Maggie Wheeler, the actress who played Chandler Bing’s on-off girlfriend Janice in ‘Friends’, has been discussing how her character’s infamous cackle came about. Appearing on ‘This Morning’, Wheeler, who doesn't actually talk like Janice, said the laugh came about “organically” during rehearsals.

"It was just progression – how Janice evolved, how the writers created the character for me," Wheeler told hosts Eamon Holmes and Ruth Langsford. "So the laugh happened organically in the first rehearsal, because I needed to find a way to laugh, because Matthew Perry is so funny.”

"And working with him, I knew right away, I thought, 'This guy's gonna make me laugh on set, I've gotta be prepared. What am I going to do?’” she continued. “So I created Janice's laugh just as a safety measure for when Matthew made me laugh."

When asked if she knew that Janice would become one of the show’s most memorable characters Wheeler admitted: "It was always a surprise that she continued to have a life on the show.

“I was always so thrilled every time the writers decided to bring me back. It started out as a one-shot deal — come in, do one episode — and out of that came 10 years of this extraordinary, joyful experience.”

The actress also revealed what her favourite Janice moment was. "In the Valentine's episode where Janice ends up by accident at a restaurant with Chandler and she said, 'I cut all your faces out of pictures, you could use these in your little puppet theatre of cruelty,'" Wheeler said.
