Matt Smith Bows Out Of 'Doctor Who' In Dramatic Christmas Special

There was a lot of promise surrounding the Christmas episode of Doctor Who and when it aired on BBC 1 on Christmas Day it very much lived up to the hype and expectation buzzing around the show and the exit of the Eleventh Doctor, Matt Smith. The exit of Smith also meant one other thing, the regeneration of the Doctor into his twelfth form: enter Peter Capaldi.

The Doctor had business to attend to before he could bow out

The Christmas special - called 'The Time of the Doctor,' in relation to the fiftieth anniversary episode 'The Day of the Doctor' - was full of action and packed in plenty of entertainment in the lead up to Smith's eventual bow out from the show that launched him to stardom. The episode featured Daleks, Time Lords, Cybermen, Weeping Angels, a town called Christmas and more and even Amy Pond (Karen Gillan), the Doctor's former assistant, made an appearance in the show to say farewell the Eleventh Doctor.

The Extended BBC America Trailer For The Doctor Who Christmas Special Is As Cheesy As It Is Fascinating

Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

It’s that time of year again – time to get overly emotional or just slightly snooty over the newly released US extended trailer for the Doctor Who Christmas special. This one, however, is super special, if you’ll pardon the wording, since it also marks the departure of the 11th Doctor and, correspondingly, Matt Smith.

The last time this happened to us (“us” referring here to whovians as an emotional support system, which was sorely needed at the time) was in the 2010 Christmas episode. Let’s just say bulk quantities of tissues were used during that episode. With current showrunner Steven Moffat’s propensity for killing off his characters (even though he mostly resurrects them afterwards) whovians the world over should probably gear up for a tear-jerker.

According to the trailer, this year’s episode will be a family affair, with the Doctor visiting his companion Clara at her parents’ Christmas dinner. We’ll also get to see some new friends in the face of the Silence, the Weeping Angels (always a favorite monster) and, natch, some Daleks, ready to wreak havoc.

Who Will Play 'Poldark' In The BBC's Reboot Of The 70s Period Drama?

Eddie Redmayne Matt Smith Aaron Johnson Jonas Armstrong Colin Morgan Rob James Collier

'Poldark' is set to return to our screens in a brand new reboot almost four decades on from the first episode premiere of the original series.

The BBC costume drama was first aired in 1975, based on the series of books by Winston Graham. It follows the trials and tribulations of Army Officer Ross Poldark's love life as he returns to Cornwall to find that the love of his life, Elizabeth, is set to marry his cousin. Embittered and unable to move on from his stolen love, he marries a simple servant girl named Demelza as the rest of his once idyllic life crashed around him. Filming for the new series is set to begin later this year in Cornwall, though producers are still searching for the right candidate to play the coveted lead role. So far, suggestions as to who might land the part include 'Les Miserables' actor Eddie Redmayne, Matt Smith of 'Doctor Who', 'Kick-Ass' star Aaron Johnson, Jonas Armstrong from 'Robin Hood', 'Merlin''s Colin Morgan, Rob James Collier from 'Downton Abbey' and 'Warm Bodies' actor Nicholas Holt.

BBC1 controller Danny Cohen announced the reboot, which will be adapted by Debbie Horsfield, saying: 'It has been a joy and privilege to commission programmes for BBC One. I hope audiences enjoy the range and creative ambitions of these new dramas for the channel.'

How Will Doctor Who Writers Explain Matt Smith AND David Tennant On Screen Together?

Matt Smith David Tennant Billie Piper John Hurt

Filming for the 50th anniversary edition of Doctor Who is underway and the Daily Mail have published photos from the set. For the first time, both Matt Smith and David Tennant will appear on screen together, whilst speculation mounts as to how the show’s producers will explain away the presence of two Time Lords on screen together.

Both Smith and Tennant being on screen isn’t the only surprise for the 3D special though. John Hurt has been confirmed as one of the cast members, as have Gavin and Stacey actress Joanna Page and Billie Piper, a former Doctor Who star herself. David Tennant left the show back in 2010, when he handed over the Time Lord reins to Matt Smith but he’s admitted that he’s enjoying being back on the set of the popular BBC sci-fi series and is also happy to be working with his former co-star Billie Piper again. “It is strange being back in the same suit, but it also feels very familiar and comfortable,” said Tennant. “There’s nothing quite like Doctor Who. It has a wonderful excitement about it. I always had happy times there. It’s lovely to be around Billie again, even though I see her all the time anyway.”

David Tennant Doctor Who Anniversary

Get your sonic screwdrivers and Converse ready and prepare to run, because the 50th anniversary of Doctor Who will be a big one, featuring none other than David Tennant and Billie Piper.

BBC themselves have announced that the tenth doctor and his most beloved companion Rose will be back in the 50th anniversary episode, due to air this November, but they will be under different direction from last time, since this time Steven Moffat is behind the wheel. Ten and Rose will cross paths with Matt Smith’s eleventh doctor in a plot, which Moffat is so far keeping under very tight wraps. In fact, all eleven of the Doctor’s incarnations are rumoured to make an appearance in the episode.

Matt Smith, who plays the current doctor, praised Moffat’s writing for the anniversary episode. Smith has said the show "manages to pay homage to everything - and look forward".

Going Back In Time! The 'Doctor Who' Characters We'd Love To Make 50th Anniversary Comebacks

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Christopher Eccleston Billie Piper Catherine Tate Elisabeth Sladen John Barrowman Tom Baker Sylvester McCoy

The upcoming 50th anniversary of legendary British sci-fi series 'Doctor Who' has sent a flurry of fervent excitement through fans everywhere who are now spending every waking hour wondering what producers could possibly have dreamt up for this milestone celebration. Rumours have been flying around everywhere suggesting jaw dropping twists and major reunions (some of which are frankly impossible) and it is true to say that everyone is hoping for it to be their favourite 'Doctor Who' story ever.

There are, at least, some definite confirmations about what we can expect for the upcoming anniversary show. On November 23rd 2013 (that's precisely 50 years on from the airing of the first ever episode 'An Unearthly Child') a special 3D show will be aired on BBC HD and in cinemas. It's a rather apt way of celebrating 50 years; by using our own technological advances on a show full of gadgetry. Lead writer Steven Moffat told the Guardian: 'Technology has finally caught up with 'Doctor Who' and your television is now bigger on the inside' - making a reference, of course, to the Doctor's TARDIS; a police box spaceship that is bigger on the inside than it is on the outside.

Is It Back On Again For Matt Smith And Daisy Lowe?

Matt Smith Daisy Lowe

It looks as though Doctor Who actor Matt Smith, 30 and his ex girlfriend Daisy Lowe, 23, may have rekindled their friendship.

The Sun have reported that the on again off again couple may well be on again, after they struggled to keep their hands off each other at this week’s Esquire & Tommy Hilfger London Collection party, where Lowe was DJing.

Apparently, Daisy’s PR people were keen to ensure that she and Matt weren’t photographed together and even “jumped into the shot to stop a pap snapping the cosy pair.” The couple made “a big deal” of arriving separately so that they wouldn’t be photographed together but were apparently “all over each other” once they got inside. Daisy was DJ-ing at the event at The Zetter Townhouse, which was also attended by Tinie Tempah, who arrived in a snazzy looking Mercedes, Matt Smith’s chum Benedict Cumberbatch and The Kills’ Jamie Hince. The recently married Rolling Stones guitarist Ronnie Wood was also there with his new wife Sally Humphreys.

Fight! Sherlock V Doctor Who At The National Television Awards

Benedict Cumberbatch Matt Smith Steven Moffat

Obviously, both Benedict Cumberbatch and Matt Smith will approach the duel with compassion; they are of course great friends, but it does beg the question: with Dr Who going up against Sherlock in the national film awards, which of those fictional characters would win in a real fight?

We're plumping Dr. Who. By the time Holmes has determined the amount of hairs on Who's right leg by the length of his ear, The Doctor will have figured out how to banish him to a distant planet. And before anyone can say tardis, he'll be off.

The pair are in the running for the best actor prize. Steven Moffat - writer and producer of both - said to The BBC: "Well this is very flattering, but also terrifying. I hope everyone votes with tremendous care and the result is an exact draw between both shows."

Err...what happened to Daisy Lowe at the Tommy Hilfiger and Esquire after-party held at The Zetter Townhouse in London on Monday (January 7, 2013)? Wearing a classic leather jacket, floral print top and biker boots, the model looked a little confused and appeared to be acting strangely. Perhaps she was just a little excited (or nervous) to run into her ex-boyfriend Matt Smith, who was also in attendance. Nevertheless, Daisy, 23, tried out her skills at entertaining the star-studded crowd on the decks before carrying on partying with her fellow celebrities.

The Doctor himself was looking pretty dapper in a long winter coat, paisley scarf, black trousers and heavy boots. His close friend Benedict Cumberbatch also attended the bash, as did Rolling Stones star Ronnie Wood and his new wife Sally Humphreys. The couple tied the knot two-weeks ago in a ceremony at London's Dorchester Hotel. Sally, 34, beamed with delight as she arrived on the arm of her 65-year-old husband wearing a cream dress and glittery heels. Elsewhere, the omnipresent Radio 1 DJ Nick Grimshaw decided on a night on the tiles despite his early morning wake-up call, and was pictured with Kate Moss' rocker husband Jamie Hince. Grimshaw opted for a well-tailored suit, though looked in need of a serious haircut.

TV Royalty Dr Who Graces New Royal Mail Stamp Set

Doctor Who Matt Smith David Tennant Steven Moffat Sylvester McCoy Tom Baker

To mark the 50th anniversary of Dr Who Royal Mail has revealed a stamp set with the faces of 11 Dr Whos plus four of the most evil and notorious villains.

Andrew Hammond speaking on behalf of the Royal Mail said to the BBC that the commemorative selection will "pay tribute to the brilliant actors that have played the Doctor over the years, as well as the adversaries that helped make the show so popular." They'll be released in 2013, marking the 50th year since it was first seen, in 1963. It ran with series upon series until 1989 when it was stopped. However, in 2005 it made a triumphant return and has enjoyed fantastic viewing figures ever since.

Matt Smith is the current doctor and he'll be one of the faces of the stamps, along with David Tenant, Tom Baker, Patrick Troughton, Sylvester McCoy, Colin Baker, and William Hartnell who was the first doctor.

New Poster For Doctor Who Christmas Special

Doctor Who Matt Smith Jenna-louise Coleman

In what’s fast becoming a Christmas tradition for families up and down the UK, the Doctor Who Christmas Special will once again be landing on BBC TV screens, and it seems like the broadcasting company are fully aware of its popular status, with first a new trailer and now poster making the production values of the forthcoming episodes look like something out of a Hollywood blockbuster.

The Daily Mail reports that the promotional poster shows the Time Lord, played again by Matt Smith, clinging on to a ladder, held on to in turn by his new assistant Clara, played by Jenna-louise Coleman. The pair look like they’re trying to climb the ladder in order to reach a sky-bound Tardis, whilst snowflakes fall around them to London below – Big Ben sticking out of the murk. This year the enemy that the Doctor must overcome is played by Richard E. Grant; as Dr. Simeon, he commands an army of vicious snowmen to do his bidding.

Normally cocksure and plucky as the Doctor, Smith’s character will have a somewhat different demeanor this time round, given that previous assistant Amy Pond was lost to him at the end of the last series. As executive producer Steven Moffat explained in a previous statement, "The Doctor at Christmas is one of my favorite things -- but this year it's different. He's lost Amy and Rory to the Weeping Angels, and he's not in a good place: in fact, he's Scrooge. He's withdrawn from the world and no longer cares what happens to it. So when all of humanity hangs in the balance, can anyone persuade a tired and heartbroken Doctor that it's time to return to the good fight. Enter Jenna-Louise Coleman..."

BBC Release Trailer For Dr Who Christmas Special

Doctor Who Matt Smith

The BBC have released a sneak peak of the upcoming Dr Who Christmas Special titled 'The Snowmen,' with the good Doctor, played by Matt Smith and his latest sidekick, played by Jenna Louise Coleman, introducing the trailer now available on the BBC's website.

The trailer doesn't reveal too much, however we do know that the episode will air on Christmas Day and will give us our first peak at Coleman's character Clara. For those Dr Who die hards out there then you wont need telling that Coleman has already appeared in the show, playing a seemingly different character in this season's premiere, 'Asylum of the Daleks' earlier this year. Given the nature of the pair's intro to the snippet, it looks as though we wont have to worry too much about them having a lack of chemistry, as they appear very much at home in each other company as they tease the viewer over the nature of the sneak peak.

The Christmas special has been written by lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, and will see the Doctor once again crossing paths with the part human, part reptile Silurian Madame Vastra (played Neve McIntosh) and her unimaginatively named companion Jenny (Catrin Stewart).

Very Good
The offshoring of U.S. jobs remains a hot topic in the news... and now it's a hot topic in the movies, too. (At least four projects called Outsourced have been produced in the last three years alone!)

Everyman Josh Hamilton carries this premise handily: His game of computer Solitaire is interrupted by his boss, who's telling him the customer service call center he manages is being shipped overseas, to India. If Todd (Hamilton) wants to keep his job, he'll fly over there and train the new folks, getting their time-per-call numbers down to something more profitable.
