Madonna has said she’s standing by son Rocco, after it was reported yesterday he had been arrested for possession of cannabis.

The Sun broke the story that the 16-year-old was picked up by police on September 28, after officers found him with a small amount of the drug, following complaints from his neighbours in Notting Hill.

In a statement to ABC News, Madonna described the incident as "a family matter.”

The singer added: "I love my son very much. I will do whatever I can to give him the support that he needs, and I ask that you respect our privacy at this time.”

Earlier in the week she had posted a cryptic message to Instagram, along with a video of her youngest son David horseback riding.

She captioned the video: “We are just gonna ride this week out! We Can Beat them forever and ever!!! We can All Be Hero’s!!!”.

Rocco is not expected to be left with a permanent criminal record after his arrest, instead he will be dealt with under the ‘Triage’ youth justice scheme.

A spokesperson for Scotland Yard said: "A 16-year-old has been arrested for possession of cannabis. He was bailed and dealt with by Camden Borough's Youth Offending Team.”

Meanwhile, Rocco’s friends are said to be finding the whole incident “hilarious", because the 16-year-old was just behaving like a normal teenager.

"Everyone thinks the Rocco thing is hilarious. He's in trouble after bunning [taking a drag from a joint],” a source told The Mirror.

"His friends have been joking about #freerocco since the news came out.

"He's not a wild child, he's a normal teenager,” the source added. “There are people in his circle who are a lot more misbehaved than him."
