It’s safe to say that the first press shots and trailer for the upcoming new series of ‘Top Gear’, the first to be helmed by Matt LeBlanc without Chris Evans, have met with a divisive reception.

The BBC Two show released an image of LeBlanc with the programme’s new co-hosts, Rory Reid and Chris Harris, on Tuesday (February 14th) ahead of the return of ‘Top Gear’ in early March. In the background, The Stig can be seen, with helicopters and rockets overhead.

However, it’s the second line-up change in as many years for the under-fire show. Following the acrimonious departure of Jeremy Clarkson in March 2015, with his colleagues Richard Hammond and James May following him out of the door soon afterwards, the BBC announced Chris Evans as the new presenter.

Evans soon departed after the 2016 series struggled to retain viewers in addition to poor reviews, with many finding his presentational style ‘shouty’.

But it seems that the next new format, with Harris and Reid stepping up their duties having been reporters and correspondents on last year’s series, hasn’t done much to mollify despairing fans, with one even saying that ‘Top Gear’ had “died long ago” and the BBC should move on.

Another Twitter user complained: “Rory Reid is literally unwatchable: he just recycles Clarkson-esque comparisons. Harris mildly annoying. #TopGear just give it up.” Another wrote: “Still not even one woman. So totally sexist that I can't even!!!”

Departing last summer, Evans said that LeBlanc (with whom it was reported he had a handful of behind-the-scenes bust-ups during filming) was “the captain” that ‘Top Gear’ needed in the future.

“Stepping down from ‘Top Gear’. Gave it my best shot but sometimes that's not enough. The team are beyond brilliant, I wish them all the best. Full steam ahead then with Radio 2, CarFest, Children In Need, 500 Words and whatever else we can dream up in the future.”
