a keen fan of 50 Shades of Grey - said after winning Woodie of the Year. "No quote can describe my gratitude. F---ing thank you! Lace up." He won Breaking Woodie last year, so this is just a natural progression, right? The Breaking Woodie award THIS YEAR went to rapper and Odd Future member Earl Sweatshirt, who won over Alt-J, The Lumineers, Dillon Francis, and others. His track Chum has been one of the most popular of 2012. Macklemore & Ryan Lewis - history makers with their No. 1 single Thrift Shop - got the Branching Out Woodie, beating out Amanda Palmer, Avicii, Deadmau5, Jack White and The XX.

Amongst the performers are Zedd, who, before missing out on the Breaking Woodie, said: "I am thrilled to be performing at the 2013 Woodies!," said Zedd. "As a nominee I'm both thankful and excited for the opportunity and can't wait to unveil my set for the fans." Performances from Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, Twenty One Pilots, and a surprise visit from T.I are the other reasons to tune in on Sunday to see how it all unfolded.

Download Kings: Macklemore And Ryan Lewis Top Charts With 'Thrift Shop' For Seven Weeks

Macklemore

Carly Rae Jepsen should be looking over her shoulder right now, because Macklemore’s coming to get her. Metaphorically speaking, that is. MTV reported yesterday (February 27, 2013) that Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’ breakthrough hit ‘Thrift Shop’ is still riding high at the top of the Billboard Digital Songs chart, with seven weeks at the top.

This is the longest that any song has retained that place at the to of the digital song chart since Carly Rae Jepsen’s ‘Call Me Maybe,’ which also managed a seven week run last year. ‘Thrift Shop’ has quickly become one of those inescapable hits, playing in every shop you enter and every time you switch the radio or television on. So far, fans have downloaded the song over 360,000 times, making it only the second song to ever sell more than 300,000 downloads (along with Fun’s ‘We Are Young.’). It looks as though Baauer’s ‘Harlem Shake’ - which has received one hell of a promotional boost since the Harlem Shake dance craze went viral on YouTube – could well be the next to join that elite club of 300,000 plus downloads, as it’s already rising at 297,000 as we speak. The iTunes chart (also downloads) speaks a similar story, with Macklemore at the top there as well.

Billboard This Week: Macklemore And Ryan Lewis Dominate

Macklemore Bruno Mars Justin Timberlake The Lumineers Taylor Swift

Some unexpected twists and turns have hit this week’s Billboard Hot 100, including Justin Timberlake’s 'Suit and Tie's' massive leap from 84 to 4.

'Suit and Tie' marks Justin's 12th Hot 100 Top 10 single as a solo or featured artist and his first since her appeared on Ciara’a 'Love Sex Magic' in 2009. The biggest news, though, is probably the number one. Bruno Mars’s 'Locked Out Of Heaven' finally got bumped from the top spot, after a six-week reign, by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis’s 'Thrift Shop'. The song snagged the top spot mostly because of its digital sales (431 000 downloads last week, coupled with a lot of streaming). 'Thrift Shop' actually beat the streaming record, with 1, 68 million streaming plays this week, beating out the previous streaming record holder, Gotye’s 'Somebody That I Used To Know' by a narrow margin. 'Locked Out Of Heaven' has slipped to number 3, followed by The Lumineers’ 'Hey Ho' at number 4 and Taylor Swift’s 'I Knew You Were Trouble', which fell down one spot this week to number 5.

Good ol’ Britney Spears comes in at number 6 with 'Scream and Shout', featuring Will.i.Am, while Swedish House Mafia’s 'Don’t Worry Child' stays put at number 7. Rounding out this week’s top ten are 'Diamonds' by Rihanna, Justin Bieber’s 'Beauty and a Beat' and Philips Philips’ 'Home' at 8, 9 and 10 respectively.
