Have Haters Driven Mariah Carey To Weight-Loss Surgery?

There's definitely something wrong with the world when a beauty like Mariah Carey feels she needs to undergo invasive weight-loss surgery to stem the flow of online abuse about her body. Alas, she's still gone and done it, so we hope it makes her happier.

It's true that the 'All I Want For Christmas Is You' singer has been looking curvier than usual, but what else can one expect from a woman in her late 40s with two young kids? She's still not 'fat' by any stretch of the imagination, but that hasn't stopped her going under the knife for gastric sleeve surgery six weeks ago.

The procedure isn't quite as drastic as the more commonly known gastric bypass surgery, usually reserved for severely obese individuals, and is carried out with a small incision, removing part of the stomach to make the patient feel full quicker.

As shocking as it might sound nonetheless, one of the reasons why Mariah decided to have the operation was because her increasing weight was affecting her movement on stage during her Las Vegas residency.

'Mariah has always been proud of her curves, but this summer, as her Caesars Palace residency came to a close, and then she went on tour with Lionel Richie, she noticed it became harder to dance, and she was getting a lot more criticism online from body shamers', a source told Page Six. 'Mariah underwent the procedure about a month ago, and she is already seeing some good results, and she feels a lot better.'

Despite all this, the singer has insisted in the past that she is not 'obsessed' with her weight, and her fluctuations are down to not really noticing when she's got heavier. 

'If someone doesn't say something to me [about my weight] then I'll just not think about it', she previously told ET. 'I'm not obsessed with that that way. The funny thing with me is I would always be like, 'Oh! I gained weight,' because I am muscular, so sometimes I don't even notice it.'

In fact, she says she doesn't even weigh herself. 'People will think I'm a liar but it's true', she told Page Six. 'I'm a big-boned girl, I'm tall, and so I always weigh more. I would tend to go, 'Does this size dress fit me that I wore three years ago?' I would go by what it looked like, how I felt.'
