Matthew Mcconaughey may well win the Oscar on Sunday evening, but television awards are ahead for 'True Detective'.
Ok, so we realise Matthew McConuaghey could only have received Oscar nominations for Mud, The Wolf of Wall Street and Dallas Buyers Club, but the McConnaissance did not reach its zenith when the Texan 44-year-old lost 45 pounds to inhabit the world of Ron Woodruff. Though McConaughey is arguably America's greatest actor at the moment, his finest performance has been saved for television: on HBOs True Detective.
Matthew Mcconaughey [R] in 'True Detective'
The actor's turn as the existential, philosophizing detective Rust Cohle in Nic Pizzolato's acclaimed crime-drama is consistently impressing and testing audiences in equal measure and with just two episodes left to run, fans are speculating as to whether the series can retain its quality without the Oscar nominee.
In a new piece, the Hollywood Reporter spoke with an anonymous Oscar vote about his/her picks with just days to go before the ceremony. Musing on the category for Best Actor, the voter explained that Christian Bale would get the nod for American Hustle, but their thoughts on McConaughey were interesting.
"Ejiofor [Chiwetel, 12 Years a Slave] was good. DiCaprio has been better; this is a popcorn performance. McConaughey was very good; he's really doing some great stuff now, and I would give it to him for True Detective. Dern is a great guy and a friend and is excellent in the movie, and if I were not as taken by Bale's performance as I am, I would have voted for him. But Bale had a much juicier role - Dern's role is very contained, whereas Bale is all over the place - so I had to go with him. It's the role of a lifetime."
Matthew McConaughey Delivers Arguably A Career Best Performance in 'True Detective'
Ok, so we realise that an actor cannot be Oscar nominated for a television role - we get that - but it's worth remembering that McConuaghey is currently churning out career best stuff on True Detective. And anyway, who cares about the Academy Awards? Role on the Emmys.
