Mark Hamill Confirms Luke Skywalker Doesn't Turn To The Dark Side In 'Star Wars'

There have been some incredible teases when it comes to the next 'Star Wars' film, 'The Last Jedi', with many jumping to the conclusion that Luke Skywalker (Mark Hamill) would be turning to the Dark Side after a lifetime of fighting for the Jedi. After declaring that the Jedi must come to an end in one of the teasers for the film, fans quickly realised that Skywalker had changed his ways in perhaps the biggest turnaround in cinematic history.

All of that however seems to now be in relation to a wider plot that won't see Skywalker turn to the Sith, but instead look at the world in a different way to how he's viewed it for the majority of his life. Once a loyal follower of the Jedi way of life, it would seem he's feeling discouraged by all that has gone on. Now, he's untrusting and unsure of the dedication his life has taken.

Speaking with Disney Insider, Hamill has been opening up about how Luke's outlook on life may have changed, but how, deep down, he'll never be somebody willing to take a dark turn.

He explained: "In 'Star Wars: The Force Awakens', Luke has lost confidence in his ability to make good choices. It haunts him to the core. But he hasn't gone to the dark side. This isn't an evil version of him. But it's still an incarnation of the character I never expected. It has pulled me out of my comfort zone. It's a real challenge."

Looking back, it's clear that the dark side has laid out its temptations for Luke already, with Emperor Palpatine encouraging him to harness his anger. Fortunately, he managed to bat away the advances of his enemies, but with unexpected twists to the 'Star Wars' tale promised in the near future, something big surely has to happen to meet the expectations of the huge fanbase.

What that means for Skywalker and the franchise's other leading characters remains to be seen, but you can bet the box office is going to see some big bucks from the series as we all rush into movie theatres to find out.

'Star Wars: The Last Jedi' is set for release in UK cinemas on December 15, 2017, with 'Episode IX' scheduled to drop two years later in December 2019.
