Christopher Nolan has made an appearance at CinemaCon to talk about his hugely anticipated new sci-fi movie Interstellar. The film has been mostly kept under wraps, though we do know that real-life wormhole scientist Kip Thorne is credited as a producer and Matthew Mcconaughey and Michael Caine star.

True Detective spans 17 years, follows the relationship of two men working on a ritualistic murder case and features one of the most complex, haunting and intriguing characters in TV’s recent history: Rust Cohle, played masterfully by recent Oscar winner, Matthew Mcconaughey.

Jared Leto Wins Oscar For Transgender Role, Gets Criticized By Transgender Community

Jared Leto Matthew Mcconaughey

Jared Leto’s Oscar win may have seemed unlikely a few years ago, while the 30 Seconds to Mars frontman was taking a break from the big screen and concentrating on his music, but he was very much the favorite to pick up Best Suuporting Actor for his role as Rayon in Dallas Buyers Club on Oscars night – an award that has attracted criticism from certain transgender groups.

Why Matthew McConaughey Could Win Successive Best Actor Oscars

Matthew Mcconaughey Christopher Nolan

Nobody could deny Matthew Mcconaughey the Oscar for best actor at the 86th Academy Awards. His acceptance speech was typically McConaughey and the 44-year-old Texan really has established himself as one of America's finest actors with movie-stealing turns in Killer Joe, Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club - not to mention his probable Golden Globe and Emmy winning turn in HBO's crime-drama True Detective.

Interstellar

Now, a lot can happen between now and the Oscars in 2015, though McConaughey will be considered an early favorite to win best actor again - for Christopher Nolan's Interstellar. It's been known for years that the Academy doesn't particular reward sci-fi, but with Alfonso Cuaron's Gravity winning seven gongs on Sunday (March 2, 2014), it's not difficult to argue that trends are changing.

Matthew McConaughey's Best Actor Acceptance Speech: The Best Or Worst Of All Time?

Matthew Mcconaughey

Dependent on your personal philosophy and threshold for egomania Matthew Mcconaughey’s Oscar speech has been described as the best, and worst, acceptance speech ever. McConaughey took to the stage after finding out that he had won the Oscar for Best Actor in a Leading Role for his performance in Dallas Buyers Club. He thanked the usual suspects, ‘all 6,000 members’ of the Academy, his co-stars Jared Leto (who won the Oscar for Best Supporting Actor) and Jennifer Garner, his director Jean-Marc Vallee and his wife and children.

matthew mcconaughey oscars speech McConaughey also won the Screen Actors Guild award for Dallas Buyers Club

McConaughey then launched into an impressively structured monologue, explaining the three things that he needs to live his life: "One of them is something to look up to, another is something to look forward to and another is someone to chase." First on his list was his God, who he said "has graced my life with opportunities that I know are not of my hand or any other human hand" - apart from the screenwriter, casting director, director and any others involved in the production of the movie, and indeed any other movie McConaughey has starred in, including himself (surprisingly).

As we predicted, Matthew Mcconaughey's remarkable career turnaround is complete after the actor won the Oscar for Best Actor at the 86th Academy Awards for his stunning turn in Dallas Buyers Club. McConaughey played Ron Woodruff, a HIV patient who smuggled unapproved drugs into Texas when he found them effective at improving his symptoms, and distributed them to fellow sufferers.

McConaughey has long been the favorite to win the award and is now considered one of the greatest American actors after he ditched lucrative romantic-comedy roles for serious dramatic parts. Dallas Buyers Club? Matthew McConaughey's Finest Performance Lies On TV

Matthew Mcconaughey

Ok, so we realise Matthew McConuaghey could only have received Oscar nominations for Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club, but the McConnaissance did not reach its zenith when the Texan 44-year-old lost 45 pounds to inhabit the world of Ron Woodruff. Though McConaughey is arguably America's greatest actor at the moment, his finest performance has been saved for television: on HBOs True Detective.

The actor's turn as the existential, philosophizing detective Rust Cohle in Nic Pizzolato's acclaimed crime-drama is consistently impressing and testing audiences in equal measure and with just two episodes left to run, fans are speculating as to whether the series can retain its quality without the Oscar nominee.

Looking at the series of cheesy rom-coms that McConaughey has padded out his career with, it's fairly easy to see why director Jean-Marc Vallee was at first sceptical about casting the classically handsome, all-American beefcake actor. "I wasn't sure about Matthew at first," said Vallee to THR. "Mr. The Most Handsome Man With Muscles? Then I met him and found a man who really wanted to change perceptions and have new challenges in his career."

Oscars 2014: Why Jared Leto Will Win A Supporting Actor Category Full Of Spring Chickens

Nowadays, Leto spends most of his time fronting his indie-rock venture, 30 Seconds to Mars, but his acting work doesn’t come second: he was widely considered to be deserved of a nomination for Darren Aronofsky’s 2000 Requiem for a Dream and has recently been picking up awards for his latest performance alongside Matthew Mcconaughey.

Ignore The Bookies, It Could Be Leonardo DiCaprio's Year At The Oscars

Leonardo Dicaprio Matthew Mcconaughey Christian Bale Academy Of Motion Pictures And Sciences Bruce Dern Chiwetel Ejiofor

Let's ignore the bookmakers' predictions for this Sunday's Oscars (March 2, 2014). The people who devise these odds have not seen the movies and base their prices on critics' reviews and public opinion of movies, actors and actresses. The McConnaissance - see Mud, Dallas Buyers Club, Wolf of Wall Street and True Detective - has left bookmakers quaking in their boots and reducing Matthew Mcconaughey's odds of winning best actor to 1/9. It's true that his portrayal of Ron Woodruff is probably the best of his career, though the Texan is way off being considered a nailed certainty on to win the award.

Leonardo DiCaprio Wolf of Wall StreetWill Jonah Hilll [L] Be Congratulating Leonardo Dicaprio [R] At The Oscars?

Consider the alternatives: we've got Chiwetel Ejiofor, the star of the finest movie of the year, Steve McQueen's 12 Years a Slave. History suggests that when a movie gains a momentum at the Oscars, it can rattle through the categories taking awards that it probably had no right to win. Nobody would complain should Ejiofor take best actor on Sunday anyway, though McConaughey and Leonardo DiCaprio could find themselves with little chance if the Academy has voted for 12 Years in the same way it took to The King's Speech and The Artist.

Nic Pizzolatto put the sincerity and quality of True Detective’s story over multiple seasons of the show, asserting that a strict 8-episode format would be condusive to a strong third act. And judging by the critical claim he’s received – his creation is being talked about in the same breath as The Wire – one is inclined to trust the man who risked everything to write the new HBO anthology series.

“One of the reasons I wanted to do an anthology format is I like stories with endings. I like a good third act. And continuing serial dramas, they tend to have really good beginnings and really long middles and then sort of have to hustle to develop an ending. And I like the idea of telling a self-contained story,” explained Pizzolatto.

Dallas Buyers Club Review

Excellent

In telling this remarkable true story, director Jean-Marc Vallee (The Young Victoria) and his gifted cast keep the characters and events so grounded that we can't help but get caught up in their story. The film never asks for our sympathy, but it earns it over and over again as it explores a disgraceful period in American history when businesses and the government essentially condemned millions to death by withholding proper treatment for HIV and Aids.

It begins in 1985, when homophobic womaniser Ron Woodroof (McConaughey) is told that he has just a month to live. Refusing to believe that he has the same disease that has just killed Rock Hudson, he ignores his doctors (Garner and O'Hare) to find his own supply of AZT, which makes him even more ill. So he heads to Mexico to find a range of treatment the US government has refused to approve, and he imports them himself, creating a members' club to subvert the law. This requires that he set his deep-seated prejudice aside so he can work with the transgendered Rayon (Leto). But a government lawyer (O'Neill) is determined to shut him down.

Yes, it's deeply infuriating to watch the American system try so hard to stop Woodruff from saving lives. Government officials continually outlaw his effective treatments so they can pawn off the toxic, over-priced AZT instead. So Woodruff travels the world in search of new medicine, and his business of course takes off. Vallee cleverly cuts through the 1980s period details to reveal Woodruff's earthy tenacity and an overpowering sense of humanity.

The Wolf Of Wall Street Review

Extraordinary

At age 71, Martin Scorsese proves with this riotous romp that he's one of the most energetic, audacious filmmakers working in America at the moment. And with his long-time 74-year-old editor Thelma Schoonmaker, he has created one of the most entertaining cautionary tales in recent memory. Not only does it highlight an unruly period in banking history, but it has a lot to say about where we are now.

This is the true story of Jordan Belfort (DiCaprio), who was 21 when he got his first job on Wall Street in the rough-and-tumble 1980s. Thanks to his illicit deals, he was a multi-millionaire within five years, tutored by a jaded veteran (McConaughey) and assisted by an enthusiastic novice (Hill). Along the way, he also swaps for a much more glamorous wife (Robbie), whose British aunt (Lumley) becomes part of his scam to stash his cash with a shady Swiss banker (Dujardin). But with an FBI agent (Chandler) on his trail, Jordan suspects that the high life can't go on forever.

At just under three hours long, the film sometimes feels like it is wallowing in the excessive sex and drugs along with these Wall Street criminals. But there's a jagged undercurrent to everything: all of this hedonism may look like fun, but someone is paying the price. The film is an often thrilling series of set-pieces that roll out in waves of comedy, tragedy and farce as these people play on the edge of an abyss. And it's great to see scenes play out in real time, with deep conversations, riotous comedy riffs and characters who are full of conflicting layers.

The Wolf Of Wall Street - Clips

It's a wild ride of drinking, drugs, debauchery and deception when the ambitious Jordan Belfort decides that he wants to be one of the rich kids. Starting out his stockbroker business in a small office with a handful of employees, his aims are simple; target only the richest people in the country. It isn't long before Belfort and his team find themselves with more money than they know what to do with and begin to live their lives manically high off the success. However, Belfort hasn't exactly been making what you'd call an honest living and pretty soon the secrets of his fraudulent profits and money laundering draws attention from the authorities. And not only that, his disregard for others' sufferings means he's got a lot more to lose than his beloved business.

'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a gritty white-collar crime drama based on the true story of Jordan Belfort, a former stockbroker who served 22 months in prison for his fraudulent activity in 1998 and subsequently wrote two memoirs entitled 'The Wolf of Wall Street' and 'Catching the Wolf of Wall Street'. The new movie has been directed by the Oscar winning Martin Scorsese ('Shutter Island', 'Goodfellas', 'The Departed') and written by multi-Primetime Emmy winning writer Terence Winter ('The Sopranos', 'Boardwalk Empire', 'Brooklyn Rules').

First Glimpse At 'Interstellar' Gives Very Little Away - Why Are We So Excited Then!?

Christopher Nolan Matthew Mcconaughey Anne Hathaway Michael Caine Jessica Chastain Casey Affleck

Earlier this week we were treated to the first teaser trailer for Christopher Nolan's sci-fi epic Interstellar. The trailer really did put the 'teaser' back in to teaser trailer, as it consisted only of archive footage of various historical events, with Matthew Mcconaughey's rich Texan drawl narrating something inspirational over the top of the images. It gave absolutely nothing away in regards to what we can expect to see in the film, but frankly we don't even care.

Christopher Nolan
Not to jump to conclusions, but Nolan might have done it again

Nolan has been working in relative secrecy on the project along with his brother, Jonathan Nolan, with the basis of the film apparently being inspired by a story by physicist Kip S. Thorne. We already know this, as well as the fact that McConaughey will be starring in the film alongside Anne Hathaway, Jessica Chastain, Casey Affleck, Michael Caine and others, and after seeing the first glimpse of the film this is still all we know in regards to what the Nolan Bros. have in store for us. Their secrecy might make some angry, but frankly the secrecy is just making us more and more excited for the complex film.

Forget The Screen Actors Guild Nominees, WHO GOT SNUBBED?!

Screen Actors Guild Matthew Mcconaughey Bruce Dern Tom Hanks Forest Whitaker

This morning we were treated to the Screen Actors Guild (SAG) nominations. It's one of the biggest award ceremonies on the movie calendar and, well, it's kind of a big deal. Forget the Globes - this is the ceremony that best predicts what's going to happen at the Oscars, with Shakespeare in Love, Chicago, Crash, Return of the King, Slumdog Millionaire, No Country For Old Men, Slumdog Millionaire, The King's Speech and Argo all winning the best ensemble cast award before going on to win best picture at the Academy Awards.

Obviously, we're not really interested in who got nominated today - we want to know who got snubbed, right? Well, this article probably isn't going to be too lengthy given that most of the nominations announcement was fairly predictable.

Matthew McConaughey Completes U-Turn As 'Dallas Buyers Club' Stuns The Critics

Matthew Mcconaughey Jared Leto

It’s official, Matthew Mcconaughey’s days as an up-and-coming, comedy actor are over. Mud and Dallas Buyer’s Club have seen to that, with what looks like a sterling performance in True Detectives coming in January to boot. But it’s the 44-year-old’s performance as Ron Woodruff that has the critic’s heads in a spin.

Woodruff was a cowboy unfamiliar with the quieter side of life. Always living as he pleased, his stormy existence came into serious doubt when he was given 30 days to live after being diagnosed with the AIDs virus - a death sentence in the 80s, when the film is set.

To play the role of Ron Woodruff, McConaughey was asked to drop 135 pounds and photos taken at the time show a much more emaciated form than the wholesome Texan cowboy fans are used to seeing.

Matthew McConaughey Wins Over His Critics With Remarkable 'Dallas Buyers Club' Performance

Matthew Mcconaughey Jared Leto Jennifer Garner

Matthew Mcconaughey has been the butt of many a joke over the course of his career, with his acting ability often brought into question by critics and jokers alike thanks to his largely uninspired choice of roles. His latest film, however, is a major departure from his usual rom-com venture and has even had people crying out for him to be awarded an Oscar, or at least get a nomination for his work in Dallas Buyers Club.

Matthew McConaughey
McConaughey is exceptional in the film

McConaughey stars as Ron Woodroof in the true story of the former Dallas Cowboys star who is stricken with the still-largely unknown and misunderstood HIV virus in 1986. Abandoned by his friends and acquaintances and given just 30 days to live by his largely unhelpful team of doctors, Woodroof is forced to take matters into his own hands and ships in various 'cures' and treatments from across the globe. Soon he begins to build up a surplus of supplies and begins distributing them among the largely ignored HIV-suffering population, meeting like-minded people on his trip, including Jennifer Garner and Jared Leto, both of whom have also been widely praised for their performances.

The Movies Beckon This Weekend: 'Last Vegas', 'Enders Game,' 'Dallas Buyers Club' [Trailers]

Robert De Niro Matthew Mcconaughey Jared Leto Morgan Freeman

We've been spoiled by great films all year and this first week of November is no different with a cornucopia of cinematic excitement headed towards US shores.

'Last Vegas' - Out 1st Nov.

Arguably the most entertaining release of the week will be Jon Turteltaub's new comedy, Last Vegas. The movie has assembled a sterling cast of older actors, including Robert De Niro, Michael Douglas, Morgan Freeman, and Kevin Kline. To call the movie the grandpa's version of The Hangover would not be giving the film credit for its compelling premise which makes for a hugely watchable film with a driving force of solid acting talent.

Wolf Of Wall Street Trailer

Jordan Belfort started out his stockbroker business in a tiny office with a small group of people and had the intention of targeting only the richest people in America as their clientele. With such a small percentage of individuals lined up as hopeful patrons, their dreams of immense fortune and a life of luxury seemed embarrassingly unlikely. However, pretty soon the company starts to ooze more money than they can handle and it's parties, alcohol and women all round. Unfortunately, it soon becomes clear to everyone that what Belfort was doing to earn his fortune is not entirely legal and he risks his freedom and his wealthy lifestyle when the FBI get involved.

'The Wolf of Wall Street' is a white-collar crime drama based on the two memoirs by the real Belfort, who was jailed in 1998 for a string of fraudulent offences including money laundering. The autobiographies have since been translated into 18 different languages and now the Oscar winning Martin Scorsese ('Shutter Island', 'Goodfellas', 'The Departed') directs the screen adaptation which has been written by multi-Primetime Emmy winning writer Terence Winter ('The Sopranos', 'Boardwalk Empire', 'Brooklyn Rules'). The movie is set to be release on January 17th 2014.

Jake Gyllenhaal Swaps Biceps For Bones As He Slims Down For 'Nightcrawler'

Jake Gyllenhaal Matthew Mcconaughey Anne Hathaway

Jake Gyllenhaal becomes the latest actor to take his new role to the extreme by losing a significant twenty pounds for crime drama 'Nightcrawler'.

The 'Brokeback Mountain' star looked alarmingly different as he appeared on the red carpet at the 17th Annual Hollywood Film Awards on Monday (October 21st 2013), his usual padded cheeks now sunken and definitely looking a far cry from the bulky frame he adopted for 2010 adventure flick 'Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time'. In his new film 'Nightcrawler', due for release in 2014, he plays Lou; a freelance crime journalist who finds himself amidst the treacherous world of corruption hidden by the glitzy front of LA.

Something To Fill The Imminent 'Breaking Bad' Void: HBO's 'True Detective'

Matthew Mcconaughey Woody Harrelson HBO

There are only three episodes of Breaking Bad left. Everything needs to be sorted out in three episodes. It seems a lot, but we’re pretty sure that once those credits roll on the season finale, we won’t be left disappointed by the ending. That fact that it’s ended, though, may well leave some people in a state of withdrawal.

Has 'Dallas Buyers Club' Entered The Oscars Race? [Trailer + Pictures]

Matthew Mcconaughey Jared Leto Jennifer Garner

The 2014 Oscars will be dominated by films based on a true stories, and a worthy addition to that lengthy list is Dallas Buyers Club, the true-life tale of Ron Woodroof, a Texas electrician who went to war with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies after being diagnosed as HIV-positive in 1986.

Matthew McConaughey Sparks Oscars Buzz With 'The Dallas Buyers Club' Trailer

Matthew Mcconaughey Jared Leto

Matthew Mcconaughey has a very real chance of scoring his first ever Oscar nomination for The Dallas Buyers Club. Before this week, we'd only been treated to stills from the drama - showing the Hollywood actor playing a dangerously thin AIDS patient - though now we have the trailer, and the 38-year-old's performance comes across very, very well.

Early reaction suggest The Dallas Buyers Club could be McConaughey's strongest role yet and the first footage appears to corroborate with that line of thought. The thing is: if McConaughey is going to score a lead actor nomination, then Jared Leto may get the nod for supporting actor by default. He plays fellow AIDS patient Rayon, who weighed just 116 pounds during filming, evoking memories of Christian Bale's chilling appearance in The Machinist.

Based on a true story, The Dallas Buyers Club sees McConaughey play Texas electrician Ron Woodroof, a man who found himself in a life or death battle with the medical establishment and pharmaceutical companies.

Magic Mike To Return Better And In Less Clothing Than Ever In Broadway Adaptation

Channing Tatum Matthew Mcconaughey

We don’t tend to think of Magic Mike as high entertainment (actually, we rarely think of it at all,) but all that might be about to change with Channing Tatum’s announcement that the film will be adapted into a Broadway musical. In any case, hot male strippers singing and dancing live for a couple of hours? We would have absolutely no problem with the idea. Deadline was first to announce the news, also introducing the writing team - Next to Normal's Tom Kitt and Brian Yorkey will write the songs and Glee writer Roberto Aguirre-Sacasa will pen the script.

Channing Tatum, Jimmy Kimmel Live
The new dad might stay behind the scnes for this one.

This project has been in the works for over a year now, with Channing Tatum hinting at a musical adaptation. And of course, the questions of whether he would actually appear onstage – because what’s Magic Mike without Channing Tatum – have been rampant. Tatum does have a producer’s credit on the show, but it doesn’t look likely that he himself will appear onstage.

Where Does 'The Lone Ranger' Rank In List Of Biggest Movie Flops?

Johnny Depp Gore Verbinski Jerry Bruckheimer Jessica Biel Jamie Foxx Joe Morton Rob Cohen Christopher Walken Jeff Bridges John Goodman Matthew Mcconaughey Geena Davis Matthew Modine Frank Langella Disney

Ok, so by now everyone's well aware that Jerry Buckheimer and Gore Verbinski's The Lone Ranger is a monumental flop - a serious disaster that could cost Disney $150 million. The Johnny Depp-Armie Hammer starring western took just $48.9 million over the usually lucrative five-day Independence Day weekend - leaving it miles from its $175 million marketing budget, not to mention its $250 million production costs.

The Lone Ranger
Johnny Depp starred as Tonto and Armie Hammer played The Lone Ranger

According to the Hollywood Reporter, Disney is praying for a return of $150 million abroad, taking its worldwide total to $275 million and $150 million short of its $425 million total budget. "It's very disappointing," said Disney executive vice-president of worldwide distribution Dave Hollis. "Everything was perfect on paper, so today was incredibly frustrating." The problem is, nothing could be described as perfect. If Hollis is referring to Johnny Depp than it's lazy marketing. If he's referring to Verbinski in the directorial seat, or the bloated budget, than it's just stupid talk. The Lone Ranger has received some of the worst reviews of the year - it's a terrible movie - and unfortunately, nobody wants to watch big-budget westerns. Did Cowboys and Aliens teach them nothing?

Wow, this one looks pretty damn good doesn't it? The Wolf of Wall Street trailer, starring Leonardo Dicaprio as stockbroker Jordan Belfort, exploded onto the internet on Sunday (June 16, 2013) with tons of verve and energy. Directed by Martin Scorsese and based on Belfort's memoirs, the movie boasts a pretty stellar cast headed by DiCaprio and held firmly together by a particularly strong and funny looking performance from the excellent Matthew Mcconaughey

Jordan Belfort is a successful stockbroker, multi-millionaire and motivational speaker from New York who had enough money to throw anywhere he wanted. He was arrested and jailed in 1998 for a string of fraudulent activities surrounding stock market manipulation including money laundering and mob infiltration. He served 22 months in prison after being given a sentence of 4 years, famously refusing to cooperate during the case which exposed massive corruption on Wall Street. His crime was fuelled by his loved of alcohol, parties, women and, generally, the finer things in life including his luxury yacht which was originally built for Coco Chanel. He wrote two memoirs which were published in around 40 countries and have since been translated into 18 different languages.

Mud Review

Very Good

Writer-director Nichols continues to get inside the heads of his characters with this involving but overlong dramatic thriller. Like his previous film Take Shelter, this is another fable-like movie, this time harking back to Huck Finn with a boys' adventure story set on the waterways of rural Arkansas. It's impeccably shot and edited, with terrific performances even from side characters. But at over two hours, the long running-time tries our patience.

Our hero is Ellis (Sheridan), a shy but steely 14-year-old who dreams of one day escaping his backwoods community. For entertainment, he explores the rivers with his pal Neckbone (Lofland), and when they hear rumours of a boat stranded in a tree, they have to investigate. Sure enough, there it is, then inside it they discover the fugitive Mud (McConaughey). Even though he's wanted for murder, they decide to help free the boat so he can escape with his battered girlfriend Juniper (Witherspoon), who's hiding in a local motel. But Ellis and Neckbone need some help with this elaborate plan, so they turn to the scary old man (Shepard) who lives across the river.

Cinematographer Adam Stone beautifully captures both the evocative settings and the expressive faces of the actors, who all bring an introspective touch to their characters. Sheridan and Lofland are excellent in the lead roles, which are pretty demanding as these two teens have to grow up quickly. And McConaughey and Witherspoon dive fully into their much flashier roles, constantly surprising us with sparky details that take these people in unexpected directions. There's also a telling smaller role for Nichols' regular Shannon as Neckbone's haunted, sidelined guardian.
