The wait for new Maroon 5 material is finally over. The band unleashed their brand new single, ‘Maps,’ and it’s the first taste we have from their upcoming album, V, out September 2 via Interscope Records. ‘Maps’ is Maroon 5 like you’ve never seen them before as the group enters uncharted territory with a song that’s bound to reach number one on the radio charts in no time. Produced by the same hit makers that brought you Overexposed’s ‘Payphone,’ ‘Maps’ has that same catchy flare to it featuring Adam Levine’s ever familiar falsetto. It’s a mid-tempo pop jam that never stops hitting, and it’s one of the best tracks we’ve heard from Maroon 5 yet.

While ‘Maps’ is certainly different, it has an addictive chorus like none other. “All the worse you took came back to me/So I’m following the map that leads to you/The map that leads to you/Ain’t nothing I can do,” Levine croons, and there ain’t nothing you can do about having it stuck in your head all summer. Though the lyrics may speak of heartbreak, Levine says it’s about a little more than just that. “It’s complicated. It’s also kind of not giving up on things too. People go through a lot of things and get stepped on and step on others and we all make mistakes. It’s kind of more about not giving up on something, even though maybe you should,” Levine told Ryan Seacrest about the track on Monday.

Though the lead single is out there now, it doesn’t mean the lid is blown off the record just yet. We still don’t have a track listing or the cover art, or even the names of some other songs, but something was confirmed for it that’s pretty huge. Following in the footsteps of Wiz Khalifa on Overexposed, another guest will be providing their voice to V: No Doubt’s Gwen Stefani. “I wanted it to be a surprise, but she is,” Levine said about it. At least it’s not completely ruined since it isn’t clear how involved she will be in her guest role, but we can only hope it turns out as awesome as it should be.

As for the record itself, Levine is increasing the hype pretty nicely. “Here’s the deal, I’m so excited about this album. Mostly because I think that what we always do with every record … it’s kind of everything we’ve ever done as a band musically. It’s kind of all of those things on this album. It’s what we used to sound like, it’s what we sound like now, it’s what we want to sound like tomorrow,” he continued. V features the return of keyboardist Jesse Carmichael, who took a hiatus from the band during Overexposed, and also has a production team with the likes of Max Martin, Ryan Tedder, and Shellback. V has all of the ingredients for something fantastic, and it’s only a matter of time until we see what’s really in store.
