A pair of rhinestone earrings once worn by Marilyn Monroe has sold at auction for $185,000 (£115,625).

The late movie star showed off the dangling silver earrings while attending the 1955 premiere of The Rose Tattoo, a film based on Tennessee Williams play of the same name, and it was snapped up by a collector as part of the Julien's Auctions Hollywood memorabilia sale in Beverly Hills, California this weekend (11-13Apr14).

Other sale highlights include a lighter used by Humphrey Bogart, which went under the hammer for $19,200 (£12,000), and a 1986 Pontiac Firebird formerly owned by Baywatch star David Hasselhoff, which was purchased for $152,600 (£95,375).

Another Hasselhoff item, a 14-foot (4.2 metre) tall model made in his likeness, had to be taken off the auction block last week (ends11Apr14) after the actor changed his mind about offloading it so he could keep it in his possession. The larger-than-life prop, which featured the Tv star in his famous red swimming trunks, was created for The Spongebob Squarepants Movie in 2004 and had been estimated to sell for between $20,000 (£11,914) and $30,000 (£17,871).
