Smaug just keeps on desolating. The chances of other films, that is.
The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug is likely to become the season’s not-so-surprising smash success. The second film from The Hobbit trilogy continued to dominate the box office over the past weekend, its third in a row. Despite a number of holiday releases, Bilbo Baggins & co. held on to the Number 1. spot with $29.9 earned over the three day period, bringing its total to $190 million earned domestically in the three weeks since its release (according to Box Office Mojo).
Bilbo Baggins keeps the lead, despite Frozen's success.
As predicted, Smaug is soaring through the holiday period and into the New Year. The only other movie to match its three-week run in 2013 has been Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity. Disney’s Frozen has also been doing well on the holiday box office front, following as a close second with $28.8 million over the weekend period. Anchorman 2 fell a spot to No. 3 with $20.2 million, while American Hustle took fourth place with $19.6 million.
Even so, Frozen is Disney's highest earning film in the US since The Lion King.
While these films have been doing predictably well, it hasn’t been a good weekend for new releases. Leonardo DiCapprio starrer The Wolf of Wall Street has been relegated to fifth place with a disappointing $18.5 million in its debut weekend, while Saving Mr. Banks debuted with $14 million. $13 million made The Secret Life of Walter Mitty seventh on its opening weekend, while Catching Fire continued its winning streak with $10.2 million on its sixth week. In 9th place, the Keanu Reaves starrer 47 Ronin barely made a ripple with $9.9 million – a disappointing debut for a flick made on a $175 million budget. Finally, Tyler Perry's A Madea Christmas rounded out the top 10 with $7.4 million in its third week.
