Mariah Carey has spoken badly of her time as a judge on ‘American Idol’, describing it as an “abusive experience”.

Carey was speaking at an informal press conference at the Television Press Critics Summer Press Tour this week, according to Billboard, when she was asked about her short-lived stint on the Fox series’ 12th season in early 2013.

“Ugh! It was the most the most abusive experience! By the way, you’ve just driven me to drink,” she said, raising a glass of champagne to underline her point. When pressed to elaborate on her point, however, she dodged the question.

Back in November 2013, she also alluded to hating the experience. Referring in particular about when she frequently butted heads with Nicki Minaj, she said “it was like going to work every day in hell with Satan” in an interview with radio station Hot 97.

She was speaking at the event to promote her forthcoming docu-series ‘Mariah’s World’, which is premiering on E! on December 4th. Offering fans a glimpse at the 46 year old’s day-to-day life as she prepares to wed her fiancé, billionaire James Packer, it will be a must-see for her legions of fans.

“I don’t know that anybody really knows the real me, because if somebody sees me on TV or here or in an interview, it’s not enough time to get to know somebody,” she told reporters about her public image. “If you know somebody for 10 years, you kind of know the real them… hopefully they’ll see other sides of me they either find entertaining or something good instead of bad.”

About the prospect of letting cameras follow her around all the time, Carey said that while she initially found the experience off-putting, she did it for her fans.

“I think in the beginning I was withholding the amount of access because I’m never sure who to trust. I just didn’t know how things were going to be perceived… We’re still in the process of filming and getting more real moments,” she revealed. “My goal is to make this a lasting piece of work for my fans.”
